Horror films with artist's as important characters
I work in an Art Dept., and I had an idea last Halloween to
show a series of horror films in which an artist is one of the main characters. Some of the movies I came up with were: Color Me Blood Red Peeping Tom Bucket of Blood House With the Laughing Windows Track of the Vampire I'd like to try to add to this list but I'm struggling. I'm sure there have to more horror films which have artists in them but that criteria is sort of hard to look up, so i thought perhaps a forum would be a better approach. Any suggestions from any of you seasoned horror fans would be appreciated. I also prefer older, campy films, but I realize I can't be too picky. The beatnik poet description of artist's superiority to other humans in Bucket of Blood is absolutely hilarious! Thanks. |
driller killer ...
or was he a musician ? been a while |
eyes of laura mars (she designed window displays - an artist of sorts i suppose)
|
You beat me to it. He was an artist. He hated the band that was always practicing.
|
House of Wax? He made wax dummies....

er...type that |
Spiral. The main character is an artist and the film centers around his artwork.
check out the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9_NZ4z2-G4 |
Portrait of Dorian Grey would be a good candidate as well.
The focus is on the PAINTING- not the artist. |
the Mist ... the dad was an artist
really didnt have anything to do with the movie though |
Spiral looks like a good one! Thanks!
|
House of Wax...alright, that fits! Thank you for the suggestion.
Driller Killer? it fits but I don't like that kind of horror film |

Hmm... Well, his wife.. No.... damn. |
2 evil eyes - Harvey Keital's character was an artist/photographer.
The Hand - Michael Cain is a comic artist Dr Terror's House of terror features Chris Lee as an Art critic who runs over an artists hand. |
Wow, thanks for all of the great suggestions!
|
Bedlam and Isle of the Dead are inspired by paintings and Irina in Cat People draws. Also, there's a great segment in Tales from the Hood revolving around a kid's drawing.
|
Paper House has a kid whose drawing come to life too.

i have season one on DVD now - brings back a lot of old memories |
You gotta see "Playgirl Killer," it is an awesome whacko artist movie. William ("Blood Feast") Kerwin as the kooky painter who kills his models because THEY WON'T SIT STILL! It's actually quite flipped-out.
Also, Neil Sedaka has an extended cameo, and he sings a song at a dance party. You gotta love that. |
artists in horror
Thanks for the replies everyone. Now to see if I can find them.

Put yourself or your friends in!! :)
There are only scenes from Aliens (the original), The Fly, Jeepers Creepers 2, The Omen (new one), Child's Play, and The Hills Have Eyes 2 (sorry, no major classics other than maybe Aliens) And just in case someone thinks this is spam just because I joined today, I won't post this as a link. dareyoutowatch.com After the little intro, there's a link at the corner of the screen that says "insert yourself into the terror". The rest should be pretty self explanatory. Worth a quick laugh if you're bored |
did anyone have a chance to try it yet? just wondering what people think
|
murder-set-pieces - Nick Polumbos gross out exploitation film about a fashion photographer killer.
Stendhal Syndrome - Deals with a psychosomatic illness that makes people dizzy and suffer hallucinations when exposed to art. Decent Argento flick. |
Though most of these are thrillers, they featured art or artists prominently- the Sketch Artist series, Sudden Impact, Tattoo, Night of the Generals, The Train, Blow-Up, I Shot Andy Warhol, House of Horrors, Chamber of Horrors, Spellbound(artistic backdrops by Dali), the films of Ralph Bakshi, and the recent Chemical Wedding(man is possessed by Aleister Crowley, who when not pretending to be the devil, dabbled in art and even designed his own Tarot cards).
On the bio side, the 2 films about Frida Kahlo, whose work leans heavily towards surreal fantasy. Love is the Devil was about Francis Bacon, whose art can be viewed as horrific(the film makers didn’t have permission to photograph his work, so recreated it for the film). The Mondo films usually featured segues into the art world(usually to squeeze in shots of nude models and give the film some kind of artistic merit for those pesky censors). Ken Russell did a lot of over the top biopics about various musical artists, usually highly fantastical. The films of Luis Bunuel and Jean Cocteau could be viewed as works of art by themselves, as they both were founding fathers of the Surrealist movement. Photographer Leni Reifenstahl’s Triumph of the Will and Olympia, though not horror, could both be viewed with evil undercurrents as both films are masterpieces of propaganda for the Nazi regime. Phantom of the Opera was about a composer, Vertigo had a clothes designer, Rear Window a photographer. In the Silence of the Lambs films, Dr. Lector not only appreciated art, but was an artist. And even in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you had sculptural pieces(those bones were assembled by artisans). |
I don't think anybody has mentioned Genesis yet. It's a Nacho Cerdà film about a sculptor using his art as a means to honor his recently deceased wife. Watch it if you can find it, it's only 30 minutes long and has no dialog but it's got some great imagery and manages to be a somewhat powerful little movie.

Vault of Horror.
One of the segments in this Amicus anthology features Tom Baker as an artist who combines voodoo with his painting to bring down those who wronged him. |
totally ignored :( haha
I was just wondering if anyone else had any better luck with it than me. I've tried a few different scenes with different pictures and it all comes out looking the same to me... |

Thought of another one- Diary of a Madman, with Vincent Price. He's a sculptor.

Hope everyone had a nice and safe Halloween!

Is there some reason you only post in this thread?
|
Could be a vampire who hasn't been invited into the other threads.
