Candy Talk

First of all, I have a question regarding Dots in the above poll: does anybody like them? Secondly, I would like to discuss the sugar baby. When I put out candy bowl, letting trick or treaters take whatever they want, for the first hour four out of five times, they went for the Sugar Babies. There was other good candy in there, plenty of tootsie rolls, peanut butter cups, snickers, kitkat, a few chocolate spiders from Fanny May chocolates, and yet, they opted for the Sugar Babies. I have a theory about this: people don't eat Sugar Babies outside of a Halloween context or in regular sized packages. Anybody here casually eat Sugar Babies? Were they a source of joy or irritation when received in the treat bag?

monster123 11-01-2008 06:33 AM

I like sugar babies! My daughter and I went trick or treating and in my neighborhood it seemed like the spirit of halloween was gone. It finally got good when we went to the richer neighborhoods. Alot of tootsie rolls though i hate those.

Doc Faustus 11-01-2008 06:35 AM

So you would, for instance, purchase sugar babies as a supermarket impulse buy and not just a Halloween treat?

I do. I use to bring them to work with me.

Doc Faustus 11-01-2008 06:38 AM

That's cool. I've never seen anybody casually eating those, but people are so happy to see them on Halloween. I was worried that it was a craving that gets stifled.

monster123 11-01-2008 06:40 AM

Yea i have actually liked the candy since i was young. When i was a kid and i got them for halloween it would be exciting. My parents wanted to keep candy away from me when i was younger.

Doc Faustus 11-01-2008 07:16 AM

A lot of parents do that.

bloody_ribcut 11-01-2008 07:36 AM

i buy a box of sugar babies every weekend.

ferretchucker 11-01-2008 08:17 AM

I don't have a clue what dots or sugar babies are. But at halloween, anything that isn't made by hersheys (other than reeses) is pretty much fine for me.

ferretchucker 11-01-2008 08:19 AM

Oh, and also tootsie pops and tootsie rolls are a big dissapointment!

What a perfect thread for the day after Halloween!

I don't like Sugar babies, but we didn't get any

Dots aren't too bad, but we didn't get any

We got mostly chocolate, as usual around here, and that's what we like

Black licorace, hard candy, root beer barrels and peanut butter kisses are my disappointment...BUT, we didn't get any of those this year either :)

My daughter loves Hershey Bars thats all she wanted this year lol We ended up getting crap like pb kisses and black licorace and alot of the people were like angry they even had to put out candy.

ferretchucker 11-01-2008 10:46 AM

I can't stand hersheys. It's so...dull and bland. Galaxy and Cadbury's are where it's at!

pinkfloyd45769 11-01-2008 11:32 AM

Dots are one of my fave candies:)I like sugar babies and i would eat them all the time,if they actually sold them here all year. This year we gave popcorn balls and candy bars.My mom also gave kids cider and donuts. My kids got really shitty candy, cheap suckers and gum. They don't eat much candy and i rarely let them have gum(small children and gum do not mix):)I just think people got cheap and candy was pretty expensive this year.

FC,you hate all the candy i love:(

pinkfloyd45769 11-01-2008 11:33 AM

I almost forgot,my mom made hands fom latex gloves, candy corn, and popcorn. The kids really liked those too:)

I don't think it's fair to even compare Hershey's to Cadbury's. It's like saying "I think Monopoly's less fun than having sex." That doesn't reflect badly upon Monopoly or mean Monopoly's a dull game, it means Monopoly's not sex. Hershey is a good utilitarian chocolate. If I need chocolate and I have eighty cents and it is not Easter, I end up buying something from Hershey. Cadbury is just exponentially better and is in a different class of food. To be honest, I prefer Cadbury chocolate to pretty much any other chocolate.

Agreed :) :D

Doc Faustus 11-01-2008 12:53 PM

By the way, I'm also surprised by all the love for Dots. Every time I have given out Dots (usually because they're cheap and in a package with other candies) I've gotten an "I'm gonna stab your ass" look from trick or treaters.

ferretchucker 11-01-2008 12:54 PM

I think that was a compliment to Cadburys...

How much does it cost out in America? Over here it's between 40p and 60p, depending on the store.

Doc Faustus 11-01-2008 12:55 PM

Occasionally, I can find a bar at the dollar store when I'm lucky, it's just not too common at grocery stores, pharmacies and whatnot.

ferretchucker 11-01-2008 12:58 PM

What about galaxy Chocolate? It might be called Dove in america. I know it is in some places. That's my favourite. It's the smoothest IMO.

neverending 11-01-2008 01:21 PM

Aren't Dove bars made by Hersheys?

No doves a name brand candy bar.

neverending 11-01-2008 01:56 PM

Ah, you7're right- but Doc- Cadbury's products in America are manufactured by Hersheys.

Doc Faustus 11-01-2008 03:23 PM

The hell you say. I guess they just use the good chocolate, then.

ferretchucker 11-01-2008 03:38 PM

It's not by Hersheys if you buy it in an English Shop in America, but I think it's quite expensive in them.

I do the same thing for halloween ice....freeze water in the latex gloves right after mixing good coloring in it. Very cool

crabapple 11-02-2008 06:09 AM

Sugar Babies and Dots, I used to get both of those in the little packets or boxes for Halloween, so I associate them with Halloween as classic candies.

Bazooka bubble gum, Sugar Daddy, Snickers, SweeTarts, Smarties, those little Hershey mini bars, all these (and others) were common to see in your treat bag, and are therefore cooler than other candies by nature.

The Flayed One 11-02-2008 06:16 AM

I don't eat many sweets. I honestly don't care for chocolate.

Every now and then I'll eat sour patch kids. I also like black licorice (especially jelly beans) and peppermint candies.

What about really dark chocolate?

Zero 11-02-2008 07:34 AM

i've never been a big candy fan.

ferretchucker 11-02-2008 08:25 AM

I suppose you just eat exotic jungle fruit and lost travellers.
