absolutely any movie can deserve a sequel .. except for the films that ended with no where left to go. (the complete story was told - wrapped up)
The problem with most sequels up to now is that more often than not (esp. with horror) the origional director is not at the helm.
Many of them were made without the anticipation of a sequal .. but someone later - usually a hack - saw a way to make money off video rentals so they whore off some piece of trash knowing it will get rented because of the name. And the hack is usually someone who's just getting their start in the business.
Or someone who has proven that they can get a film made without going over the tiny budget. (a very valuable skill in hollywood)
Sequals have also suffered when its the same director because the director loses the vision - or hunger - or interest by the time they had to do the sequal. Or worse yet they tried to lazily recreate the exact working formula of the 1st movie.
There have been great sequals ...if they were all great we'd be eagerly anticipating sequals for every film. Unfortunately they are not the norm and the hourde of bad ones have given sequels their bad name.
Almost any movie deserves a sequel ... but every sequel deserves a great cast and crew.
And lets face it .. most movies - if made well - leave us wondering what happened to the characters we grew interested in ..
In a lot of cases its fun to find out.
But doing a sequal for the sake of making the bling bling ... and writing a pathetic treatment just to drag those characters out on screen with nothing or very little to say or do ... (as is more often than not the case) .. well thats pointless.
