Sympathizing with the bad guys

How many of you sympathize with the bad guys in movies? Are there any movies in particular that bring out this sympathy? Do you always sympathize with the good guys?

I find myself sympathizing with the good guys MOST of the time. There are 2 series that I can think of that make me sympathize with the bad guys.
Those are the Predator films and the Puppetmaster films.

You guys?

Freddy Krueger. 07-09-2004 01:06 PM

Good Guys SUCK! Bad Guys Rule!

Poor Mr. Freeze. He was stilling the crystals to save his beloved wife.

Freddy. He was abused as a child. Both mentaly and pysicaly. All he wanted was to kill the children. Is that so much to ask for?

Jason. He fucking retarded. And disfigured.

Lepherchaun. If I was as gay as him, I wouldve killed myself ages ago.

Pinhead. If I was as gay as him, I wouldve killed myself the minute I was born.

Egekrusher 07-09-2004 01:19 PM

Ha, you fucking crack me up man.

Hannibal.....totally intelligent , classy, sexy......despite his age.

In the book, you even really sympathize with his motives for killing.........love the beast........I'd be supper. :( ;)

This dude from "The Funhouse". His daddy abused him and he had a little problem with premature ejaculation.

Miss Britt 07-09-2004 06:09 PM

I can sympathize with all charachters, except those without motives...
Normally in the movies the bad guys kill because of lost love or companionship, and I can agree with that... lol

moonsorrow 07-09-2004 06:20 PM

how about if we look at it this way...there is no good guy, and there is no bad guy...only a series of circumstances that brings one person on the wrong side of the law and vice versa.... when it comes to survival would you realy mind having the cops hate you a little bit?
but to be a little more simple... i have no symapthy, your choice is your own, that goes for the guys on the tv as well.

WUF0NGTAN 07-09-2004 07:19 PM

i think what the movie industry needs is a few movies where the "badguy" wins. ffs take for instance when i was watching pirates of the carribean (sp) i was enjoying it untill it got near the end and it dawned on me that, the good guys are gonna win as always which sucks. it ruins the movie. i mean whats the use of watching the last ten minutes of any horror movie? they all end the same. except for noes, fridaythe13th's and halloween. they mightn't win excatly but they don't excatly lose. if ya know what i mean. Some ofthe best movies ever have been when the bad guy wins like usal suspects. fantastic movie. one ofthe best ever. and lonesome dove. prolly the best western ever. even though there wasn't a excatly goodguys bad guys element to it. it just was a movie where just cause you was a main character didn't mean you was gonna make it through.

mothermold 07-09-2004 09:10 PM

i root for the "bad" guys.in the case of parallel "bad" guys...human(usually toadies and spinless pricks)and monsters/aliens i root for the monsters.as for gauge after louis stuck him with that needle he should have finished him off with a right cross...perfect!!

just a drunken ramble is all.... ay...usualy dont drink that much... im slightley hung over, sympathise with me!

Egekrusher 07-10-2004 06:18 AM

I wasn't thinking right or wrong side of the law so much as morally right or wrong. As stated earlier in the thread, quite a few of the "bad guys" are abused and misunderstood. I can very much sympathize with these people.

Sometimes too much. Especially serial killers. I've read quite a few books on the subject, and I would actually fit the profile of a serial killer quite well (though I could never kill someone... except maybe my stepmother).

xGuardianx03 07-10-2004 08:05 AM

Definately felt sympathy for Sean in King of the Ants. Although he wasn't quite a bad guy, he wasn't quite a good guy either.

I'd also have to say Bub from Day of the Dead. The most innocent and childlike zombie i've ever seen.

xGuardianx03 07-10-2004 08:09 AM

Oh yeah. I forgot to add Herbert West. He never meant to hurt anyone. It's all in the name of science. Poor misunderstood guy. :(

I can never decide if Sean in KOTA is the good guy or the bad guy. I sympathised with Ron Livingston while Sean threw a refrigerator on him, but while Sean was being beat with a golf club, I was on his side. Awesome movie that way.

Stingy Jack 07-10-2004 08:23 AM

I never sympathize with the bad guy. I would make a good juror because I don't let things like "feelings" get in the way of objectivity. A guy is abused as a kid, so that gives him the right to kill other people? Hell no! I mean, it sucks that he was abused but he still needs to be punished for any crimes he commits.

Felt the same way for Sean in KOTA. I mean, the guy commits this heinous murder for money and then is all scared that someone might kill him. I admit that the torture was "cruel and unusual", but the cocksucker brought it on himself.

Fuck Hannibal. Sure, he's sexy and sophisticated .. but look at the facts. He kills people for pleasure and eats 'em.

Of course, I don't sympathize with the good guys either if they have it coming to them. I mean, if you're having premarital sex, you asked for a machete through your chest. :D Just kidding about that one.

Herbert West, I agree. I could really see his side of the whole ordeal. He was trying to accomplish something that would benefit humankind! I mean, it's classic utilitarianism. The ends justify the means. Of course, he shouldn't have killed his roommate's cat without asking first.

LoL! Yeah, that's true. And the roommate didn't really seem to mind once he found out what Herbert was up to.

Flash " my god she's really turning me on !"
Dale "what ?!"

Zero 11-15-2006 08:17 AM

this is a tricky question - i can sympathize with the villain - frankenstein is an easy example - to some extent jason or michael (at least in early 'wounded child demon' mode) - even in Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer - I can sympathize with the traumas that would bring someone to do these horrific crimes.

which brings me to the devil's rejects - i can sympathize but i cannot revel in sadism. . . its just not in me.
