Uh... listen, I hate to burst anyone's bubble but there are two different kinds of Satanism. There is Theistic Satanism and then there is LeVeyan Satanism, this latter kind of Satanist actually doesn't believe in or worship the devil at all but rather worship themselves, their teachings are based on individualism, self-control and "eye for an eye" morality. They use "Satan" as a symbol of carnality and earthly values, of man's inherent nature, and of a cosmos which Satanists perceive to be permeated and motivated by a force that has been given many names by man over the course of time. When you're talking about cults, it is more appropriate to say devil-worshiping cults rather than Satanic cults to alleviate any confusion.

i find it interesting, levayen stanisim is a good way to be,but it shouldnt be refferd to as satanisim though.

I wouldn't say they are hipsters. Hipsters in my book are people who hate ALL mainstream things because they think it's cool to hate them. Satanists consider themselves adversaries of mainstream religious practices and behaviour which they define as "herd conformity", seeing it as stifling to individuality, creativity, and progress. Satanism is really just another religion except they don't believe in God or the devil. Here are some of their ideas:

The Nine Satanic Statements

1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence.
2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams.
3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit.

9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as He has kept it in business all these years.

The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth

1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
3. When in another’s home, show them respect or else do not go there.
4. If a guest in your home annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy.

7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies (something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package and used to brainwash people into accepting something as new and different when really it is not)

Who cares about mainstream religions? Who cares if you think they shouldn't be called satanism? So what, I spouted out some useless info, you don't like it, I don't care.

So basically when im in the Asda shopping and people stop in the middle of the aisles to talk im allowed to destroy them because they are 'bothering' me?(if of course ive asked them to move first..naturally! ~cooool!

I don't think they mean you should actually physically destroy them, I think and don't quote me on this, that they are speaking about verbally destroying them. Tear them down emotionally so they that maybe they will think about what they are doing or saying the next time instead. I've met a few Satanists and they've always been very cool and respectful of most people, they just have little tolerance for the loud-mouthed know-it-alls who think they are the only people who matter.

Most people will move if you ask politely but there's always going to be someone who feels entitled to something that they shouldn't and will act like an ass towards you. Start off polite and if that doesn't work- less tact, more truth.

It doesn't seem like you understand my statement. Nor Bob Gray's. I think further explanations and discussions will go over your head as well so I don't really so a point in continuing this.

I actually met a girl once in a pub who was wearing a satan-depicting t-shirt with something like Hail Satan on it so I asked her if she was a satanist-to my horror she replied and I quote "No I'm only wearing it to get attention".......I got into trouble by telling her she should be taken outside and shot so she started bitching about me to the rest of the pub and I was made out to be the villain of the exchange!

fair enough,she can do and wear what she wants to get attention ,its just as offending to some people as a "jesus saves" t shirt,no need to go tell her to outside to get shot..shheeesh!

Understand something, I am not a Satanist in any way, I am more along the lines of an atheist. Before you say that atheism is a religion too I will save you from that mistake. Atheism, which is about not believing in god(s), and theism, which is about believing in god(s), are philosophical or theological points of view, but they are not religions.

Also making it clear that I am not a Satanist either. Just an Atheist.

I work in a Church Of England school.Maybe I should get one?? !!They think im a pagan(so therefore worship the devil in their eyes ) as I paint massive murals and have pink hair.(Thats how they can spot you!)~I get put in the art cupboard when The Church governors come to look round! hahah

I don't see how they could be using the wrong name, Satan just means "the opposer" (which can also be a human) and that is what they do, oppose the belief in supernatural beings. It's not a sect in the fact that it isn't breaking off from another religion or belief system. I do think it is an interesting belief system.

It is from the Hebrew Bible but it is not the name of an angel, it is a title that means "the opposer or the adversary", so Satanists are correct in using that term in describing themselves. They oppose or are the adversaries of the beliefs of those who worship and believe in a divine being.

Well, all I can tell you is that you'd be wrong in calling them a sect. They didn't break off from another religion, it just changed its name from The Order of the Trapezoid to the Church of Satan, therefore they can't be a sect. As far as the membership goes, yes there are what is called active members who pay money to it, there are also registered members who do not pay nor are there any requirements to achieve this position. I do agree with you that they are a religion which is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values. LaVeyan Satanism does not involve the literal worship of any being other than the self, so you'd be wrong in saying that they worship the satan.

They didn't break off from Theistic Satanism at, they draw influences from the rituals and ceremonies of occultist Aleister Crowley and the philosophies of Friedrich Nietzsche and Ayn Rand. Your point about them worshiping "satan" is invalid in that "satan" isn't the name of the being but is instead a title and that is how they are using it. There are many religions that use similar philosophies and beliefs but are obviously separate from one another. I haven't checked lately but only the active members use to have to pay, I see that has changed.

I worded that wrong, I didn't mean that you were saying they worshiped satan, I was saying that just because they don't worship the devil doesn't mean that they can't use the term satanism because "satan" isn't the name of an entity, just a title that means "opposer". It is completely reasonable for them to call themselves satanists which just means "opposers of belief in the divine". They are also different from atheists in that they have set beliefs, guidelines, and practice magic. Atheists do none of those things.

You have the right to not like them for whatever reason you deem fit, I'm just keeping the facts straight.

Practicing magic and believing in a supernatural being are two different things.

Magic is paranormal, not supernatural, paranormal means phenomena understood to be outside of science's current ability to explain or measure. Supernatural means pertaining to, or being above or beyond what is natural or attributed to God or a deity. LeVeyan Satanists practice two broadly distinguished kinds of magic: Lesser Magic which is a system of manipulation that incorporates one or more of three main psychological themes: sex, sentiment, and wonder. Greater Magic involves ritual and ceremony in order to focus one's emotional energy for a specific purpose.

I'm done arguing now, you don't like LaVeyan Satanists, I'm neutral towards them, end of story.
