Troll

Warner Brothers Warns Guy Who Named Harry Potter A Decade Before JK Rowling

In something of a followup to the story of JK Rowling's testimony over a guide book to the Harry Potter universe, Petréa Mitchell writes in to point us to the news that moviemaker Helmer John Buechler is planning to make a remake of his 1986 movie Troll.
What's that got to do with Harry Potter? Well, it just so happens that the lead character of the movie happens to be named Harry Potter. Rowling's first Harry Potter book came out over a decade after the movie. While I'd be willing to bet the whole thing is a coincidence (or, at the very least a totally unintentional/subconscious reuse of the name), that isn't preventing Warner Brothers (who owns the rights to Rowling's Harry Potter) from making some vaguely worded, but ominous sounding warnings to Buechler, telling him "If these producers intend to remake Troll they'd better tread carefully not to infringe on our rights." Funny how they say that about a character that was invented over a decade before WB's own Harry Potter, isn't it?

So... any thoughts? And has anyone seen Troll? From the IMDB review I guess it totally sucks.

He should've copyrighted the name. Studios are real dicks sometimes with this kinda shit. 20th Century Fox came down pretty hard on a brewery called Duffs over here. The guy that ran it didn't copyright the name or anything because I guess its a small independent brewery in a small town and he didn't even think to do it. But it was Duffs a long time before The Simpsons were around. Fox came down on them and made them change the name... hows a small business meant to fight a massive corporation like those cunts? Greedy fuckin' suit n' tie parasites.

the production companies are psychotic about protecting intellectual property. Fox is so bad that the video game mod community has the term "Foxed" to describe a mod that has been shut down because it uses subject matter owned by a studio. Fox has done it to Aliens and Stargate mods for Halflife 2. A matrix mod for the first halflife was killed the same way.

They care about their profit margin, and want complete control over anything they own. they dont share. ever.

Oh yeah, and troll is a HORRIBLE movie. manages to be entertaining, yet boring. And michael moritarty has the most god-awful dance scene ever put to celluloid. yes, even worse than vandamme.

Oh. My. God.

There was one scene I liked though, when the kid is in the car turning into a tree or something. And that popcorn scene... what the hell was that?? :D
