I'm always on the lookout for great documentaries on horror. I have:
Going To Pieces: The Rise And Fall Of The Slasher Film Dario Argento: An Eye For Horror Boogeymen: The Killer Compilation I really want: 100 Years Of Horror - the complete set Terror In The Aisles Boogeymen 2: Masters Of Horror What other great horror documentaries are out there? Also, besides the Bravo and Channel 4 horror countdowns, do you know of any other horror countdowns that are worth watching? |
Terror In The Aisles is pretty bad - I have a VHS of it somewhere.
VIDEO NASTIES: MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP AND VIDEOTAPE thats on the Video nasty DVD is great. Long Live the New Flesh about Cronenberg. Not Quite Hollywood is amazing (more exploitation but some horror in it). Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Portrait American Nightmare The Studio that Dripped Blood (great Hammer doc). What are the Ban The Sadist Videos dcoumentaries like? (who's involved, what clips of films are there, how much is about the history of the Nasties phenomenon etc.)
I'm interested in possibly having a look. |
I only have IFC's The American Nightmare on DVD and already downloaded the following ones but haven't seen them yet:o

I picked up Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide, so I watched all 72 trailers for the video nasties as well as the doc. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.:D |
Not Quite Hollywood is very good and it's also streaming on Netflix.
|
I really liked S&Man (2006) and Cropsey (2009).
Haven't seen a lot of those mentioned - Thanks for the recs! Also - not necessarily horror-related, but more of a mystery/cryptozoology feel, I have to recommend Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles (2011) - Utterly fascinating. |

Saw a great documentary called American Grindhouse about the history of American exploitation films. It's interesting to see that exploitation has been around since the invention of film itself. |

Yes, great documentary. |
Saw one recently on BBC4 called Dear Censor about the censors we've had in the UK over they years and how the BBFC has changed. It was based on archives recently released to the public.

There's also a very analytical doc called The Perverts Guide to Cinema. I only made it about a quarter of the way through though. Am sure it's very clever and interesting if you can understand the guy properly, but it all went over my head (and also his accent is a little difficult to follow sometimes!). Still, some well-made scenes, and Slavoj Zizek is certainly very passionate in his analysis. I do also have Midnight Movies: From the Margin to Mainstream which I am about to watch thanks to being reminded of it by this thread! |
I watched a decent one on halloween morning called Zombiemania. If you are a Romero fan you will dig it, the whole doc is like one big George A Romero ass kiss, lol!

Yeah, it is quite profound, especially considering it in the context of other "witch hunt" manias throughout history. |
I'm glad the horror channel didn't put that bit in and it was on the dvd-I don't mind what they do but putting things in movies that shouldn't be there would be going too far. Yes the similarities between the many witchunt phases in history is striking. Also I loved how it showed you that authorities were trying to control what we see in the UK-so very true even today.
