Respected horror movies?

I'm putting this under modern because the older horror movies are generally respected anyways.

So, in a genre that's usually looked down upon, what horror movies are generally respected in the movie community? I know The Exorcist is, and to a lesser extent, Halloween (the original), but what other ones?

Silence of the Lambs and The Shining have got some recognition, esp. Silence. Se7en is fairly respected also, though it could be contested as a horror movie.

There's probably more, but not very many.

Blair Witch in its own way (for being wildly successful - and building fear without showing anything at all)

for the most part I'll agree, but Last House on the Left is almost universally panned in the movie community. I've only read 2 positive reviews, all the rest were like 0 stars

I would say "Dawn of the Dead" (the original), no?

It is a horror film study in radical political theory...

liebesspiel 01-30-2006 07:38 PM

I'd say Carrie, Friday the 13th, The Evil Dead, Poltergeist and A Nightmare On Elm Street... but I could be wrong, who knows...

HorrorGuru, liebesspiel

You guys are naming classics which STE stated for the most part already have respect.

Maybe this wasn't the best community to ask.
