Best 80's slashers

I was wondering if there was a list of classic 80's slashers. Would like to know what ones people liked.
Just a small list to start it.
1. Friday the 13th
2. Mothers Day
3. Halloween
4. Nightmare on Elm St
5. Happy B-day to me
6. Mad man
7. The Prowler

A nightmare on Elm Street is my favourite 80's slasher flick. In fact for years it was my favourite movie, horror or otherwise.

Wensday13 05-24-2007 05:11 AM

My favorite movie of all time is Halloween. Although if Im not mistaken it came out in 78 or 79.
I really liked Trick or Treat to. The Wraith and Fright Night were pretty good 80s movies. Neither was really a slasher movie though.

toXsick 05-24-2007 07:09 AM

Fright Night really holds up. And not to knock the thread even further off-course, but Horror in the 80's can pretty much be summed up for me with Return of the Living Dead. John Russo was a genius.

Mictlantechutli 05-24-2007 10:57 AM

I always liked April Fool's Day and Sleepaway Camp

I have always like April Fool's Day as well. Saw Sleepaway Camp for the first time last year, its goofy fun. Though I will say, I avoided the twist for years, only to be spoiled by the back cover when I finally got a copy....

A Nightmare On Elm Street of course. Halloween WAS released in the late seventies though. Trick or Treat is one of my favorites, so is My Bloody Valentine. Night of the Demons is pretty entertaining. I have also always been pretty partial to Terror Train, its fun.

There's also The Burning, which I have never seen, because I can't seem to find it.

zombies slash people with their teeth.

ferretchucker 05-27-2007 05:07 AM

is halloween 1 really a slasher? It's my favourite horror of all time but can it be called a slasher considering the only blood shown is on lauries arm when it gets scraped?

Wensday13 05-27-2007 09:33 PM

Personally, Ive always thought of Halloween as the father of slasher movies.

Kinda like how alot of people consider Led Zepplin the fathers of heavy metal even though they didnt play it, they inspired 99% of the later bands that did.

the_real_linda 05-28-2007 03:39 PM

Halloween..............a classic......the classic

he has you on a technicality there ferret. dunno if this counts but, 90% of argento's body of work. here's a good question, what's the difference between slasher and giallo? that might make a good thread.

Okay, let's see........a giallo film is usually more of a mystery film than a slasher film. it contains the violence, blood, and nudity of a slasher film but it is very much whodunit? There is almost always the focus on the gloved hand, holding a weapon, and you are supposed to try to fit the pieces together; slasher films you either know who the murderer is, or it doesn't seem to matter who the murderer is.......;) I didn't think to add any here when I was listing favorite slasher films, but I do think they aren't all that different as far as content. People do get slashed (to borrow The Mothman's line).....:p

swiss tony 06-04-2007 11:43 AM

so giallo is more columbo and slasher is just 'heres the bad guy, watch him kill these people'

Prom Night is dreadfully boring....or is that just me? ;)
Oh well, my point was, not that slashers never have an element of mystery, just that a slasher film doesn't always have that element, unlike a giallo film (at least in the ones I have seen). In slasher films, it seems like any mystery involved is usually secondary to the death scenes, the violence. The question for me is often "who is going to die next?" with most slasher films, rather than "who is behind the mask?".

Torso - Sergio Martino

Terror at the Opera & Sleepless- Dairo Argento

The New York Ripper- Lucio Fulci

Death Walks on High Heels & Death Walks at Midnight- Luciano Ercoli

I would recommend these films to any slasher fan!

It's the last true slasher in the Friday the 13th franchise.

The Mothman 06-05-2007 09:39 PM

Bay of Blood
(AKA Twitch of the Death Nerve)
A beautiful slasher with kills have been reproduced in many modern slashers. Better than most
80's slashers.
