Top 'Town With A Secret' Horror Stories

Love those creepy small towns where all is not what it seems. Some of my favorites:

Dark Secret Of Harvest Home - Cornwall Coombe
Children Of The Corn - Gatlin, Nebraska
You Know They Got A Hell Of A Band - Rock N Roll Heaven
The Stepford Wives - Stepford, Connecticut
The Lottery

There must be loads I'm forgetting. What other creepy small towns with a deep dark secret are worth visiting?

endo 07-28-2010 09:26 AM

Salem's Lot is a good one. Rainy Season and One For The Road are two other good stories by King about two towns with pretty sinister secrets as well.

RainbowEyes84 07-28-2010 09:28 AM

The DevonsVille Terror (1983)

Burned at the Stake (1982)

Satan's Slave (1976)

Of course:http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/9220/sl8og1.jpg

I'd love to see Rainy Season and One For The Road made into films.

RainbowEyes84 07-28-2010 09:45 AM

I can't forget Demons of Ludlow 1984!

So would I. Another good one is Crouch End. They actually aired that in the mini series a few years back Nightmares And Dreamscapes on TNT. The whole mini series was done pretty well I thought.

Satan's Slave (1976)

Those pesky cults and covens.

I see Burned At The Stake takes place in Salem, Mass., a fun loving town.http://home.texoma.net/~adwignall/images/salem.jpg

Satan's Slave gave me a picture for Eye and Tooth removals.

TheWickerFan 07-28-2010 09:56 AM

Crouch End is a wonderful story!

Wow Rainbow, you sure know your 80s horror! I don't think I've seen any of those films you mentioned.

I see Demons Of Ludlow was directed by Bill Rebane, director of the classic Giant Spider Invasion.http://thumbnails.hulu.com/18/728/88...NgYB+eEVgg.jpg

neverending 07-28-2010 10:31 AM

2000 Maniacs anyone?

roshiq 07-28-2010 11:26 AM

If there isn't a separate thread for "Top Island with A Secret" then I like to recommend The Wicker Man (1973).

RainbowEyes84 07-28-2010 01:17 PM

There's only one Bill Rebane. One Very underrated director!

I love The Great Spider Invasion BTW!

RainbowEyes84 07-28-2010 06:58 PM

The Dark Secret of Harvest Home is hard- to- find on DVD. I don't think it's on DVD yet! Is it?

The VHS will do, I always thought David Ackroyd was hot!

Hallowed Ground, In the Mouth of Madness and The Village are some movies that come to mind. Lovecraft loved creepy towns almost as much as Stephen King. I like The Shadow over Innsmouth. And I remember a Goosebumps story from when I was young called the Welcome to the Dead House that fits this category.

RainbowEyes84 07-28-2010 09:26 PM

I think I may have gotten one film mixed up with your category. I just realized Satan's Slave isn't a small town with a secret. The secluded English-side manor and story there is more so a "family with a secret". In that case, you and I should start a category together. LOL

Here's one I so love,

the damn commericial has to go, but you get the full movie here:

Killer piece of horror. This one sits at the top of the pile with Alone in the Dark as some underrated US horror cinema.

Needs to be a 'Town With A Secret'.

sonofspam 09-29-2010 10:09 AM

martyrs, calvaire

Has anyone seen calvaire-its more of an art house horror flick and dark comedy-but it definitely has a dark secret. If you havent seen it then I suggest you do. Also martyrs has a deep secret--I don't know if it qualifies but its a great movie

Killer_Pulp 09-29-2010 11:30 AM

How about Silent Hill? That was pretty good.

TheWickerFan 09-29-2010 11:35 AM

I'll take Silent Hill and Calvaire.http://www.eatmybrains.com/images/news/calvaire_07.jpghttp://api.ning.com/files/OjFOux2Sv-...lent_hill1.jpg

I miss excellent threads like this.:(

swiss tony 04-18-2011 08:01 AM

The Fog (original one, not the shitty remake)

Blair Witch Project

Good shout with The Wicker Man. It's clearly the best of this sub genre.

The Village is another good one!

The Lost Boys?

Fearonsarms 04-19-2011 04:56 PM

Great shout out for Calvaire-also Dagon, Cthulhu (2007) and In The Mouth Of Madness. Should also include City Of The Living Dead and City Of The Dead

Diabolical 04-19-2011 05:47 PM

i dont really understand this topic. would sleepy hollow count?

slysje 04-21-2011 07:12 AM

IT

best movie ever anyway:p

BookZombie 04-21-2011 11:12 PM

Here are my favorites:

Salem's lot in it's various incarnations are a favorite of mine.
Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat is a fun little movie.
The Bothersome Man is a very spooky town with a secret movie.
Sleepy Hollow (The one with Christina Ricci is my favorite.) I love this movie.
Stepford Wives both the original and the remake, though the original is much, much spookier.
Wolfhound, great little shapeshifter flick.
The Wicker Man both the original and the remake, though the original have more style.
The Island, great science fiction movie and while it is a facility they are at it is run as a town.
Vampire’s Night Orgy, a great little movie about an abandoned town that proves to be full of vampires.
Population 46, I loved it up until the ending, though that was disappointing.

TheWickerFan 04-22-2011 01:56 AM

The Island is an unofficial remake of a film called Parts The Clonus Horror which I think you might enjoy. It's cheesy, but fun. I still think there is a really good film to be made about this story.

Thank you for the information. The Clonus Horror have been on my wishlist for a while and I am planning on picking it up. I think I will like it very well. I am also curious about how Never Let Me Go is, I got that cheap on blu ray so am waiting for it to arrive.

hueyisme 04-22-2011 07:04 AM

New version of Wickerman, the one with Nicholas Cage.

BookZombie 04-22-2011 10:44 AM

I like the remake of the Wickerman, I enjoyed watching it, however I know allot of fans of the original was not to pleased with it. I however think it was fine.

The Demons of Ludlow is a horrible town with a secret movie, but it is sort of fun to. I just thought I mention it.
