Cannibal Holocaust. I found it pretty disturbing

To own or just to watch? They are both films that you should watch at least once.
Cannibal Holocaust is deeply disturbing and, while I own it, it is not the type of movie I will probably watch again. It has excellent deeper meanings including a criticism of the "civilization" of the modern world (from a 1980ish perspective, of course). The film can be difficult to watch though. There is a great deal of nudity and sex including a couple of brutal rapes. Several animals are brutally butchered on screen. The animal killings in the film are real which turns off some people. These animal killings are by no means the only examples of violence in the film. The film also includes brutal mutilation of multiple characters in the film. Obviously I will not go into any further detail as I do not wish to spoil the film if you decide to watch it. Motel Hell is a fun film. It is literally the opposite of Cannibal Holocaust. Sure, it is a similar idea, but it lacks the grit and realism of Cannibal Holocaust. The basic idea of the film is that a couple runs a motel and food stand. Essentially, they intentionally strand people and kill them, so they can harvest them for their stand. The acting in the film is by no means brilliant, but I really liked the characters. The "killers" are downright hilarious, in my opinion. For example, one of the characters Vincent says near the end of the film "There's too many people in the world and not enough food. Now this takes care of both problems at the same time." As you can tell, the film is campy and entirely unserious. Do not get the wrong impression, this is not to knock the film. I just want to be clear what you are getting into. Personally, I think it is a lot of fun. Also, the film definitely had influence on a number of later films including House of 1000 Corpses and Saw, which you will be able to see upon watching the film. Motel Hell is definitely the quintessential "guilty pleasure", which is alot of fun. Which one would I recommend? I am sure many others may recommend Cannibal Holocaust, but, of the two, I would actually say Motel Hell would be the one to watch. Even noted film critic Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars. It really depends on what you are looking for though. If you want a deep, difficult film that will cause you to question the good of humanity, then Cannibal Holocaust just may be the film for you. If you are looking for a good time and want to watch a fun film, then Motel Hell may be the film for you. I hope this was helpful and you "enjoy" whichever film you choose. |
