Best movies of 2012

What's the verdict so far?

I'm sticking with:

1. Prometheus
2. The Cabin in the Woods
3. Avengers
4. The Dark Knight Rises

I'm saving spots for The Hobbit and Skyfall, but i'm curious what other people's favorites are so far.

fortunato 10-20-2012 10:46 PM

I had a piss-poor movie watching year. Plus a lot of the movies I wanted to see didn't stick around for very long.

Angra 10-20-2012 10:52 PM

Can't say it has been a fantastic year for me either.

I guess the best so far has been:

The woman in black
Cabin in the woods
Some guy who kills peole

Dara 10-21-2012 12:22 AM

1.Judge Dredd
2.The dark knight rises
3.Prometheus
4.Lawless ....I liked the Avengers too,but im not going to think too hard or ill start swapping around my choices!

missmacabre 10-21-2012 01:16 AM

V/H/S =P
Cabin in the Woods
Antiviral
Looper will be my non-horror choice.

jack_wallen 10-21-2012 05:44 AM

3. Sinister
4. Avengers
5. Lovely Molly

Zero 10-21-2012 05:26 PM

The Master
The Avengers
Cabin in the Woods
Moonrise Kingdom
Dark Knight Rises

nightmare_of _death 10-21-2012 05:29 PM

I had a pathetic year for movies. Only seeing 2 in the theaters and probably wont get to the theater the rest of the year either. I saw The woman in Black and Ted in the theater. I've rented other movies that came out, but don't remember them right now. I haven't seen a lot of the movies already listed yet. :( i'll see them eventually.

Zero 10-21-2012 05:31 PM

While this might attract ridicule, I thought Magic Mike was an incredible film.

The Villain 10-21-2012 06:13 PM

Ill add Argo, The Possession and Savages to those lists

Geddy 10-22-2012 01:42 PM

Loved Cosmopolis, The Dark Knight Rises, and Dredd. Aside from that a pretty lacklustre year. Argo, Moonrise Kingdom, and Cabin in the Woods look quite promising though, so they might make it on the list once (if) I get the chance to see them.

The Lopper 10-22-2012 02:30 PM

The last good movie I saw was back in September of 2011. And that was Chrome Skull: Laid to Rest 2.

Fearonsarms 10-23-2012 09:28 AM

Only really liked The Cabin In The Woods and Prometheus of the ones I've seen so far-hope to see more soon.

roshiq 10-23-2012 10:44 AM

Still there are lots of films left to watch (i.e. TDKR, Killer Joe, Amazing Spider Man etc.)

Wild Bill
Headhunters
Cleanskin
Coriolanus
Get the Gringo

Superman Vs The Elite

Documentary:
Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel

Horror:
Prometheus
The Whisperer in Darkness
Some Guy Who Kills People
Juan of the Dead
Absentia
The Cat (Korean)
The Devil's Business
The Cabin in the Woods
Kalevet
Sennentuntschi: Curse of the Alps
The Tall Man
Livid
Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal
Chained
The Woman in Black
Taped
The Yellow Wallpaper
The Pact
100 Ghost Street: The Return of Richard Speck

MichaelMyers 10-23-2012 10:57 AM

Roshiq, my fellow ex-zombie titan, I must take exception to classifying Prometheus as non-horror: if that is the case, then so is the Aliens franchise, which many horror fans claim as their own.

I thought these were 2011 films? They were awesome anyway.

But we seen them this year, haven't we?:D

TheWickerFan 12-24-2012 02:52 AM

The Cabin In The Woods and Sinister. Two of the best horror movies to come out in quite some time.

ChronoGrl 12-24-2012 12:54 PM

Hmmm... As people have mentioned, this wasn't really a great year for movies... On top of that, I haven't gone out and seen a whole lot.

What I would rank as my Top 5 (in no particular order):
  • Cabin in the Woods
  • Avengers
  • The Woman in Black
  • Some Guy Who Kills People
  • Sleepwalk with Me

Runners Up:
  • Lovely Molly
  • V/H/S

Movies that I haven't seen yet that I think may make the list:
  • The Dark Knight Rises
  • Lawless
  • Looper
  • The Master
  • Argo
  • Tyrannosaur
  • Headhunters
  • The Cat
  • Livid

Sdkdmd 12-24-2012 04:36 PM

1. most definitely "Life of Pi".

I also believe a lot of people would like "Cloud Atlas".

Both very beautiful movies.

crabapple 01-01-2013 01:19 PM

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." I think it's the first modern classic horror fantasy to come out in many years. I think it's as good as "The Wizard of Oz" and "Star Wars," in certain ways, in terms of being a quality story construction of fantasy material.

There are some rough edges that bother me--the scenes could use tweaking with additional dialogue to sharpen the story, and character development, as some have noted, is slim. But it gets the main drama and the visual symbology right, so I would say it gets the big picture right, and delivers less on the small details.

fortunato 01-01-2013 01:38 PM

I didn't see all that much in the theater this year, either. But I'd have to go with:

The Master
Cabin in the Woods

...uh, I guess that's it.

ChronoGrl 02-14-2013 11:08 AM

Dark night rises.
Cabin in the woods.
Hitchcock. No it was awesome shut face.

georgiemetallica 02-15-2013 07:37 AM

The dark knight rises was mine.

Been a huuuuuuuuuge batman fan since I was like 7 and have over 400 comics. Bane has always been my fav villian also. Finally seeing him acted well in a movie was awesome :D

JasonLuck 02-26-2013 02:43 PM

Dark Knight Rises for sure!

Zero 02-27-2013 09:35 AM

I enjoyed Avengers the most - for me the best film was Beasts of the Southern Wild - really stuck with me. Also really affected by The Master.

Cabin was the best horror flick imho.

horrorfangirl66 02-27-2013 10:08 AM

  1. Django Unchained
  2. Cabin in the Woods
  3. The Avengers
  4. Prometheus
  5. The Dark Knight Rises
  6. Lawless
  7. Skyfall

HammerSmashedFace 03-01-2013 12:48 PM

1. Silent Hill Revelation
2. Dark Knight Rises

My favorite 2 of 2012.. I specially was glad the directors of Silent Hill made another movie cuz first one was a killer.. And I'm sure sequel will follow..

ChronoGrl 03-03-2013 04:49 PM

FINALLY watched Sinister. Good, solid horror movie and one of the best horror films of the year.

I liked it for the most part but thought the villain looked a bit stupid like it was out of some bad metal video. Also I'm getting pretty sick of the cheap last scare/jump scenes in stuff recently it just cheapens the film. I think it would've been more effective and dark if it was left as is.

crabapple 03-04-2013 07:22 AM

Yeah, again, I didn't like anything much besides "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter."

I am not knocking "The Avengers" to be mean, because I know a lot of people like it, but, for all its spectacle and its huge production, it came off to me as an empty, flashy show. I loved the huge effects shots, and I laughed at a lot of the jokes, but I didn't feel involved in the story. If you loved it, you came out better than I did.

I agree, and I was really wary about it when I watched the trailers, so I was surprised and how de-emphasized the Villain was - I expected to see lots of Darth Moll like in Insidious. ;)

And I AGREE about the stupid jump scare at the end - It's actually pretty laughable... I think that part of the "Point" is that YOU are the viewer, so YOU'RE NEXT... I mean, COME ON the Clever viewer doesn't need to get hit over the head with that.

...

(but I shamefully admit, I jumped at the cheap scare at the end even though I knew it was coming :o)

Haha I jumped too :p

I thought the similar "jump" at the end of The Pact ruined the film to an extent as well.

It's becoming a bit of a pet hate for me.
