I think everyone has noticed that when your watching a horror movie, and you jump because of something thats just happened on screen, its not actually because of what has happened on screen. Its because of the musical score. The music will be a fast drumming/ringing over a long drowning noise, then a crescendo at the point when something is going to happen, i.e. the serial killer grabs the girl from behind and cuts her throat.
I'm glad you posted this thread, as I am aspiring to be a script writer to horror movies, as well as a Director.
So obviously I am going to need to know what is scary, at the moment, I am kind of overwhelmed with the amount of horror movies there are.
And how many of them are creative, original, and generally good movies. Take "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" that was such a good film because of the controversy it caused. The character, although based on a real serial killer arrested 20 years before the making of the movie, was unlike any character seen in horror, up until that date the only characters were Vampires, Frankenstein, and Zombies.
