Best real life serial killers life made into a film..
Ive been having a think and theres a few really good films based on real life serial killers.
My personal fave is The Gray Man,the story of Albert Fish. Its not overly gory etc but is simply well acted~Patrick Bauchau(he was also in Carnivale etc) is wonderful as our leading man. Whats your favourite?? |

I'm not really a huge of real serial killer movies cos they have to be toned down out of respect for the victims friends and families-but off the top of my head I'll go with Deranged (based on Ed Gein). |

Deranged is a must watch. Excellent movie.
Ones I like: Jack the Ripper (the Michael Kane film) Tenderness of the Wolves 10 Rillington Place M Henry Protrait of a Serial Killer The Honeymoon Killers See No Evil: The Moors Murders |
Agree with Ferox on 10 Rillington Place, Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer and M.
The Boston Strangler. |
Can't recommend Deranged enough. Brilliant stuff along with Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer. The Wiz made a good call with Snowtown too a must see if you like your gritty character driven flicks.
Not a serial killer of course but Jim Van Bebber's The Manson Family is fucking top notch shit. |
My faves would be:
Deranged Henry Ted Bundy (the Mathew bright version) 10 Rillington Place To Catch a Killer Jack the Ripper (with Michael Caine) Memories of Murder The Chaser |

Out of the Blue. Spree killer, not serial killer, but excellent film nonetheless. It's about David Gray and the Aramoana Massacre.
Looking forward to Snow Town. I haven't seen many of these; not really a sub-genre I've explored. Thanks for the recs. |

must watch "deranged" this weekend |
There is probably no better "real" serial killer movie than Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer...
Also, Citizen X is a very good movie, superb, I'd say...about Andrei Chikatilo. The hooker stabbing scene in the woods is awesome. Confessions of a Serial Killer is really good too...it's based on Henry Lee Lucas and Otis Toole, however, the characters have different names in the movie. Really creepy moment when the woman lets them in to repair whatever...and minutes later, finds fat-boy Moon (Otis) at her vanity putting on her make-up in a very smiley, creepy manner. What else? Deranged was excellent...great 70's movie...saw it as a kid and remember it to this day...especially the bear-trap scene. Haven't seen Snowtown, but it's in my Netflix queue. I saw one Dahmer movie where he puts a live dude into an industrial barrel full of acid...don't know the name of the flick, though... Lots of good movie mentions... Nice thread. |
The pphantom-the town that dreaded sundown. really good film

Would just like to again say how awesome Snow town is. Since it's also currently on Netflix Instant (Damn it! I paid to have it imported) think it's one that people should definitely seek out. Not quite horror, more so a darker drama with horror type elements. Well acted though, good story of course based off of unfortunate real life events. I was surprised how good the movie was, I went in expecting to be disgusted because of the hype it was getting ("It's so disturbing...yada yada yada" ). Definitely a pleasant surprise.

Its a great film except for the inappropriate humour in it. From Wiki: It is based on a series of actual murders attributed to a man dubbed locally as the Phantom Killer, who murdered five people between February and May 1946. The murders occurred in and around the city of Texarkana, which is on the border between Texas and Arkansas. As such, there is both a city of Texarkana, TX and a city of Texarkana, AR. Most of the murders occurred in rural areas near both sides of the Texarkana area and also in rural areas of Bowie County, TX and Miller County, AR. The Phantom Killer was never identified by law enforcement and therefore never apprehended. |

I'm diggin' the site. Although it is centered more on the investigation and the attempted apprehension and not focused on the violent nature of the crimes, I really enjoyed "Zodiac" (2007). If I were to suggest something a little more brutal I would recommend "Henry: Protrait of a serial killer." There are a few movie mentioned in this thread that I have not seen, I plan to change that soon.
