The Swingin' 60s Horror Tournament
THIS TOURNAMENT IS DEDICATED TO NEVERENDING, THE RETURN, ALKYTRIO666, FORTUNATO, ROSHIQ AND DOC FAUSTUS ...and all other lovers of vintage cinema. Ahh, the lovely Swingin' Sixties. Birth of free love, civil rights, The Beatles, and the sexual revolution. Film was massively impacted by counterculture. Sex, violence and anarchy took over cinema, breaking boundaries with every step. Europe saw La Nouvelle Vague, the French New Wave movement -- and the Italian filmmakers hit absolute peak. There was an avant-garde movement every which way you looked, and as Hollywood's 'studio system' ripped apart at the seams, we saw the birth of younger, fierier 'New Hollywood.' So let's take a trip down memory lane this Halloween season, and get nostalgic all over again. I know I hung up my tourney boots not too long back, but this is the season of the boogeyman, and I am permitted one more resurrection. ;) First match up in a bit... |
Okay- you did this just to suck me in....
It will be tough... it will pit lots of my faves against each other. And shall we predict a winner right now? A certain B&W zombie film? |

Oh yeah it will be tough as hell alright. |

Let's just save a lot of time and cut to the finale right now:
Psycho vs. Night of the Living Dead |
I saw "I saw What You Did" recently and it doesn't hold up as well as some others.
I'll go for Haunted Palace for this round. Vincent Price says it all. |

Haunted Palace for me as well.
BTW I think I am going to love this one. Thanks V. |

This is going to be great, by the way, V. Can't wait. |
I'm going to throw one to Horrors of Spider Island. This movie is hilarious and the other two are kind of so-so examples of what they are. There are vastly better Corman "Poe" movies (he loses points for doing a Lovecraft story under the title of a Poe poem) and William Castle thrillers, but as a porno turned into a legitimate film that's somehow dirtier and more incoherent than it would be as a porno, Horrors of Spider Island is special.
|
I'll continue to check this tourney but I won't be able to vote in it often. Haven't seen many 60s horror films. Just the most famous ones.
|
Thanks guys. I hope you all love this tourney as much as I will. :)
6-1-0, The Haunted Palace scores a pretty easy win over Horrors of Spider Island and I Saw What You Did! |
|
Dracula, Prince of Darkness.
|
The Sadist is an incredible little indie that deserves to be better known.
But Lee will always be my fave Dracula, so I vote for Dracula. |
I'll have to go with The Sadist, a really claustrophobic and effective thriller done on a super-low budget. Plus cinematography by a young Vilmos Zsigmond.
|
The Sadist is one of the most underappreciated flicks ever IMO. Wonderfully made on a near-shoestring budget. One of the most underrated and unknown gems of all time.

His hair alone should have got an oscar. |
All good movies, but I just can't vote against Dracula.
So, Dracula Prince of Darkness |
3-1-0, Dracula: Prince of Darkness in the lead.
|
This tourney is really exciting for me cause I've just started watching a lot of these 60's horror films and everything is fresh in my mind. Plus some of my favourites of all time are from the 60s.
I'll go with Dracular: Prince of Darkness. |
Dracula .
|
Great tourney V! Haven't seen any of these three, but I'll be dropping by to vote on later matches.
|
Dracula for me as well.
|
Thanks Alky. Knew you d be pleasantly surprised. :)
6-1-0, Dracula: Prince of Darkness cruises through to the win. |
|
The Shuttered Room
|
I remember Straight-Jacket scaring the shit out of me in the theatre. Joan Crawford, a horror in her own right, teamed with William Castle. Unbeatable!
|
Straight-jacket
|
Strait Jacket - 2
The Shuttered Room - 1 Experiment in Terror - 0 Keep 'em coming... |
Straight-jacket

Strait-jacket
|
