The First Official HDC Oscar Awards

Hello everyone and welcome to the first ever HDC Horror Oscar Awards ceremony.

I am your host and presenter for this rather prestigious event. As you all know, our own well-respected member, Tic, had this idea for a community project about a month back. Plenty of us became a part of it and sent in our choices in each individual category, and then the selected judges presided over the choice of winners for each HDC Horror Oscar.

Before we start, I would like to thank Tic for this novel idea, and each of the judges who took (a long) time out of their busy schedules to contemplate and debate in each category, and finally, to all the members who went through the categories and sent in their nominations.

We will start in reverse order of the Awards, so that the best and biggest Awards are reserved for the end.

First up, is The Horror Film Which Has/Had Made The Most Impact On The Audience. The nominees are :-

Dracula (1931)
Night of the living Dead (1968)
The Exorcist (1973)
Jaws (1975)
Halloween (1978)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)

And, the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

THE EXORCIST

Loosely based on the documented exorcism of a 12 year old boy in 1949, and showing a condensed version of the actual Rite of Exorcism.

A very controversial movie, it’s impact on audiences had them fainting, screaming and becoming genuinely terrified during the original showing of this movie, and still has the same impact today, almost 30 years after it’s release.

For The Person Who Has Attempted To Single-Handedly Destroy Horror, the voters were unanimous in their choice. It was only ONE person nominated...and of course he went on to win.

The unanimous choice, of the voters and the judges, folks...The HDC Horror Razzie goes to...

Here’s what Wiki has to say about the man who brought not only horror, but other genre’s to the forefront of the cinematic world, and who also manages to combine genre’s, very successfully, to give us some of the best movies around

“John Howard Carpenter is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, film score composer and occasional actor. Carpenter has worked in numerous film genres, and is considered one of the most accomplished and influential horror and science fiction directors in Hollywood”.

“With a career that has spanned over thirty years, John Carpenter has attained a reputation as a respected independent filmmaker. Many horror/sci-fi/indie filmmakers have expressed admiration for Carpenter's work, including Robert Rodriguez, Paul W.S. Anderson, Guillermo Del Toro, Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino”

And the judges are in agreement

“…whether he's directing or producing, he's put a lot of horror out there for a lot of people…”

“…The majority of his films whether horror or not, have become talking points. A genuine lover of horror himself and it shows...”

“…His films whether by luck or good decisions have been blessed with good stories and the crew to accompany them…”

“…His movies, ranging from Halloween to Escape from New York, he showed the finer talents of a genius, and the simplicity of a prodigy. All his movies struck deep chords with the audiences everywhere...which explains why everyone loved John Carpenter so much that even a bad movie carrying the tag "John Carpenter Presents" was bound to have people watching it.

The man is a living example in himself…”

The Best Horror Film of the Year 2007 HDC Horror Oscar was pretty much a keenly contested category between two excellent movies.

The nominees are...

28 Weeks later
Fido
Grindhouse
Pan's Labyrinth

And, after much deliberation, the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

GRINDHOUSE

Bringing back the grind house experience that was so well known in the late 60s and early 70s with all sorts of politically incorrect themes such as Black exploitation, Sex exploitation, Shock exploitation, Cannibal films, Zombie films, Slasher films, and much more.

Interlaced with trailers for other movies in between them, Grind House was such a movie experience. Not a lot of people cared for Quentin Tarantino’s film Death Proof due to it’s dialogue but if they would have reversed the order of which they showed the films I am sure the critics and crowd would have liked it more.

Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror was shown first and was an in your face, fast paced, sci-fi, horror, action flick with lots of laughs, gore, and fun. In between we got to see fake trailers directed by greats like Rob Zombie, Edgar Wright, Eli Roth, and Robert Rodriguez himself.

After the trailers Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof played and it was just as great. Some of the best car chase sequences and action. And not to forget the death scene that just won an award for Most Memorable Mutilation at the Scream 2007 Awards. This movie is definitely the best horror flick of 2007!

Wow.

This may just be the hardest descision ever! There was some anger involved in choosing these and it was close, but in the end one stood victorious. A film which made Claymation kinda scary and put Father Christmas in pain.
