Jack Ketchum
Has anyone read any books by Jack Ketchum? If not, you should check him out if you're into psychological type horror. I highly reccomend 'Off Season' the UNEXPURGATED Edition :D :D :D

Oh, yeah -- Ketchum is definitely one of the best (and a really nice guy as well). OFFSEASON is great, as is RED (though RED isn't really horror, it's sure to stick with you for a looooong time). Also check out JOYRIDE, STRANGLEHOLD, and his collection PEACABLE KINGDOM.
My favorite Ketchum novel, however -- in fact, one of my favorite novels from anyone *ever* -- is THE GIRL NEXT DOOR. Perhaps the most brutal thing I have ever read. You *must* get this one. I have this version, though it's also available in a slightly cheaper trade paperback: http://store.yahoo.com/shocklines/girnexdoorby1.html Trust me. You will *not* be disappointed . . . . Thanks dmihatmttl, I've only read Off Season and The Lost so far but I'll be sure to check out his other books too. Especially Girl Next Door! I think he's quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. :)

I agree--The Girl next Door is one of the best novels EVER, of any genre. Though I like most of Ketchum's stuff, Girl stands head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. I've read everything mentioned, and just picked up a copy of the novella Right to Life. Any good?
Speaking of brutal, has anyone read Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian or James Carlos Blake's Wildwood Boys and In The Rogue Blood? Not horror, but all beautifully written and very, very disturbing. |

Hi, Dr. Kelvinstein. Cool to see another fan of THE GIRL NEXT DOOR in here!
RIGHT TO LIFE is good, but not great. I think I was just a tad disappointed after hearing so much about it. But I still liked it. Same for LADIES' NIGHT. Cool, but I wouldn't list it as a favorite by any means. Dammit, I keep hearing so much about BLOOD MERIDIAN -- I'm gonna have to pick that one up soon. I too was disappointed with Ladies' Night.

Ketchum is my favorite author thus far but I haven't read Ladies Night yet. Actually when I recently found out that they were making a movie of it I went and ordered a copy for 16 bux, but I don't expect to be disappointed.

Don't get me wrong -- I enjoyed LADIES' NIGHT, and I think you will too. It just wasn't one of my favorites from Ketchum.
Let us know what you think of it! James N. http://members.tripod.com/~NEWMANATOR/index.html |
Just finished reading Ladies Night and I'll agree that it wasn't his best writing, but it did start to get really good near the end. I'm still trying to imagine what the movie will be like, but we'll see. I wasn't disappointed, but I'll agree that I was expecting better. Does that make sense?
