American Horror Story

http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/ahs/

New horror show on FX. Premieres Oct. 5th.
I've read a lot of really interesting reviews for this one, ex. "It aspires to be "The Shining"-meets-"Rosemary's Baby," with "Carrie" and "Don't Look Now" tossed in. But more than a dead-on horror show, it's a homage to cinematic spookery. And a good one." - ABC News
It's by the makers of Nip/Tuck and Glee, neither of which do anything for me personally, but I'm pretty keen to check this one out.

neverending 09-30-2011 07:09 PM

Yah, I'll be checking this out too.

TheWickerFan 10-01-2011 02:50 AM

Me too.........

The Villain 10-01-2011 05:46 AM

Yeah that looks good. I'm gonna check it out.

ChronoGrl 10-01-2011 07:28 AM

Already have the DVR set up - Looking forward to it - Hope it's good

hueyisme 10-01-2011 04:24 PM

That sounds like a good one. I just bought a set of DVD's of Alcoa Presents One Step Beyond, a popular show in the 60's. They were supposedly true supernatural experiences. Some of them were pretty eerie.

What do you guys think of it so far?

MichaelMyers 10-05-2011 08:59 AM

Reminder: Premiere airs tonight at 10 EST.

hammerfan 10-05-2011 09:00 AM

I'm really looking forward to this! I hope it doesn't disappoint.

MichaelMyers 10-05-2011 07:03 PM

What did everyone think???

fortunato 10-05-2011 07:40 PM

Well, it's absurd, disjointed, and I can't imagine that they'll be able to keep up the pace while juggling what is a staggering amount of genre commitments.

But I really enjoyed it. It was nice to kind of shut off and go along for the ride. It doesn't seem like they have any idea what they're going to do with this show, or where they're going to take it, but oh well. It's completely batshit insane, and I find a real delight in their dedication to that.

I thought it was totally loony and ridiculous, but had engaging imagination. The horror tropes were certainly trounced all over, but I liked that, too.
We'll have to see if it lasts, even though I really can't imagine it will. But here's to hoping.

neverending 10-05-2011 09:04 PM

I had to work.

I hope it will be On Demand.

fortunato 10-05-2011 09:40 PM

Yeah, I'm interested to hear what everyone else thought. Boiled down, I guess my thoughts are: intellectually, I realize it's a huge mess, but I enjoyed it even still.

hammerfan 10-06-2011 03:45 AM

I'm still mulling it over. I'm not sure how I feel about it. You are correct, fortunato, in that it was absurd and disjointed. It probably didn't help that I was tired and my brain wasn't functioning very well. I'll give it another try. Frankly, with all the profanity and sexual situations, I'll be surprised if the so-called "moral majority" will allow it to stay on the air.

newb 10-06-2011 06:24 AM

damn-it....forget all about it...will watch On-Demand

Yeah, definitely. I wouldn't be surprised if this one doesn't make it to a second season.

I feel like this show will appeal to serious horror fans that can appreciate horror for a series of good scenes and not so much story or characters, cause I'm not sure we'll have much coherence with respect to either in American Horror Story.

neverending 10-06-2011 10:27 AM

To be honest, even though I haven't seen it yet, and what they've done might be really great, I'm a bit disappointed, because I was hoping for a good straight forward horror anthology series.

Yeah, that would have been awesome.

from what I've been reading I have to agree with you. This sounds more like David Lynch on speed. But I'm still gonna give it a chance.

TheWickerFan 10-06-2011 03:09 PM

It's definitely out there; kind of like Lars Von Trier's The Kingdom. I'll be watching more.

Jessica Lange is great in this.:)

newb 10-08-2011 07:37 PM

watched it On Demand the other night.....not as disjointed as I thought it might be.

I usually give a new show I think I might like 3 episodes......so I will also with this one.

first thoughts were......not bad...some freaky shit here and there.....although not any likable characters as of yet...that could be a killer for me.

Yeah, I think that might be an issue with this show. But like you said, it'll be best to just watch this and see how it develops. Or if it develops.

neverending 10-08-2011 11:13 PM

I dunno... I think I must have been watching something different than everyone else, cuz I had no problem following the storylines. It's the premiere- they're setting everything up, and I think they did a good job of it. I'm looking forward to seeing how all the different elements connect to each other.

And Wicker is right- Jessica Lange was great.

I had only one quibble. In the opening sequence, which, according to the title card, was set in 1978, when the boy finds the dead rat he says "Awesome!" I'm sorry- we didn't talk like that back then.

Haha, that's a good catch.

To me, it wasn't an issue of following the storylines, it's just that with the sheer number of them, coupled with the fact that they cover such an insanely wide spectrum of horror tropes, it's just hard for me to see how they can possibly keep it all under control. But I really did enjoy it, and look forward to seeing how (or if) they are able to manage the crazy amount of plot setups they included in the premiere.

neverending 10-09-2011 08:40 AM

They won't keep up the pace, nor do I think they intend to. I believe what they will do hereonin is focus more on 2 or 3 of the plotlines each week and give the others a few minutes of development. I think in the opener they were throwing everything out there to get the ball rolling and hook in as many people as possible. Whether that was a wise strategy or not is debatable.

Yeah, I think that's how they'll have to continue from here. I did read one review, though, of the second episode and they said it doesn't slow down at all.

Will be interested to see who really inseminated Dylan McDermott's wife! My money is on the guy's patient!

I agree with all of this. I loved it. Well, if it makes any sense, I love the idea of it - the idea of a twisted little horror show making waves - I feel as though it was meant for ME the horror viewer... Whether I'll come to love the show, I'll have to see. I enjoyed the Pilot. It wasn't perfect, but certainly enough to make me want to keep watching. It's rare that I've seen a breath-taking Pilot.

It wasn't perfect - some of the editing was a little disjointed and frenetic - But it certainly didn't lose me. I held on to every moment - Every silly beautiful over-the-top trope. It was delightfully absurd (though, to be honest, part of me wish it pushed the envelop a little farther - maybe make the sex scenes slightly longer to make the audience squirm more... Then again the average viewer probably IS squirming and I'm... Just... Jaded).

Regardless, I can't wait for the next episode... And MAN Jessica Lange was utterly brilliant.

The Villain 10-10-2011 06:19 PM

I still have to watch this. I'm behind on all my shows.

Same here.

I found it online on the FX site earlier so I may try to make it so later tonight.

Elvis_Christ 10-10-2011 08:53 PM

Really enjoyed the first episode and can't wait to see how it all unfolds. It's got lots of potential anyways.

I think the gimp dude is another ghost all together.

neverending 10-12-2011 10:20 PM

I'm not going to say anything very specific, other than to say I thought it was great. I think the story is progressing very well, and Jessica Lange is stealing this show.

fortunato 10-12-2011 10:43 PM

Yeah, I really enjoyed tonight's episode as well. This show is just crazy and super-entertaining.

ChronoGrl 10-13-2011 06:59 PM

I found this week's episode to be genuinely unsettling. It's going to be hard to wait another week for the next one.

Thoroughly enjoying it.

Thoughts on Wednesday's episode? Man, this show is such a mess, but I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

hammerfan 10-21-2011 05:57 PM

I missed it, gotta catch up

neverending 10-21-2011 06:52 PM

I missed it as well, and it's not available on demand yet!
