Man in jail for not having car insurance beaten to death in Sherburne County
A man that was put in jail for failing to have proof of his insurance has died after he was assaulted by another inmate with a handicap railing.
Carl Edward Moyle, 28, was pronounced dead late Wednesday night at Unity Hospital after being severely beaten at the Sherburne County Jail. The inmate suspected of the crime has been identified as Bruce Christianson and was in Sherburne County Jail for an assault charge from a day earlier. He was driving his brother's truck to work when he was pulled over and arrested in Elk River. His family says the proof of insurance was at home in a drawer and not in the glove box. Moyle's family told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that they are stunned and very upset. His brother Byron Moyle said he brought the proof of insurance to the police department after work Tuesday, but it was already closed. He doesn't think his brother shouldn't have been in jail all day long for a traffic stop. "I want to know why it happened, ya' know?" said Moyle's brother Byron Moyle. "If he was arrested at 8 a.m. in the morning, why wasn't he in court that day and released?" Moyle Family members say that the Sheriff explained to them that Christianson took a handicap railing off of a stall in the bathroom, took it to the cell where Moyle was sleeping with his back turned to Christianson, and then Christianson simply beat Moyle to death. Sherburne County officials say that driving without insurance is a gross misdemeanor offense and it is not unusual for people to be brought in for gross misdemeanors. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS did find that Moyle had two prior charges for driving without insurance. The case is currently under investigation and Sherburne County officials may release more information as the investigation continues. |
I see a story like this and I think to myself..."there is MUCH more to this story that I am not hearin."

Unfortunately it's a thing that happens too often. They can and sometimes do end up killing a person. I've seen it done to people, so I'm not making this shit up. Anyway, I'm gonna shut up now. Don't want to waste time of people that don't believe this kind of shit happens.

Definitely sounds like a wrongful death action for the county. That's a sad story.

What I wonder though....most people who have forgotten there insurance card do not get a one way ticket to JAIL,you know? I have done this myself-along with my license. And to have a violent incident in jail is not as common as one might imagine-now PRISON on the other hand...happens alot. I don't know from personal experiance but have known enough people who worked at jails and prisons to realize there is a difference between the two.I have known only one person who was actually IN both. So my point was, there had to be more to this story,MY guess is that was alot of drama surrounding it and horrible misunderstandings involved. Although, don't get me wrong-NO one deserves to die like that. That man dying is tragic. (unless of course we are talking about pedophiles-and they deserve everything horrible under the sun ) |
Carl Moyle, was a very good friend of mine. He was arrested for no insurance and for a cracked windsheild. The pickup he had was his brother byrons. Thats why the insurance was not on Carl or in his possesion. In sherburne county if you get 2 no ins. tickets in 1 year you do go directly to jail. Bruce Christensonhad been admitted from the Oak Park Heights max prison for court on another assault and battery charge. Bruce was admitted to St. cloud until he was transferred to Oak Park as a result from slashing another inmates throught in the chow line. On tape he was seen holding his head in his hands and shaking his head. He then got up and went to the commons bathroom and kicked the railing from the wall. He stuffed the pipe down his pants and went to Carls cell. Carl was asleep on his top bunk when the attack took place. Carl made it through the attack and died close to an hour after he was rushed to the e.r. at Mercy hosp.. Carl's brother Byron went to the cop shop and presented the ins. paper only to find that the cop shop was closed. If they would have been open Carl would have never been killed. If there is any more comments or questions about this i will be happy to share them with you.

Is there a lawsuit in the future? if ever an incident called for one, i think this would be it.
I dont believe in suing mcdonalds if you are stupid enough to belive it is healthy (i never bought that by the way....), but wrongful death is a COMPLETELY different matter. |

They need to change the law on this one-to go to jail for not having an insurance card-even if you got caught twice without one, should not result in death or any kind of injury. I am glad I now know this side of the story. Again-Thank You |
not to mention that even if they still send them to jail.... How about sequestering "Insurance card man" from "Shivved someone in line man"?
Just a suggestion. |

I live in Minneapolis. Take care of yourself and please pass on our condolences from HDC to his family (if I may be so bold to speak for the forum). Stick around, this is a pretty cool place. :) |
