What do you recommend?

I'm looking for movies along the lines of the grudge/the ring etc.
I want it to have some sort of demonic prescence/evil spirit..or really any sort of ghost/paranormal phenomena. I love mystery thrillers, infact a film I watched recently really fit the bill it was called case 39...so if any one can suggest any movies along them lines, I'd really appreciate it, even if it's only loosely based on my criteria.

thanks for reading
Regards
DC :D

The Changeling (1980) is a masterpiece of horror/suspence with a fantastic performace by George C Scott in the lead role. It is a little slow by today's standards, but rewarding as hell is you stick with it. Ringu/The Ring borrowed heavily from this film's plot and themes. A must see!

The Devil's Backbone/Espinazo del Diablo (2001) is Guillermo Del Toro's sublime Spanish Civil War-era ghost story. Pure poetry. Be forewarned the film is in Spanish, so if subtitles turn you off, you probably won't enjoy this one. But then again if subtitles turn you off, you're mising out on a whole world of amazing cinema.

The Sentinel (1977) sort of fits your criteria. It is a fucked-up, odd film with uneven pacing but a fantastically twisted tale and true white-knuckle freak-out scenes. If perverse sexuality bothers you, stay away from this one.

Ghost Story (1981) has it's flaws, but it is a classic, gothic ghost tale that any fan of the supernatural should watch.

The Haunting (1963) is, without a doubt, the best haunted house movie ever made. Brilliantly understated, it has none of the big jump scares used in contemporary films, but instead relies on sound effects and acting to develop an all-encompassing sense of dread.

watch these, then move on to
House (1986)
Hausu (1977)
Poltergeist (1982)
Kaidan (1964)
Onibaba (1964)

Although these are easy picks that you've probably seen already, the original Omen, and Rosemary's Baby are obviouse must see horror flicks, with a nice sense of evil, and great plot/plot twists.

If you like Asian cinema then I suggest Reincarnation- it has supernatural happenings and an intriguing mystery.
