What's REALLY scary...

What's up.
Now I'm new to this forum and I did care to do some research but I haven't found a thread with my exact question so redirect me if you feel the need. :p

Lately I've been watching all kind of horror movies because what the hell I love them however, as for all of you, I try to cherry pick because I don't want to waste hundreds of minutes on boring productions.
I've been on all kinds of websites trying to find the "scariest movies of all time." I was really disappointed!
Looking around the forum I figured out that the definition of "scary" changes from people to people.
Therefor, I'm just gonna list what I think IS scary, what I think IS NOT, and if your taste matches mine, tell me what are the movies you were the MOST scared of. If your taste doesn't match mine, you may discuss. ;)

Here's what IS scary:
Gloomy atmosphere
Jump scares
Ghosts/poltergeists
Not getting used to seeing the bad guys/monsters (so they stay scary)
Movies that are scary (in no particular order)
Nosferatu
White Noise
Paranormal Activity (very much!)
The Grudge
The Ring
Psycho (I've only seen the remake yet)
Amityville Horror
Insidious (VERY scary up until it becomes an action movie in the last 10 minutes and I got bored)
It
1408

Here's what IS NOT scary:
Blood/gore
Zombies
Action
Seeing the monsters so much that we get used to them (you know what I mean)
Movies that were disappointingly NOT SCARY (in no particular order either)
The Exorcist (seriously? scars and vomit?)
The Shining (excellent movie, but just one or two scary scenes)
Jaws (I loved it... as a family movie!)
The Silence of the Lambs (drama/thriller... suspense at best, but not scary)
Dawn of the Dead
28 Days/Months Later
Alien
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Now, just to be clear, if the movie isn't scary (to me), it doesn't mean it is bad. I don't want to offend anybody: The Silence of the Lambs is probably my favorite movie of all time, but I REALLY don't think it deserves to be in a "scary" movie list. Same with Jaws and Alien!
In fact, most of the movies I find scary are poor in all other aspects... and the movies I find not scary are usually pretty good productions.

What do you think? Do I have terrible taste? Am I scared by the wrong things? If you agree with me, tell me some of the movies that scared you the most. Pleaaase!!

Good night!

Dead Silence. Great friggin movie.

But nice post. I've always been looking for scary movies, ones that'll actually make me jump, but i rarely find any. And some of the films people put down as scary make me think they are 5 year old. I liked The Shining, but scary? No.

Paranormal Activity was scary at times, but the problem with those films are the long waits in between scares.

I can only think of one time in a film where i've legitimately jumped out my skin, and that was the ending scene in FT13. Now if such films exist where there is more moments like that within it, then i'd like to watch them instantly!

Hah! You understand what I meant! I saw some of the movies you proposed and these are exactly in the style I like : Dead Silence, The Orphanage, Ju-on. I'll watch the others!

There's a lot of Ju-ons out there. Are you sure you've seen "Ju-on: Old lady in white", directed by Ryüta Miyake? Not Takashi Shimizu.

Don't, I say DON'T watch the trailer. It gives too much away.

You're right, I saw Shimizu's Ju-on, I guess now I have to watch Old Lady in white!

Scary and not scary

After reading this post and the replies to it it got me thinking about movies and what is and isn't scary and in my thoughts they led me to think of two movies that are a good example of scary and not scary. First the scary movie. The movie for this catorgory is called are you scared this movie was great now I personally like gore with my scare and this movie did just that! Made the year of 2006 this movie has some likeness to saw but with a great twist at the end I personally give this a 7 on the scare scale. Now for the unscary satan's little helper this movie was crap there was some gore but no real scare parts no jumpers no not knowing what the monster was this movie gets a big fat zero in my book don't waste your time with it.

Wow. I swear you're kidding. These are the very movies I would say are really scary.
Funny how what's scary to one is not scary to another.

The Descent
The Omen
The Ring
The Birds
Tale Of Two Sisters
The Grudge/Ju-on (don't judge me, but this movie scares the crap outta me)

I can't think of anymore cause I don't get scared by movies often
