The Official Name Thread

Sup guys and gals. So for some of us who can't keep up, curious, or are puzzled about each other's names, I'd figure we let each other know. For those of you who are cool with referring to each other by username, that's fine too. But just post your names here. I'll go first.

I'm Shannon (If you're nosey and want the full just pm me--but I'd figure most of us don't mind giving up the first) :)

La Chat Noire 10-11-2008 10:23 AM

I'm Colleen...some people shorten it to Leen though.

I can relate I've been reffered to some by "Shan" or "Shanny"

ChronoGrl 10-11-2008 11:00 AM

My name is Amanda and I'm an al- .... *ahem* horror fan.

Rayne 10-11-2008 11:03 AM

Okay...Here goes

The name on my birth certificate is Catherine

It was my grandmother's middle name...I kinda dodged a bullet there, my grandmother's FIRST name was Gertrude, and my mother was afraid people might shorten it to 'Gerty', which made her think 'Dirty Gerty'

When I was 10 years old, I decided to change the spelling, and I started writing 'Kathryn' on all of my papers...I had a few reasons for that:

1) I don't really like the letter 'C'...It looks like it's incomplete...A circle with a piece missing, or lazily left hanging open...It also looks like a gluttonous slob, round and always with its mouth hanging open, just sitting there ready to eat up all of the other letters in my name

2) The letter 'K' is a more aggressive letter...It has legs, it's on the move, it is always standing up and it's a 'tall' letter, with a firm, straight back...It always looks like it's ready to kick the other letters if they get out of line, it keeps them moving...It's a motivational letter, and it just looks better (stronger) than the letter 'C'

3) 'Kathryn' in its entirety looks better than 'Catherine'...Kathryn is shorter, more precise, it doesn't waste letters, it doesn't take up as much space, and it looks more phonetically accurate

As with most 2 syllable names, it has been shortened in casual speaking

Kathryn = Kat + Rayne

My family tends to call me 'Kat', while my friends usually call me 'Rayne'

While I was playing the BloodRayne video game, my daughter was watching and she said "OMG, she's YOU"...She was referring to Rayne's demeanor, her attitude, her sarcasm, and often caustic wit...When she says "Ok, you can stop shooting me now" in a deadpan voice, my daughter said that I would say something along those lines in pretty much the same tone...BloodRayne also does things herself, and takes charge of the situation (NOT the MOVIE BloodRayne, that was NOT BloodRayne!...Uwe Boll should be shot for calling that character 'BloodRayne'...If for no other reason)...Also, everyone said that I looked like BloodRayne (Video Game Rayne, the REAL Rayne), until I started dying my hair black because I never really liked being a redhead (my natural color)....And so, my first ever forum name was BloodRayne (This was my first ever forum, btw)...And after Boll screwed up the association for me, I just shortened to Rayne

I'm sure that there's all sorts of psychology mixed into this litany of verbosity...But...It is what it is :)

Nice story. Love how you analyze the letters. Very Cool. My favorite letter is S.

I have a friend by the name of Catherine too. She also hated the C version and hated the name altogether. She also despised being called Cat, and Cathy. So she goes by Rin (rine part of catherine)

Rin/Rayne...Pretty much the same, and likely for the same reasons :)

See? I'm not so eccentric after all :D

EDIT: WHOOPS...I was banning spammers on this ID :o

jenna26 10-11-2008 11:19 AM

Jennifer....most call me Jen. Jenna came from a character in one of my short stories, the 26 was because....I was 26 when I first joined here. So original...

Papillon Noir 10-11-2008 11:35 AM

My name is also Katherine and I do go by the full Katherine.

Growing up, my family decided to give me the nickname "Kathy". Kathy reminds me of 40 year old spinsters with a lot of cats. I have never met anyone of my peers named Kathy, just people who have spinster aunts named Kathy, whose lives suck.

So, after trying out a few other nicknames: Kat, Kate, Kay, Rin, even Kathy Leigh (even though my middle name is Anne), I decided to just go with Katherine. It's easier, the name is already on my driver's license and it sounds nice. Not to mention lots of famous Katherines/Catherines.

I never tried "Katie" as I knew several Katies growing and they were all bitches.

I concur. I was very entertained by that. But I still love the letter C. Mostly because of the c is for cookie song.

VampiricClown 10-11-2008 11:40 AM

My first name is Joshua. I started going by my middle name Cole, when all of my friends started referring to me as "Josh L." (L for my last name), because they all had 15 friends named Josh.

So Cole, it be.

No offense to any whom are named the following but:

Often especially in the 90s a lot of Katies, Ambers, Ashley, and Brittanys were either bitches or prissy ones you couldn't stand. All thanks to clueless, although I love the show and the movie.

Some people call me JC. People have also called me "asshole" as well as some other profane names. It doesn't really matter what you call me, as long as you call me.

hahaha....technically a nickname is another name other than your actually name and often is shorter than your actual name. So technically in theory you have a preference and do not prefer Dave because techincally Dave is considered a nickname.

Sorry for the overanalyzing...it's a habit. :)

i can handle the shortning of a name - i do that too .. but thats about it :)

there's a guy at work - good guy - who once told me - everyone calls me scooter.

I said to him - i wont be doing that ... since we're both over 8 years of age and all...

nightmare_of _death 10-11-2008 12:38 PM

Alexandra, but I just go by Alex, I just hate having to write out my whole name all the time.

My mom wanted to add and I in there so it would of been Alexandria.............most people when they first meet me or something end up calling me that too.It gets kind of annoyng.

In 3rd grade....there were a set of boy and girl twins in class named Alexander and Alexandria but they too didn't like how long it was so here's what we did:

---we called the guy Alex
---we called the girl Lexy

Lucas.

His whole name was Josh Lucas.

So, yes, for a while I could say I'm dating Josh Lucas.

(Incidentally he DID look a bit like Josh Lucas the actor: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0524197/).

The Flayed One 10-11-2008 04:16 PM

Rikki. Yes, spelled like a girl or the mongoose. Usually when people read my name before they see me, they assume I'm female because of the spelling. For some reason, it seems weird to people that it's not short for Richard. I guess I never thought about just Rikki being a weird name until people started asking.

I used to get all kinds of butt-hurt when I was younger if people misspelled my name or called me Rick. It really doesn't matter to me much anymore after having the mistakes for 30 years. At my current job, my name is spelled Ricky on my paychecks. As long as the bank cashes it, I really don't mind.

As far as nicknames, the only one that has stuck for any amount of time (going on 10 years, actually) is Rikki Krakk Whore. Yeah, I know, now you have the song going through your head using my name. It started when I was young. I started playing the original Soul Blade, and kept getting the crap kicked out of me. So I practiced for day and night, and got good enough that anyone I knew who played me could barely get a hit in. My cousin started saying that he hated playing Sueng Mina on "Rikki Krakk" and the name has stuck with close friends.

I like the name Rikki, spelling and all. It's cool and unique.

You've never pushed or been pushed to be called Rikki-O? (Like Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky).

Not really. I had one girlfriend who mentioned the movysie to me, which was cool because she wasn't a horror/splatter fan at all. Her parents used to own a video store, though, so she ended up watching it.

I really never petitioned for any nickname. Rikki has always been fine with me:)
