An All Time Low

I hate to be one of those doomsayers who complains about the current crop of movies, but good grief, what a year this has been! I normally go to the movies at least once a month, but as the end of the year approaches, I realize I haven't been to the local multiplex once this year. I managed to go to the local art house cinema (about 55 miles away) three times this year to see the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy (which is FANTASTIC!!) but that's about it.

Has this year truly been awful for films, or am I becoming an old person complaining about things not being the way they used to be?

The Social Network, Inception, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, Kick-Ass, Hereafter Just to name a few, but I kind of have to agree with you.

I'll certainly be watching all those films once they make it to cable, but at the time I couldn't seem to work up enough enthusiam to go out and see them.

It also doesn't help that 'At The Movies' got cancelled. It isn't so much that I relied on the critics' opinions on whether to see a film or not (I disagree with them more often than agree; particularly on the subject of horror films), but seeing clips from the film combined with their reactions to the scene gave me a really good idea about whether I would give the film a whirl. I guess once the end of the year arrives and people like Roger Ebert start to make their 10 best lists, I'll get some idea of what I might have initially dismissed as actually worth watching.

The Social Network was amazing. For a movie about the creator/creation of facebook I was happily impressed.

It certainly looked good. It's probably the top contender for the Best Picture Oscar at the moment.

Mega Piranha was made this year - so obviously one of the best years ever...

Tough year for movies, I agree... It's mostly on the side of "not bad" - A big ol' 'meh'

Movies that I loved and I say are highly recommended:
  • Defendor
  • The Runaways
  • Kick-Ass
  • Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
  • Get Him to the Greek
  • Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Movies that were fun or "pretty good" ("not bad")
  • Piranha 3D
  • Youth in Revolt
  • Daybreakers
  • Frozen
  • Splice
  • The Other Guys
Movies that I haven't seen yet but have heard good stuff about
  • Cyrus
  • Toy Story 3
  • Inception
  • The Town
  • Social Network
  • Red
  • Monsters
  • The Tempest

I'm not much on films other than horror. I'll watch something on cable with the wife once in a while that's non horror, but I can't remember the last time we went to the theater to see something that wasn't horror related.

And, I agree. Nothing this year so far that has had us rushing to the cinema to see. Of course, the last horror film we saw at the theater was Slither, lol.

Good stuff coming from NetFlix though, and that has pretty much made the theater obsolete, to me anyway. $40 for a family outing at the theater or $8.99 a month for all the horror I can take. I'll stick with NetFlix. At least if the movie sucks, I'm not pissed all the way home:)
