Paranormal Activity

I've only seen the first one. I did not like it. Stupid people doing stupid things. Some of the effects were alright.

Are any of the sequels worth watching?

metternich1815 09-11-2015 02:15 PM

I know it gets a lot of hate, but I love the first one. It was absolutely brilliant. Unlike many modern horror films, it utilizes genuine suspense rather than relying on cheap jump scares. Of course, many modern audiences do not have much of an attention span, in what I have observed. Of the sequels, the second and third were good, but not as good as the first by a long shot. Any after that are just stupid. The fifth does not even try to be scary.

horcrux2007 09-11-2015 02:24 PM

I loved all 5

maniak 09-18-2015 01:31 AM

It's way underrated

For me, Paranormal Activity 1 along with The Blair Witch Project and The Grudge were the most terrifying movies I've ever watched. Like ever! And trust me, I've watched a few! I don't like to spoil my experience so that's why I always watch my horror movies alone!

Jake.Ashworth 09-18-2015 05:04 AM

I appreciate the attempt, and somewhat enjoyed the first one. My biggest complaint is the predictability. I mean, yeah, ghosts/demons/things move stuff and shake lights and bang around. That's what they do... in every movie... ever. Paranormal Activity worked because it felt realistic, it worked on the same level Blair Witch worked when it came out. I remember when Blair Witch was being teased, it played like it was real, they had investigative web sites and gave it a life. Then I went and saw it the night it came out, at midnight. I was so disappointed. It was fun, but not scary. That's how I felt about Paranormal Activity, fun, but not scary.

The best horror franchise running today.

That's not saying much...

I am excited for the new one though. It looks like it might be pretty good.

tfantasy 09-19-2015 07:09 AM

I liked all of them, however, I don't know if I will actually ever buy them.

Pleasant Nightmares 09-20-2015 05:24 PM

I honestly don't understand the hatred this movie receives. It was the same thing with The Blair Witch Project. The hatred of the sequels, I can sort of understand, what with the milking of something that worked in previous years instead of pushing innovation. I get that. But it's clear the first of the series were not meant for the massive exposure that they wound up getting, and for the modest budgets they had, they did damn well.

A lot of the gripe they get seems to stem from the fact that you never see the demon/witch/monster, too, and I honestly find that to be the braver approach. Am I the only one of the opinion that the true art of horror is in the anticipation? That instant gratification attitude is what stuck us with so many crappy slasher porns that were such a disservice to the genre.

Just saying.

roshiq 09-23-2015 01:43 AM

Not a great fan of the series but yeah....PA 1, 3, Tokyo Night & Marked Ones were fairly entertaining, IMO.

Frank Lefanu 09-24-2015 03:39 PM

Some of the worst, most boring shit ever.

However, I found the spin-off "The Marked Ones" to be much more entertaining. Hopefully the next spin-off, "The Ghost Protocol" doesn't revert to the slow, boring approach of the original series.

OLO 10-06-2015 10:23 AM

the first Paranormal Activity was a fun watch, was entertaining and interesting... it built the suspense. was good, and it helped watching it with someone who was also pumped to see it.

the Second Paranormal Activity was extremely long, dry, boring... just Awful.

I personally thought that Paranormal Activity 3 was the best. more action, more set-ups, suspense was more constant and done with much more creativity. A great fun watch that left a bunch of us talking and making fun jokes of Toby afterwards for a while.

I have hated all the witch stuff though otherwise... found the 4th one boring, and uneventful... 5th one was just BLEH with the storyline i thought, but was ok i guess.

horcrux2007 10-06-2015 10:32 AM

I actually really like witch/coven movies, and maybe that's why I like all 5 of them. The first one is a classic to me; the second and third almost match the original. The fourth and fifth are good too.

On another note, do you think The Ghost Dimension will have anything to do with The Marked Ones, or will TMO just be a completely separate story?

Vodstok 10-06-2015 09:44 PM

I like 1 and 2, and 3 was adequate. After that it got boring and "okay, we get it, demons and witches and shit. Yep, Katie is in THIS ONE TOO. GOT IT"

TheBossInTheWall 10-07-2015 05:59 AM

So the consensus is...none. Ya'll've been so helpful.... ;)

horcrux2007 10-07-2015 06:27 AM

If you didn't like the first one, don't watch the sequels. The PA series is an acquired taste, so if slow movies aren't your thing, just stay away from it. The good thing about the sequels is that they do expand the mythology. Maybe I just like them because it's difficult for me to get bored during a movie.

I've only seen the first and it seemed like the one thing that got people's attention was the woman being moved around without seeing what's moving her. The rest seemed like a typical mediocre horror flic. The boyfriend(husband?) harassing the entity when told not to was so annoyingly bad. That's why I asked if any of the others were worth watching since they're very popular.

i dont disagree with with you here... most people i know also disliked the arrogance and stupidity of the guy as well.

have you seen the third one though? the third one i felt was the best, more action, much more creative aspects involved... just a better overall movie throughout. still same style though. me and friends were talking on it and joking around with some of the parts afterwards for awhile... enjoyable!!!

I'm with you, I thought the first one was brilliant, and scary. I actually had trouble sleeping, though I was at a point in my life where I kind of believed in that stuff. The sequels are like Halloween sequels--they are ruined by backstory, and much, much inferior.

I quit on P3 finding it not unnerving at all.

Loredonna 12-12-2015 08:14 AM

I loved the First one. Part of my enjoyment was that when I saw it in the theater this guy jumped over the railing and ran out of the theater. His girlfriend was left sitting there with this "Really??" look on her face. I liked 2 and 3 and how everything tied together. 4 needs to be put in a toilet. 4.5 (The Marked Ones) was ok and in The Ghost Dimension when you finally see the monster he looks like the bad guy from Fern Gully.

Ghoulies4Life 03-26-2016 07:24 PM

I wrote Katie Featherston a letter and she wrote me back. That is all.

Chevalier 03-31-2016 08:32 PM

I have watched all of them, because I generally believe in not judging a movie before I watched it. The mainstream media have completely hammered movies that would later become cult classics, and standards within their genre. It's a Wonderful Life, Blade Runner, and Citizen Cain are all great examples.

I doubt any found footage film will live up to those examples though.

bats 05-16-2016 01:56 AM

i only saw the first one. i enjoyed it but that might have been because i watched it with a friend in her new apartment which was in an old creaky spooky building and we had a lot of fun with the movie, however i don't know how much i would have liked it if i watched it on my own. i think it might have been a little boring if i had not been with someone and in a good horror movie setting.
i never bothered with the rest of he series but might give them a try at some point. it is usually my opinion the a series decreases in quality the longer it goes on and when it starts out as something i enjoyed in the right setting but i don't know if i would really call myself a fan of-i just have a hard time putting in the effort of finding the movies and sitting through them so if i happened across the second one on a streaming service or something i would give it a try but if that doesn't happen i don't think i will be missing out. ::devil::

I tried PA:The Ghost Dimension. Gave it I think...3/10? It is not worth your time once you've seen the first film because its basically the same script with a few alterations.

that one looked pretty bad. at that point it seemed to be that they were just beating a dead horse.

What are everyone's thoughts on the alternative ending?

i kind of hate alternate endings just in general plus that one was cheap and lame in my opinion so i am not a fan.

Smeg Head1 06-18-2016 01:43 AM

I recently watched all the Paranormal Activity movies, including Tokyo Night.

I really like these movies! Something about them keeps me coming back. The first one, third, The Marked Ones and the Ghost Dimension are stand out ones in the series for me, but I enjoyed all of them (tokyo night not so much).

A lot of people don't like these movies and I can see why. But for me, they're scary. Not a lot of movies scare me, but these one's do. These one's make me paranoid walking through my house at night. And I like the snippets of story you get from each film that slowly builds up a picture of what's going on.

spotmandeux 06-30-2016 05:56 AM

I really liked the second one. The kitchen scene and the stairs scene got me pretty good.

I thought I was the only one who like The Ghost Dimension lol

Lord Voldemort 09-09-2016 07:40 AM

Heh, I never heard of the the Tokyo Night movie (s) until I read this thread?::confused::

I rewatched the first three PAs; they're great the first time you watch them but not as awesome the second time around.

Wanted to say the same. These movies are made just for one time. You can't watch them again, I think. haha.

But I really liked the franchise, I think 3 and 4 are a little bit boring, but 5 was great again. I am really enjoying not knowing what is haunting the protagonist. That scares me the most, it's the same for Blair Witch and Grave Encounters.

LuvablePsycho 05-03-2018 05:09 AM

I thought that The Blair Witch Project was better because they actually managed to convince a lot of people that the movie was real. Paranormal Activity felt kind of silly to me like the fact that the DVD had two endings which ruined the possibility of the movie being real to some people. Also the psychic was completely useless, and I didn't like how cavalier the couple were in the beginning about the idea of a demon living in their house.
