kubrick and King had major differences over this film which prompted King to do his usual made for TV shtick years later.
Kubrick does not believe in the supernatural so he wanted to portray Jack as a guy who's loss of mind created everything .. with just a slight nod of telepathy thrown in so the boy could communicate with the Scatman character at the end.
The book had the house being a 'sponge for evil' where it was completely supernatural.
I havent seen the remake so i cant judge, but I like Kubricks movie for the sets and cinematography which grabbed me as soon as the credits started to roll (remember the ariel shot that was following the car and then fell away ? i felt my gut fall with it when it first came out in the theatre - not sure if it had that effect on the small screen)
