Girl Murdered, Burned And Chopped Up With Saw...Teens Charged
Spat Over Boy Led To Teen's Murder
Other teens sawed 16-year-old's charred body into pieces. DIXON, Illinois -- A dispute over a boy led to the murder and dismemberment of a teenage girl who was new to town, prosecutors said Wednesday as a murder trial got under way. Adrianne Reynolds was 16 and had just moved to East Moline from Longview, Texas, about two months earlier. She was trying to fit in at a new school when she got to know Sarah Kolb, prosecutors said. On January 21, 2005, the two girls were in Kolb's car at a fast-food restaurant when they got into a fight over a boy. Prosecutors say Kolb and a teenage boy who was in the car with them killed Reynolds, then later burned and dismembered her body and hid the remains in two counties. Kolb's defense attorney, David Hoffman, warned jurors that the witnesses' testimony would be riddled with gossip and second-hand facts. "I want you to pay close attention to the rumor, innuendo, opinion and what purports to be news as opposed to what people actually know," Hoffman said in his opening statement Wednesday. Kolb, 17, is charged with first-degree murder and concealing a homicide. Her first trial ended in a mistrial last fall after jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction. The other teen, Cory Gregory, 18, is scheduled to stand trial May 1. Both face up to 60 years in prison if convicted. "Adrianne Reynolds' fatal mistake in judgment was she tried to befriend the defendant, Sarah Kolb," Rock Island County State's Attorney Jeff Terronez told the jury. Kolb killed Reynolds, prosecutors said, because Reynolds tried to get Kolb's boyfriend to break up with her and had gone on a date with Gregory. Kolb testified at her first trial that she was angry over Reynolds' interest in her boyfriend, but she said she only yelled and pulled Reynolds' hair before Gregory killed her. She said Gregory threatened to kill her, her family and her cats if she reported the crime. Prosecutors during that trial contended that Kolb held Reynolds' arms while Gregory strangled her. The teens then took the body to Kolb's grandparents' farm in rural Mercer County and burned it, according to the prosecutors. Two days later, prosecutors say, the pair returned with a third teen, sawed the body into pieces and disposed of it in a creek on the farm and at Blackhawk State Park in Rock Island. |
