What is your favorite David Cronenberg film and what are your thoughts on the direction he has taken since the early 90's? I myself miss the old Cronenberg.

I'm probably not the best person to answer this, because my two favorite Cronenberg flicks just happen to be his *least* "Cronenbergy" movies: THE FLY and THE DEAD ZONE.

Those two are, in fact, two of my favorite horror movies ever. From anyone.

Great picks. I would say The Dead Zone is against Cronenberg's style but The Fly fits right in. There's definitely a metamorphosis that takes place during that film and Cronenberg's all about messing with the flesh. Love both of the movies.

David Cronenberg is one of the most significant contemporary director. As my predecessors I love Dead Zone. I would add Videodrome, Naked Lunch and Crash. Cronenberg's films are charakterized by excellent climate and surprasing ending.

Videodrome and Scanners are my fave by him. I couldn't really get with his latest but I admire that he had the guts to show James Spader getting busy with ladies AND a man in Crash. That movie has a very creepy and cold vibe. I felt sorry for all the characters because they seemed desperately lonely despite all the pervy car crash sex they were having. LOL!
ExistenZ just confused me a lot. Though I think that was the goal.
But Scanners and Videodrome are just way better in my opinion. I love Debbie Harry in Videodrome too.

Those are two of faves as well. Glad to see Cronenberg um...cronies on here.

The Fly, I think is certainly his best.

videodrome all the way. that and well nightbreed, that while couldnt be classified as a cronenberg film, i know he and barker did some major coloaberating on it.

I am a big fan of his films, my favourites are The Brood, Crash and VideoDrome.

Shivers, Videodrome, The Fly and Rabid are probably my favorites but I've liked pretty much everything he's put out but I haven't seen M Butterfly or Spiders yet. I really like how effects look so fucked up... and unusual compared to others like everything looks hokey and fake but in a good way (if you get what i mean).

My favorites are the Brood, Shivers, Rabid, Crash and Existenz. Didn't like Dead Ringers, the Fly, or Dead Zone.

IMHO he's making better movies now than he ever has been. Crash and Existenz still deal with his obsessions of body modification and distortion but with very interesting plotlines as well. His earlier films were great but the plots were weaker.

I'm not a fan of his movies now. I didn't enjoy Naked Lunch, Dead Ringers, or Spider at all. Existenz is his only new flick I liked. I wish he would return to his older era. He has a new flick he's working on called Painkillers. Don't know what it's about though.

I love all his flicks in between Shivers and The Fly, and Existenz. The funny thing is, the first time I saw Existenz I missed the credits and didn't know I was watching a David Cronenberg movie. I only guessed when Robert Silverman showed up. He only acts in Cronenberg movies.

Well, all of his work is worth seeing. As he develops, he's getting better, imo. Spider was a brilliant, subtle film.

Favorites (and least favorites). Favorite is undoubtably Crash. I have watched it countless times and love it. Videodrome up next, and then Naked Lunch.

As for his his mainstream efforts, I find them less effective. The Fly, Dead Zone were big letdowns. Thankfully, Cronenberg went back home after those, and dug back into his roots. He's much better for it. In the scheme of things, those are his mainstream efforts. I like my Cronenberg purer.

Videodrome and Dead Ringers are my two favorite films of his, though I have a lot of fondness for a lot of his movies - Rabid, The Brood, Shivers, Naked Lunch, ExistenZ, etc.

I've been disappointed by his recent work. I really ddon't like Crash, and though I appreciated Spider, I couldn't like it as much as some of his other work.

But, Cronenberg's still young, and I'd wager we've got another 15-20 years of work from him, if not more. I'm guessing this might be a depressed mid-period in his career and that things could get pretty interesting again as he gets older.
