Most definitely watch The Burning. If you cant find it anywhere, some guy posted it on youtube a couple weeks ago. Its a little similar to Friday the 13th, but much better.
Watch Halloween III, but without watching the other Halloweens around the same time. The film stands on its own. If you can track down Black Christmas, I recommend that as well. Also, you cant go wrong watching the original TCM. I consider that the greatest horror film ever made. |
The Haunting (1963)
Sleepy Hollow Night of the Living Dead The Shining The Horror of Dracula (Hammer) Halloween The Thing Carrie The Phantom of the Opera (silent) Ghost Story Shaun of the Dead An American Werewolf in London |
Anything by Dario Argento, especially:
Suspiria Deep Red Tenebrae The Bird With the Crystal Plumage Anything produced by Val Lewton, especially: Cat People (1942) The Leopard Man I Walked With a Zombie Also try: Eraserhead The Brood |
All the other suggestions are wonderful. I would add a couple of random things...
HORROR HOTEL (great movie) NEON MANIACS (cheesy fun) THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (fantasy with lots of monsters!) DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN (best awful horror film ever!) ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD (scary-as-hell Disney!) |
Oh, and, if I had to pick one Argento film, it would certainly be DEEP RED because it is extremely stylish, and delivers the blood, but it also has a solid story and fun characters...I think of it as Argento's best.

A great 80's horror film is April Fool's Day. Definitely add that to your list.

Motel Hell is one of my all time favorites because of its dark humour and all round craziness. |
