Yeah it definitely is. That's amazing, but I suppose one would do anything to scrap being known as the fat kid in that movie.

he's not that chubby .. he's never been shinny but he's a lot slimmer there than when he did LOTR

He was under orders to put weight on when he got the part of Samwise. Think he tries his best not to let himself go.
