Gruesome Wood Chipper Death
Man Sucked Into Wood Chipper
A San Jose man was killed when he was sucked into a wood chipper during a landscaping job, police said.
Officer Gina Tepoorten said Miguel Marquez, 19, was working just outside of Novellus Systems around 11 a.m. when some debris got caught in the wood chipper's chute.
Attempting to clear the chute by kicking the wood through, both his feet and legs were pulled into the shredder, Tepoorten said.
Two co-workers were clearing branches from a tree at the time and didn't witness the accident, but pulled Marquez from the wood chipper.
His right leg had been completely severed, according to Tepoorten.
Marquez was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was scheduled for today.
The California Occupational and Safety Health Administration will initiate a full investigation, Tepoorten said.
