The Three Mothers
I think most of us has seen Dario Argento's "three mothers" trilogy of films. As they are very different I'm curious as to which people here like the most. I mean the mother not the film. For the record I know Argento took inspiration from Thomas De Quincey's book but I haven't read it-if anyone has please let me know. Anyway who do you choose:-
Mother Of Sighs (from Suspiria 1977) Mother Of Darkness (from Inferno 1980) Mother Of Tears (The Third Mother 2007) |
Mater Tenebrarum seemed to have the most personality.

I've never seen any of the 3.:o

I really think the story surrounding Mater Suspiriorum was the coolest though. She's not all that interesting if you just watch Suspiria, but after finishing the trilogy you find out why she was so weak, and it makes the ending of Suspiria so much more awesome. |

Yeah I was thinking in terms of character, personality and presence. So for me I voted for Mater Tenebrarum-to me she is the one that leaves the best impression on the viewer. She has the most mystique and throws open all sorts of other questions-like what were the phases that she threatened to take Mark through in Inferno? She is also the most sinister as being an embodiment of death. I think you can watch all three films and still learn so much from them with repeated viewings as already pointed out there was more to Mater Suspiriorum than at first seemed. I also think the Three Mothers Trilogy touches on the subject of metaphysics quite beautifully which is an integral reality to many myths and legends.

I attempted 1 time(the odd coloring turned me off). I have a very hard time watching movies pre-1980(black and white totally turns me off). I haven't seen many "classics". Yes, I realize this makes me sound like a fool but its how I roll. |

How? The classics are the good ones! The new are just.. "die teens" |
Mother Of Sighs is my favorite. I just love the scenes in Susperia where she is on screen.
|
I notice no one has voted "Mother Of Tears" as their favourite-I understand that I was a little disappointed by her myself.

I am one of the selected few who prefer Inferno over Suspiria. As good as Suspiria is, Inferno is a notch better in terms of plot, acting, atmosphere and cinematography IMO. Can't beat Suspiria's Goblin score though. |

The pic earlier was the second Mother in the form of a music student spying on our hero (presumably). The actress is Ania Pieroni. |

I'm also in the minority in prefering Inferno to Suspiria for me it was the complexity of Mater Tenebrarum who swung it for me. I was the same as wickerfan in that I thought the younger actress was Mother Of Tears making a cameo in Inferno. It's good to know she instead adds further depth to Mater Tenebrarum.

I attempted to watch mother of tears a while ago, but the copy I had was crap... hmm, might see if I can rent it tomorrow, good video store over the road, then I can vote, hooray!
|
I also bizarrely saw a crap copy of Mother Of Tears last year-I don't think the film is as bad as some people make out. I think it was just the character of Mother Of Tears that got people so riled as she was very disappointing compared to the other two. However as a film I think it is the most controversial and ultraviolent of the three.

I'll check it out if I can, they should have it, hopefully, otherwise I have a huge back catalogue of movies I have bought recently which I have been meaning to watch from the 70's grindhouse era... plenty of violence and gore for the spare hours of the weekend none the less.
