The 25 Cheesiest Films Ever Made!

Piranha 3D's Painful Predecessors!

What is it about science-fiction and horror movies that unleashes the cinematic cheese? From hilarious atomic monsters to UFOs dangling from strings, the history of genre films is riddled with patently absurd imagery.

With Piranha 3D chewing its way into theaters Friday, the flesh-ripping–fish franchise — which got its start in the '70s at the hands of schlock-shock producer Roger Corman — aims for a bloodletting upgrade by showcasing the carnage in three-dimensional splendor.

Director Alexander Aja's modern-day reboot brings to mind a welter of predecessors that made melodramatic mincemeat from mutant DNA, flimsy rocket science, stiff acting and hilariously un-special "special effects."

To assemble this round-up of sci-fi's cheesiest hits, Wired.com recruited Pyschotronic Film Society founder Mike Flores, a specialist in B movies. Also weighing in are the movie-mocking madmen from Mystery Science Theater 3000 spinoff RiffTrax.

  • The Creeping Terror
    Killer Shrews

Bet they forgot a few good ones. If you ask me, I wouldn't add Tremors, Cloverfield or the Titans remake to this list. They aren't painfully cheesy for chrissakes!

No Killer Klowns or Frankenfish? Come on...

Doc and NE should chip in with some good vintage ones.

Elvis and Ferox note - check out the cover of Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity.

You should check out Slither, MD, lots of fun to watch.

I'd have put Eight Legged Freaks on that list.

I don't feel as though Slither belongs on that list right next to Troll 2... I actually thought that Slither was a blast... Most of those movies seem unintentionally funny, but Slither was purposefully so.

And how is Cloverfield cheesy? Its on the same list as BARBARELLS for Christ's sake.

Maybe they're just trying to piss diehard fans off...

Personally, I think "The Evil Brain From Outer Space" should be on the list, that movies was hilariously cheesy, almost as bad as Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Gotta check that out!

I thought Barbarella was really lame. It just flat out sucks.

I didn't think much of Slither the first time I watched it but it's grown on me and now i think it's solid. Wouldn't class it as cheesy... not sure why Cloverfield is on there?

Actually, which Slither is it referring to?

I'd say the recent one.

The 1973 one with James Caan isn't a sci-fi/horror flick.
