Question - Might Stir Some Conversation

This is something I've been wondering about lately. Not just forum related, but the question still applies (especially considering some events in HDC's past)

Let's say one of the regulars here posted a thread - for sake of example, let's say I posted the thread - titled "I Just Killed Someone", and in the thread they (I) posted full details and some kind of photographic evidence.

How would you react? Would you take it seriously? Would you pass it off as a hoax? Would you get in touch with the FBI (or CSIS in my case)? Would you save the images?

Would it effect whether or not you decided to continue coming here, or using the internet? What if you happened to see a report on the news the next day, proving that some kid in eastern Canada just chopped up some guy and posted about it on a forum. How would that change things?

Now I don't want anyone worrying or anything - I have not (to my knowledge) killed anyone. Nor do I intend to. This just stems from a conversation I was having with a buddy of mine, and I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Posher778 05-31-2009 04:26 PM

I wouldn't be too concerned. None of our regulars are like that anyway, no matter how twisted and screwed up some of us try to seem... If there was a member who did that, they probably wouldn't be around that long.

Or so you think...

Come on, Posh. Entertain the hypothetical.

...

Honestly, if someone posted an "I Killed Someone" thread I would believe it was a joke (especially since a lot of our members are creative and love homegrown filmmaking and photoshop). If on the NEXT day, however, it was revealed that it wasn't a joke at all... I would take it as a good ice breaker opportunity and way to freak people out.

"So I'm really into Horror and was actually part of an online forum where Shotgun Sammy was a regular... Yes, that Shotgun Sammy."

I would also continue coming back.

Zero 05-31-2009 05:33 PM

i'd turn you in in a minute

newb 05-31-2009 05:40 PM

Would you get in touch with the FBI

there ya go

and I would ask for Scully

cheebacheeba 05-31-2009 06:04 PM

I would message the person in question and ask if they were serious, making it clear that if they were I would be contacting the authorities...although, even if they said they weren't, I probably would anyway.
Any further kill in this regard would be another blow against horror fans and how people view them - I'd want to put a stop to that, and well, subsequent life lost thereafter.

If it turns out they were joking, they deserve the lesson they're about to get taught, way I figure it.

I'd probably do this. Asshatery is par for the course on message boards, but some shit crosses the line. If someone pulled a stunt like this then got a shitload of heat, chalk it up as "had it coming."

novakru 05-31-2009 07:27 PM

I would only turn them in if it were 'certain' regulars:D

^Nail on the head there buddy^. On another forum we found out we had a murderer among us after he was arrested. He'd killed 2 people that he knew and was caught pretty much right away. He didn't post anything about it, but it's still really weird to find out you've just talked shit to a man capable of murder.

If the "I just killed someone" thread were not a hoax, it'd probably be a cry for help. Why anounce to the masses what could put you in prison? However I don't think everyone who reads it needs to get on the phone with the FBI(where do you get that number anyway?), but definetly report it to an online authority and let them contact whoever.

isn't this actually a bit like 'the incident of which we do not speak' that happened several years back that brought so much attention to HDC (before even my time but i recall the stories)

i wouldnt do anything but brag to my friends that i posted in the same forum with another killer.

ferretchucker 06-01-2009 07:27 AM

I think I'd leave it as a joke at first, then as I began to think they were more serious I'd stop talking to them and like Chronogrl, use it as an icebreaker or good conversation point. I can just imagine the look on people's faces at school.

yup - if it's a joke, then you should expect someone to call you on it and you should expect a visit from the cops, because that sort of thing should never be taken lightly.

and on a related note...

Three kids I know are orphans right now because their father murded thier mother, then tured the gun on himself Saturday night.

Their 5 year-old daughter is in my son's Kindergarten class. She and her older brothers (10 & 12) were in the house when it happened and were wandering the street outside the house when the police showed up.

All because he thought she was having an affair. Words fail me.

scouse mac 06-01-2009 07:43 AM

If I thought it was genuine, Id be straight on to the rozzers. My conscience clear, I would continue posting (whilst saving the posted images to sell to the press!).

Haunted 06-01-2009 09:41 AM

I would go to the cops. I think I'd be a little too disturbed to use it as an icebreaker, but I'd brag to my brother about it. I'd still post here, although maybe not quite as much. I'm a very sensitive girl.

Papillon Noir 06-01-2009 10:27 AM

I'd go straight to the cops too. It's pretty serious stuff and shouldn't be joked around with. What if that person really did kill someone and was planning on killing someone else? What if you could have stopped it? Don't just write someone off because you think you "know" them on a message board.

If I was in the US right now, I would ve killed a bunch of those corporate honchos from Fox.

You know why.

No, I don't. Care to elaborate?

I know Fox has got a pretty bad reputation for being very conservative.

missmacabre 06-01-2009 10:56 AM

I would also have turned you in. There was a story a few months ago where someone on the Newgrounds forum posted about how he was going to torch a middle school in England. He had pictures of the can of gasoline, and posted a time and date for the attack (which was later that day). A friend of mine from Montreal was online at the time of the posting and he called the authorities here to find out what to do and they told him to call the British authorities. He had a hell of a time convincing people that he was serious but finally convinced them to try to find and question this kid. In the meantime hte remaining people on the forums were telling this guy "oh you;re full of crap. prove it. post more pictures." which did what they were attempting to do and kept the kid at his computer for a few hours. Eventually he took off and was arrested a block from the school carrying a can of gasoline.

So even if you think people are attention whores, saying they are gonna do something stupid, or harm themselves you should do something about it.

bloody_ribcut 06-01-2009 10:58 AM

...............be back in a minute,lol

Doc Faustus 06-01-2009 11:07 AM

I'd like to say that I would contact the police, but I'm not so sure. I might very well be tempted to think it was a hoax, which is a shame because I've read enough true crime stuff to know that things like that can happen.

Disease 06-01-2009 11:37 AM

So there you go Return, probably best you don't post that thread now... Someone might turn you in.

Haha yeh it did sound like he's testing the waters for his big murder plan :)

Doc Faustus 06-01-2009 01:20 PM

Heīs already posted it on Cat Fancierīs online forum, where they REALLY donīt know what to do about it.

Kemal 06-01-2009 01:35 PM

There is so much bullshit on the internet that you'd really need something specific and explicit to go to the cops. Pictures and direct threats would be ideal. Not to mention you need to know an approximate location in which to call the cops - there are no interweb police, although a threat communicated interstate might involve the FBI, I don't know how much interest they'd show. Best to grab some screenshots on a flash disk and go down to the local field office. And have a moderator trace his/her IP. You need compelling evidence that a crime is about to be or has been committed. Not just some kid posting "ZOMG im gunna kill u!!11"

Hello, Police please...

Yeh, I just had my life threatened by Kemal. Yes, Kemal. I don't know his actual name but I do have a direct quote from Horror.com. You see. Pardon? Oh, well...hmmm, additional information. Erm...he is a semi regular poster on the website. He is black and joined 5 years ago...so he's over five years old. Hell- Hello? Hello?

Noah 06-01-2009 03:59 PM

Hypothetically speaking:

I don't think that the fact someone made a thread on here, stating they killed someone, etc. would detur me from coming on and posting more afterward.

It wouldn't be the BOARD's fault for someone posting shit like that. I assume that said member wouldn't be a member for much too long after doing so anyway.
