Not Racism...but almost.
So it seems that every country have their personal whipping posts who at every turn they like to mock or make jokes about. For England it's usually France and jokes about their surrendering ways or the Welsh and their sheep related bestiality. Their are of course always going to be playful jokes about other countries but those are some of the main ones.
What about America? I imagine it would be Canada or Mexico but I could be wrong. And what about Canada? Do you have any personal ones? I for instance, regularly mention my distaste for the Dutch. Cheebs and Disease, any Aussie ones? V and Roshiq, what about you guys? I'd be interested to hear from you all on the matter. Got any jokes or slang names for them? |
America is a melting pot, we make fun of everybody even ourselves. Though you'll hear more jokes about Mexicans than Canadians.
|
We definitely like to joke about those hosers, and Canadians take plenty of potshots at residents of the USA.
|
Looooot of Mexican racism. Actually, a lot of people I know don't even mean to be racist, but they let loose some pretty offensive slurs.

The French regularly mock Belgians, who are like the French equivalent of Canadians for Americans. They make jokes about their accent, their food, etc... Funny that, the distaste the English have for the French is quite mutual. I tend to think it's because you're all so alike. You not liking the Dutch (who share a border with Belgium) only strengthens my theory. :p |

Canada is it's own joke. No need to heap it on.

I say anyone and everyone as long as people know you are joking. I am not a racist I think everyone is the same and should be treated that way but jokes about other races and countries are funny as long as it is just jokes
|
Lame. All of you.
|
Us Canadians keep the racism within our own borders...it's all about Newfie jokes.
|
Here in the US, we can't stop making black jokes long enough to make fun of anyone else. It's really really sad.

Not really- I know a guy from Vancouver that can spew a steady stream of US jokes for hours.
|
I know in my town the main one is Mexicans. We tend to generally hate them around here.
|
Not really racism? It totally is but people feel its OK because its all in "fun".
Over here like everywhere else people have their jokes about whatever minority. I'm as guilty as everyone else but its something I'm making note of and changing but shit like this is pretty deep seeded in our society. I really shake my head and have gone WTF a few times and its made me make an effort to do the right thing. |
Well, in Ferret's original post he specified nationalities making fun of each other- by definition that's not "racism." England, France, USA, Canada, Mexico, etc are not races.
|
Oh yeh I get that. I was jsut getting at how this usually stems from a deep seeded prejudice throughout time and perhaps shouldn't be taken so lightly.
|
There's a difference between belittling people in regards to their nationality and needling them. When I was in the Army, we poked fun at squids, flyboys and jarheads relentlessly; I still give my best friend, a Navy vet, a hard time. Doesn't mean I don't love and respect the guy.
|
Seattle has a good mix of everything, and we like to make fun of everyone with our friends. I have friends of so many nationalities it's ridiculous. I love it.
For example: Asians are of course short, bad drivers and video game nerds. Unless you're talking about Indians, who are all cab drivers. Most Latinos are baby factories and live with at least 20 relatives in one house. Americans are fat, lazy and looking for any excuse to get on welfare. The French are, to quote the Simpsons, cheese eating surrender monkeys. Canadians drink too much clamato and are ruled by a beaver who drinks syrup our of a hat. They also all wear mounty uniforms. Scottsmen and the Irish are all drunks with bad cuisine. The English are all soccer hooligans with bad teeth. We all suck here, apparently:p |
Actually, there's no such thing as race. As humans, we are one race. The other shit is just ethnicity and culture.
|
I make fun of mexicans a lot. I think that's about it. I just really don't like them, never have. Probably from living in florida as a kid. A group of them stole are radio out of our car within like 3 minutes of going into a store. All of the illegal immigration doesn't help either.

The Irish tend to have a deep rooted dislike (which often extends to hatred) for the English...
In other news water is wet. |
You just keep searching for ye pot o' gold O'reilly and we'll keep to our tea and crumpets, Old chap.

In Australia there are plenty of Jokes regarding sheep shagging Kiwis or New Zealanders as you may know them.
Then mainlanders all so heap it on Tasmanians, even though it is part of Australia it seems like a very different place, I mean, people with two heads? And of course, the bloody P.O.M.E's...(Prisoners of Mother England) We give them some shit. Where I work at the moment, we tend to hack it on the Americans, we deal with them a lot and, well, lets just say they are not the brightest country. |
Ah yes, P.O.M.E's.
Tell me, Disizzle, what about the Papu New Guinea folk. What're they like? |

LOL..Australians and New Zealanders are probably the worst of all countries. We just do not get along.. in big sports tournaments , you will always get the nationwide coverages and sold out events..especially when we come up against each other. Funnily enough though..NZlanders will take offence if anybody from another country puts Australians down and will defend them to the max. We feel its our right and no one elses.. |
Hi Stubbs!

Ah, the ol' "It's mine to make fun of, not yours!"

This is pretty much all true, hahaha. Stereotypes are based on at least some shred of truth. The one stereotype that I noticed is that Canadians seems to "genuinely" (notice the quotes...obviously I am speaking in stereotypes, so don't take it personally) kind of despise Americans. It seems like whenever you talk to an American about a Canadian, they'll make a joke about being our 51st state or something about poutine, but mostly pretty harmless. But if you talk to a Canadian, they go on a tirade about how "You know that Americans think our police force is all mounties?" or something similar, but without that "joking tone". It's like a serious, angry tone. I've seen it on more than 10 occasions from various Canadians visiting the US or visiting Canada myself. It's kind of scary, really....do Canadians really hate us that much? Hahaha, I can tell ya, I don't think Americans hate Canadians at all. Other than that, I see a lot more "racism" between states than actual national origin racism. -D |
