The Howling (1981) This film was based on a novel by Gary Brander and set to a screenplay by John Sayles and Terrence Winkless. The film was directed by Joe Dante: The main cast includes: Dee Wallace Stone as Karen White Patrick McNee as Dr. George Waggner Dennis Dugan as Chris Belinda Belaski as Terry Fisher Elisabeth Brooks as Marsha Quist Christoper Stone as Bill Robert Picardo as Eddie Quist Karen White, a TV news anchor, is stalking out serial killer Eddie Quist. The setup is made for Karen to meet Eddie in a porno theatre. When Karen sees Eddie she screams and Eddie is shot. After this Karen, then suffers with amnesia. Her therapist, Dr. Waggner, recommends that both she & her husband Bill go to a place called The Colony which is run by the doctor. The Colony has its fair share of unusual persons such as Marsha Quist, a nymphomaniac and the sister of Eddie Quist. She tries to seduce Bill but he resists. Bill is then attacked by an animal, namely a werewolf. Chris & Terry, Karen's friends find Eddie's apartment which has all kind of unusual drawings and a picture of Karen. It also has a drawing of an unusual landscape. When the two discover that Eddie's body is no longer at the morgue, they research info on werewolves and Chris buys a pack of silver bullets. Meanwhile Marsha seduces Bill and they both turn into werewolves. Karen then summons Terry to meet with her at The Colony. While there Terry discovers that a scene there was the same as the drawing in Eddie's room. Terry is then killed by Eddie. Chris comes to The Colony and he and Karen learn the truth about it. All the members are werewolves including Dr. Wagner. They escape shooting several members with silver bullets. During the escape their car is attcked and Karen gets bitten. To prove that such a place exists Karen does her prime time TV show and to the amazement of all turns into a werewolf on the air. She is then shot dead by Chris. To me this is one of the best werewolf films ever made. I rank it second only to the original Wolf Man with Lon Chaney, Jr. The werewolf transformations are superb and the film does not lack for action, tension and terror. This is a great horror film. This film is not for the tepid or squeamish. For a horror buff like me it's GRRRRReat! Yep, it's available on DVD and belongs in any horror film buff's collection. The Duchess |
