Which ending is better?

Between Happy endings or unhappy endings, which do you prefer?
Personally, I prefer unhappy endings, but mostly because when they do happy endings it seems a bit forced. But a lot of times an unhappy ending can be even more forced. But if it were between a movie with a happy ending done right and an unhappy ending done right, I'd have to go with the unhappy ending.
But neutral endings are best IMO. Like Almost Famous or Taxi Driver or Lost in Translation. Open endings are good, too.

The unhappy endings myself, fuck all that happy la di da shit.

Open endings are cool to.

I'd have to say unhappy are better, but only because so many movies are happy endings, it's nice to see an end where everything goes to shit... Eventhough they usually make me feel uncomfortable heh.

As for open endings I can't stand them. I hate not knowing what happens in the end, which is why I don't read science fiction :P heh.

MythMan84 02-23-2004 07:55 PM

ya, unhappy is more realistic too IMO

A great unhappy ending is the movie TAPS
Tom Cruise gets his ass slaughtered in his first role.

Speaking of Tom Cruise, I watched Cast Away the other day again cuz it was on TV. Man.. stuck on an island for four years, and a picture of the woman you love was the only thing that kept you going. Then to come home and find out she's already married another, and has a kid... That would be fucking pain..

I think it depends on the story for what I prefer ending wise, happy endings are fine if it fits the story I just hate forced endings either way that just don't make sense.

I would generally prefer most horror movies ending to end with everyone dead - it's kinda the point as in real life I don't think any of would beat Jason or Freddy but I guess in general people don't want that or that's what it would be like seeing as all these movies are tested.

I do really like those open ending though where you can decide yourself - most people hate those so they are rare. Loved the ending to Jeepers Creepers.

Yeah it depends on the type of movie, but in horror movies I usally unhappy endings because people don't expect them, like this one time I showed my friend day of the dead and he was like "what happend to the zombies did they kill them all?" :D so Itold him that the world was doomed and everybody will die.

Vodstok 02-24-2004 03:57 AM

Yes the ending of Jeepers Creepers was great, not to mention unexpected. I really expected a cookie-cutter, happy ending. i was pleasantly surprised.

the original 28 days later ending was a good happy ending. The alternate endings sucked. And if anyone watched the radical alternate ending, i'm really glad they decided against it. I like how Danny boyle put it:

"We had already established that a single drop of blood in the eye could infect someone one, so how the fuck were they going to completely remove all of someone's blood to 'cure' them?"

Half the time I am sure horror movie makers underestimate the intelligence of horror movie fans and think we all mindless red knecks.

Even better would have been Christopher Walken in cataway. I dont think Different would begin to describe it.
