Tell me about it! If someone sneezes in a film then "oh, it's a health hazard, maybe in the interests of public safety we should ban it".

They can't be doing a particularlly great job when as i in the post i have seen a few of them (Uncut versions)

Maybe it's an age thing?
I saw most of them when i was perhaps a little too young to understand what all the fuss was about (12 or 13). When VHS first came out, we were one of the first in our street to get a VCR and rented 2 or 3 films a night. Just happened that some of films we got happened to be the banned ones. I think most of them are available if you know where to look (mostly heavily cut); I've still got the original "The Burning" (Uncut Version) including the infamous cutting the fingers off scene with the garden shears, lovely!

doctor satan 10-11-2006 11:59 AM

Growing up in the age of the tyranny that was the Video Nasties debate & having seen or owned the majority of films on the BBFC register, you can't really call this thread "the Return..." Your not likely to likely to see these type of films again not while those soulless bastards in Hollywood keep pumping out safe pg13 horror.
The true Nasties had lashings of gratuitous sex & violence & not forgetting needless animal cruelty the staple diet of the Italian gutmunchers.
i'm getting all emotional here......happy days!

The ones I have seen.... A couple more for the list (as far as I am aware):

Mother's Day: a bunch of interbred hill billies rape and murder women (hey I can call them that as the family admit to having sex with each other during the film, hence interbred).

Don't Torture a Duckling: has had an American release, but still waiting in the UK.

Video Nasties

A list of several good o'l nasties. Any recomendations from this list? Many of the movies sounds good but i doubt they all are...

scarecrow666 07-18-2007 06:35 AM

If you can get ALL of them UNCUT and cheep ,then go for all of them. But it depends on what you want out of it . My 2 cents anyway.

alkytrio666 07-18-2007 06:39 AM

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you want a real video nasty, watch Nekromantik.

Even the mention of it makes my dick shrivel.

Davids 07-18-2007 09:46 AM

hehe...i remember i saw Necromantik 6-7 years ago. Promised my self i'd never watch it again, but i think i wanna watch it again just to see if it was as nasty as i remeber..

Haha, good sport.

But David, I'll warn you...it is as nasty as you remember!

Another one that was brought up recently here is Hei tai yang 731, known elsewhere as Men Behind the Sun. It'll knot you up. Give it a go if you're really looking for nasty.

I cant watch video nasties based on true events - atrocities dont do it for me!
Fantasy is far more entertaining IMO.

Some of these movies are available locally (eg Last House on the Left, Zombie Holocaust, Cannibal Ferox, Cannibal Holocaust, I Spit on Your Grave, Tenebrae, Zombie Flesh Eaters, Snuff, Flesh For Frankenstein, The Beyond, Blood Feast, Evil Dead, Driller Killer, etc). Amazon will satisfy your craving for many others.

The right column of the article has links to many of them at either the Amazon US or UK site.

Not sure if any are still banned in Australia, but some definitely were (eg Cannibal Holocaust until last year...)

Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide

It was an era that remains notorious to this day and gave Sam Raimi some widespread publicity when he was just a young kid making goofy horror films in the backwoods of Michigan.

Now the Video Nasty era is subject of a new collection and documentary. Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide directed by Jake West and Marc Morris, which is released by Nucleus Films on 1st November.

The film-makers cut together 72 horror films that were successfully prosecuted for corrupting the nation. The folks over at FilmShaft have seen it and they can firmly say it’s a brilliant and intelligent montage of not particularly brilliant and intelligent cinema. But there in lies the mystery and repulsion.

If you want the version longue there’s a four hour cut featuring intros from leading horror critics like the ace Kim Newman and Alan Jones. Also on the extra features is a feature-length documentary VIDEO NASTIES: MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP & VIDEOTAPE. So if you know your SS Experiment Camp from your Driller Killer, you’ll be in gorehound heaven.

Jake West, director of the documentary and co-owner of Nucleus Films, says:

Quote:

“The Video Nasties era was the most shameful time in British film history that lead to the Video Recordings Act being enforced under false information. People went to prison and lost their livelihoods because of what happened and that, unfortunately, still has a bearing on what is going on today. Hopefully, what Marc (Morris) and I have served up is a pleasurable but timely reminder that we need to be aware of the kind of rhetoric being used around issues of censorship”.
Check out the trailer and repeat to yourself: it’s only a video montage, it’s only a video montage, it’s only… you get the idea...

Looks like fun.:)

Ferox13 10-11-2010 11:27 PM

I love this piece of history - it was very much part of my youth...I did my college dissertation on this and the 90's witch hunt being used to fuel Media moral Panics...

Must get this - I love Kim Newman..

ManchestrMorgue 10-12-2010 04:49 AM

Thanks for the heads-up on this one, ___V___.

Looks like it would be an interesting viewing. I have been interested in the "video nasties" history, probably because Australia still struggles with a fairly draconian censorship.

It would be interesting to get an insight into some of the "video nasty" films that I haven't managed to see yet.

Exploitation and Video Nasties

Hey guys, I was just wondering what some of your favourite exploitation and video nasties were.

Some of my favourites are:
House on the Edge of the Park
Cannibal Holocaust
The Toolbox Murders (original)
Zombie Holocaust
The Driller Killer

The list continues, but I'll post more as the thread goes on. :)

ZombieDrone 11-09-2011 09:08 AM

....hmmmm...on the Nasties list...

Can't go wrong with Blood Feast. Pure schlocky exploitation at it's best. Only offensive to people who can't contextualise violence and approaches to violence.

The Beyond and it's sister, House By The Cemetery (still a complete mystery, other than probable inconsistansy on a large scale, why City Of The Living Dead wasn't a nasty if the other two films in Fulci's "trilogy" are...)

Zombie Flesh Eaters (Zombi 2) Zombie Vs. Shark, afterall...

Tenebre, a brilliant Giallo film.

And of course, who doesn't love The Evil Dead.

Planning on getting Inferno soon. I saw a copy of Posession on the shelves of HMV today. Broke my heart that I didn't have the cash to buy it as it's probably quite difficult to find as a DVD on a shop shelf. Ah well, I'll probably buy it soon...

Thecryptkeeper 11-09-2011 10:27 AM

Love all of those movies. Out of the three Fulci films I'd have to go with The Beyond as my favourite, it has a very ominous atmosphere and the end scene just does it for me. While I enjoyed both City of the Living Dead and House by the Cemetery, I found the stories a little more difficult to follow.

Zombi and The Evil Dead are both classics and are some of my favourite movies.

I haven't heard of Possession.

Although not exactly a Video Nasty, I really enjoy Blue Sunshine, a film that shows what could happen when experimenting with LSD. Very creepy and recommended.

Possession was on the Video Nasties list and it's one of the more bizarre titles in more ways than one.

First of all, it's very odd. It's an art film, basically, and it relies on surrealism.

That it is an art film is also makes it an odd inclusion on the list. Admittedly not all of Nasties were completely horror films (though pretty much all of them floated around horror somewhere, Posession included.) but it's also, arguably the most "prestigious" film on the list. It starred a high-calibre cast in Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani who, I believe, even won an award at Cannes for her work on the film (although, of course, both worked in horror films, especially around this period) and had a very revered director in Andzrej Zulawski.

It also featured the work of special effects artist, Carlo Rambaldi who was working on E.T around the same time. Although Rambaldi worked on his share of horror films, including fellow Nasty, Bay Of Blood.

TheWickerFan 11-09-2011 11:36 AM

Ilsa She Wolf Of The SS
Salo The 120 Days Of Sodom
The Devils
(not video nasties, just exploitation)

Incredibly, Dead And Buried was a video nasty. That was a criminally underrated film.

I'll second Possession, Tenebre, and Evil Dead.

fortunato 11-09-2011 02:16 PM

Yeah, big-time rec on Possession. It's a brilliant mess of a film.
I hear-tell that it's going to be re-released on DVD at some point in the near future.

I curse myself for not picking up Salo when I had the chance. Also been meaning to check The Devils.

Dead and Buried is great and very underrated indeed! But apparently Stan Winston's effects are too realistic for the BBFC.

Another great Nasty was Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, also very underrated.

Huge rec for The Devils along with Possession, although I certainly wouldn't call either one exploitation.

True, but I mentioned Posession because it's a Video Nasty.

Thecryptkeeper 11-10-2011 11:15 AM

Have you guys seen any Nazisploitation at all?

Q... 11-10-2011 12:21 PM

How about Sweet Movie and Pink Flamingos? I'm not entirely sure what is considered exploitation, as there are so many variations of it, but I'm sure those fit in somewhere.

There is also an excellent documentary called Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist which Wiki lists as exploitation (or, more specifically, shocksploitation). I was surprised to see it listed there actually - yes, it's entirely shocking, but it is also real - it doesn't just look real. But anyway, it's great, so I recommend it.
