HDC Weekly Debate #3: Should Religion be binding on each citizen in the society?
 

Continuing the series...


How big of a role does religion play in shaping our modern society? We all know that religion brings with itself a sense of discipline in daily life and also, a feeling of fellowness and morality in a human being's life cycle in the society.

Should it be bound on every citizen so that they can lead a well-maintained, easy-going and disciplined life...friendly and together with their neighbors, family and friends? Which might eventually lead to peace and contentment within the frameworks of the lifestyles.

Or should it be kept at a distance? Because each person, citizen or not, is born free and will die free, someday...so he/she has the right to choose the type of life he wants to lead.

Also, deeply religious people can become clammy and shut away from the world. We have seen what religious zealots are capable of. And the scientologists...the lesser said, the better.

What about atheism? Aren't many atheists cool people in society?

Are we evolving into a Freudian society eventually? Or will Scientology play a dominant role in the coming years?

The final question which leaves us - Can religion play any sort of role in curbing the sociopathic violence which has been a hallmark of man's descent into all sorts of immoral actions today?

Can these things NOT be acheived WITHOUT religion?

Many people have been slaughtered in the name of religion...Many wars have been caused by conflicts between religions



In my opinion...Religion is a very personal thing, based on each individual's deepest, personal, fundamental beliefs...Not everyone believes in the same things, or thinks the same way (which is how it should be), so religions are bound to clash...I think that people should worship whomever and however they choose, but they should keep it to themselves (not try to tell others that they SHOULD believe the same things they do) as it is a personal choice...And if some people choose not to worship anyone or anything, that's their personal decision, too.

Our Constitution guarantees separation of church & state. It also guarantees freedom of religion- which by default guarantees freedom FROM religion.

If it were determined that religion should be mandatory...How would it be determined WHICH religion everyone should follow?

religion is a lifestyle choice. You believe something because you believe it. You can't have somebody say "You must be a christian/hindu/sikh etc." You must believe in the religion to live the life of one properly. And yes, it teaches good morals, but it also divides a community. It's like government. I try to not talk to people about government much because there are such clear divisions. Religion must be believed in to be chosen, and can't be forced on anyone. We are free and nobody but yourself can make you truly religious.
