Never thought I'd see the day

I'm watching the Animal Planet, a documentary about tarantulas. I am horribly afraid of spiders, but holy crap, I actually think baby tarantulas are cute. They're so fragile and kind of playful. I had a friend back in high school that had a tarantula as a pet and I never got how he could like the thing. But maybe there is something to it. I'm not about to run out and get one, but I kinda understand it now.

Anyone else ever find themselves liking something they never in a million years thought that they would?

probably different types of music, when i was a kid i told myself "ill only listen to rap music forever". as i grew, so did my taste in tunes. thats all i can remember..

on a tarantula note, i used to own two of them. they were wild ones, so i never held them. shoot, even if they were the tamest in the world and drugged with no fangs i still wouldnt pick them up. i hate spider, just two days ago i found another brown recluse in my bed. its dead now.......i remember feeding my arachnids lizard i would catch, now that i think about it i feel sorry for them.

Yah, my friend that had the tarantula used to hold it and let other people hold it too. Surprisingly, no one ever got bit. He tried to get me to at least put my hand on the floor and let it crawl over my hand. The thing got about 2 inches away and I quietly moved my hand away, no thanks, I'll pass. *shudder*

I used to hate coffee, the taste of it just made me sick. Then when i got older i started drinking it black, now i cant go a day without it.

missmacabre 12-06-2008 11:45 AM

I had a horrible fear of sharks once, but then I watched a documentary on them and how they got a bad reputation after Jaws came out. Now I realize they are just big fish and I actually quite like them.

ditto on the coffee - i used to think it was vile and now i can't make it through a day without a few pots of the stuff

oddly, i also recall that when i was young i loved pickles- now they make me wretch

Veggies. I refused to eat them for too long. Now I realize that you need them for your health's sake.

That looks like a pretty damn big spider, wow. I wouldn't want that thing on my arm, or anywhere else. Hope it doesn't pop out at you again.

I don't know. That's not a question that would occur to me if I saw it on my arm or any where close to me. :D I would just freak out cuz it's a big spider.

Phalanx 12-06-2008 07:10 PM

I have two huntsman spiders, one very large, one small that I just grabbed recently - I believe they're a relative to the tarantula.
They don't sell them as pets, but they're quite common so I've made a few "sanctuaries" for them to live in.
They're not bad, generally if one enters your house it'll just run away from you and rarely approach people like some stupid outdoor breeds.
I can touch/hold the larger one without really aggravating it - he'll just crawl about on you. His abdomen feels like a soft furry marble.
HUGE scary-ass fangs, but they rarely attack people at all...relatively harmless if they do, they just kind've leave painful stab wounds.
I'll see if I can get some pics.

I plan to get different breeds if I can.

It's just a matter of association - a lot of people are dead scared of non-venomous snakes on account of the poisonous ones, humans are not often going to be harmed by what they fear.

bloody_ribcut 12-06-2008 07:33 PM

if theres one thing i hate, its painfull stab wounds....your going to post pics of your stab wounds?

i still hate when a snake strikes you, thats why i dont deal with them at all any more. i used to have three..

Nono, it's never bitten ME, it's just that that's what happens if they do, big fangs, pump a bit of anticoagulant type spider stuff I guess...
I'll see if I can get some pics of the spiders themselves though.

monalisa 12-06-2008 07:48 PM

I'm not afraid at all of non-venomous snakes (as long as they don't bite me). I really think a lot of snakes have beautiful markings. I held boa constrictor once at the zoo a long time ago. It was probably about 7 ft long. It felt pretty cool except that I had a tube-top on (if you're old enough to remember those) and the snake was draped around my neck and as it moved it kept making my tube-top slide down and I had to keep pulling it up. It was kind of funny. But I was totally relaxed and really enjoyed holding the snake.

Spiders...totally different story...they terrify me. But those little baby tarantulas appealed to me for some reason.

YES! Pictures! That would be awesome. Even though spiders scare the hell out of me, I am fascinated with looking at them, pictures that is.
