Criterion Collection- Huge Sale!
Barnes and Noble is having a 50% off sale on Criterion Collection titles. If you're like me and can't often purchase DVDs for $35 a pop, you'll rejoyce when you see this. Most titles are running for $19.99, and there are a few gems (Bunuel's Simon of the Desert to mention one) that are going for around $13. If there was ever a time to purchase your favorite Criterion titles, this is it.

Holy Crap! That's awesome! How long is the sale on for?
|
August 2nd, I believe. Also, if anyone does order, post what you do on here. I'm trying to figure out what'll be on my list.
|
I may have to pick up THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY
|
Wow - their Canadian shipping rates aren't even too bad. I'll be grabbing at least a couple, no questions asked.

The only one I'll be picking up for sure is Eyes Without a Face, been dying to see that one for way too long. Otherwise...I'm open for suggestions. Probably end up getting 2-3. |

Sounds like a plan to me - adding it to the cart!
Good chance for you to check out Clean, Shaven too, man - if you've got room in the cart for another, I think you'd really dig it. |

|
is this just on-line only ?
|
I think I may do Eyes Without a Face and The Third Man, maybe Viridiana.
|
Okay, I finally went through the whole list (not just the bestsellers) and here's my list:
Definitely getting to replace VHS copies: Black Narcissus Chungking Express Eyes Without a Face (I actually don't have this on VHS, but this is a must buy) Ones I would like to get, but it's a long list: The Last Emperor The Virgin Spring The Third Man Time Bandits Grand Illusion 8 1/2 M The Red Shoes Viridiana Any suggestions on the "like to get" list? I have yet to see (but I know they're good) Virgin Spring, M, and only parts of the Red Shoes. Also, it's been a long time since I've seen Grand Illusion and 8 1/2, though I remember I liked them (though not why). |

The Virgin Spring 8 1/2 M Viridiana and probably even The Red Shoes. |

On my way home from work today I stopped in my local store and got the very new release of Last Year at Marienbad for a baffling $20. They weren't even offering this one for half-off online because its such a recent release. I'm pretty sure I squealed out loud the moment I saw it. Pap- I agree with Fortunato (with a heavy emphasis on Viridiana). I would also recommend from your list La Grande Illusion. |
Oh, and Fort- how much did you get the Seventh Seal reissue for? I'm picking that up later this week.

Amazing! I'll be going back soon, and/or perhaps ordering some stuff online. |
Yes! I think I'm finally going to buy that copy of 3 Women.
|
@Fortunato & Alky
Thanks for the suggestions! What I will be buying later today: Viridiana (You guys convinced me! :) ) Eyes Without a Face The Red Shoes The Virgin Spring The Last Emperor Time Bandits Those last two peaked the interest of my husband, so I gotta get those since he rarely lets me expand his cinematic horizons. :p I also opted not to get DVDs for the ones I already have on VHS since they're still in excellent condition. I'd rather expand my collection then replace. |

Oh, dear. I'm going to end up spending all my money on this damn sale.
I just ordered online: Carl Th. Dreyer boxset (another one I've been waiting forever to pick up) Gate of Flesh Made in U.S.A. By Brakhage: An Anthology (replacement copy) L'eclisse I really want that Agnes Varda set, too. This is bad. And still two and a half more weeks to go. |
Picked up Wise Blood tonight.

And from what I hear, it's a wonderful adaptation. Let us know what you pick up tomorrow. |
-Simon of the Desert
(By the way, Fort, you should pick this up. Funny as hell, and only a mere $12!) -The Phantom of Liberty -That Obscure Object of Desire -L'avventura They didn't have Eyes Without a Face or Clean Shaven, both of which I was planning on picking up. I'm sure I'll be back to post more soon! |

Have you ever checked out that Brakhage anthology by the way? It's quite an impressive set. I lost my original copy before I could finish the whole thing, but it's an incredible release. I don't know if you're familiar with this work, but it's so intense, kaleidoscopic and visceral. It really sends the mind into a whirl. |
Dah, no, but I've been itching to check some of his stuff out forever- I'm completely unfamiliar with Brakhage. Man, if I had a million dollars this sale would put me over.

You really must check out some of his work. Do you have Netflix or anything? Or maybe even take a chance on the Criterion release. Also: Just out of curiosity, what experimental cinema do you like? |
Quote:
I have not seen much in the way of experimental, but I have seen some Jodorowsky, who interests me, and some of Painleve's crazier stuff. Any recommendations? |

- Kenneth Anger - Maya Deren - Jan Švankmajer - The Brothers Quay have done some interesting work certainly worth checking out The early Dada guys had some great stuff: (obviously) Buñuel/Dalí's Un chien andalou, Jean Epstein's The Fall of the House of Usher (1928), Man Ray's L'Étoile de mer (1928), Marcel Duchamp's Anémic cinéma (1926), etc. One of the more impressive short films I have ever seen is a 1926 piece by Dimitri Kirsanoff called Ménilmontant. There is a wonderful DVD set that Kino released called Avant-Garde: Experimental Cinema of the 1920s and 30s that I would seriously recommend if you're interested in getting into more experimental work. Quite a few of the ones I've mentioned are included, actually (Ménilmontantis on there). If you haven't seen The Man with the Movie Camera (1929) by Dziga Vertov, that's definitely worth a watch, too. |
I second Maya Deren (Meshes on the Afternoon and At Land being the best) and Man with a Movie Camera (way ahead of it's time).

Haha, that's Švankmajer, by the way. Apparently I had some copy/paste issues.
|
Have you read Kino-Eye? I mostly liked it, he had a very interesting way at looking at the cinema, but godDAMN was that man high on himself!
