Hardcore is a subgenre of Punk.
The only difference between the Hardcore of Hatebreed and the hardcore of the DC scene in the early 80's is that it is advanced.
I would never look at hardcore as a subgenre of metal, unless it's stuff like Avenged Sevenfold, which is like metal/hardcore.
At The Gates, as mentioned above are really good, and Suicide nation would definately be my favourite song.
For me it's too damn hard to name 5, here are ones of notable value to me.
Black Metal
VENOM- BLACK METAL (the band/album that started it all)
DARKTHRONE- A BLAZE IN THE NORTHERN SKY
DARKTHRONE- UNHOLY BlACK METAL
BURZUM (albums)- DET SOM ENGANG VAR / HIVS LYSET TAR OSS / FILOSOFEM
MAYHEM- PURE FUCKING ARMAGEDDON
Death Metal
DEATH (early stuff)
thats pretty much it, I don't listen to a lot of Death Metal.
Thrash Metal
SLAYER- SEASONS IN THE ABYSS
SLAYER- ANGEL OF DEATH
SLAYER- RAINING BLOOD & REIGN IN BLOOD
PANTERA- COWBOYS FROM HELL
PANTERA (album)- VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER
Classical Metal
JUDAS PRIEST- PAINKILLER
IRON MAIDEN (album)- KILLERS (pre Bruce)
you know, just, most early Maiden albums were good.
METALLICA- I don't like them, but they were influencial.
And thats it, I am sure someone could expand.
