epic scenes.
what are some of you're favorite epic scenes? Im talking about perfect film making scenes. ones where the musical score, the acting, and the direction all fit together perfectly and send chills down your spine.
The final scene in The Dark Knight when Batman is running from the cops with the intense musical score and Gary Oldman's voice in the background "He is not the hero Gotham City needs, but one it deserves. He is a Dark Knight" or something like that. both Times i've seen it I got chills. Every single time I see the epic showdown at the end of the Good The Bad And The Ugly with Morricone's epic score I get shivers. The scene in raging bull when Deniro's in the jail cell is highly powerful as well, mostly because of lighting and Deniro's flawless acting. anyone have any favs like these? |
When travolta shoots the guy in the car in Pulp Fiction.
|
I'd consider that more of a funny (well done none the less) than epic scene.
|
I don't know if I'd consider it epic, but the hallway scene in Exorcist III always sends a chill down my spine. The way it's filmed, the absolute lack of music. It just lulls you into a comfort zone and then destroys you at the end. It helped make it my favorite movie of all time.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The scene when McMurphy started the commentary for the world series & spread the 'excitement' on others...that was mind blowing! And obviously the unforgettable ending scenes of this masterpiece enlightens the same class.
|
Robert Michum in Cape Fear where hes explaining what he did to his wife - great acting, chilling dialogue. Scary.

Will people please shut the faggety fuck up about this movie soon. My eyes has been fed up about it for a month now. When will you people get into your tiny sculls that this isn't a masterpiece. This isn't one of the wonders of the world. It's a freakin SUPER HERO MOVIE!!!! YOU PEOPLE ARE DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!! |
shut up. verbally attacking people because they like a movie is fucking stupid. sometimes I'll give people shit if they like or dont like something, but I dont go that far, its completely unnecessary.

.............. I want you banned.. |

it wasnt a superhero movie .. it was a well done crime drama film. it's the 'Scarface' for this decade. |

So it comes to this...... they got you too, Urge.. :( Scarface I can easily understand. It's got one of the all time bad asses in it. And the story is almost flawless. The Dark Knight... It's got Heath as The Joker. I think that might be pretty much all people will remember about this movie in 20 years. And yes, I'm pretty sure about that statement. I'm not just saying this to be a jerk. |
I agree and dissagree with you Angra. I'm getting a bit bored of constantly hearing about it. It's a good film but it is getting a bit tiresome now. And although up near there, I wouldn't put it in the top 20 films of the past say, 70 years. But it is still a brilliant film and was more than just a superhero movie. It wasn't about cool superhuman powers etc. It was about insanity and chaos.
Also, when did you and mothman start hating each other? |
Quote:
Just now. And if you go outside and you see Mothman, I want you to shoot that fucking thing. And if it's got Dave Coulier's hair on it, I want you to shoot that thing of first, then shoot Mothman. |

because his performance was deserving of all the hype. I was prepared to be let down - and was blown away. I dont care if it was batman, or little miss sunshine, or driving miss daisy ... heath ledger gave a huge performance in this film. take him out and you still have a very cool film... al ot of other things were going on with a lot of other good actors ... but Heath as the Joker was mesmerising. this is why people still remember midnight cowboy (dustin hoffman) this is why people still remember Angel Heart (mickey rourke) this is why people still remember the Maltese Falcon (bogart) memorable movies are made memorable by memorable performances .. your statement may very well be true - but its also true of a lot of other really good movies that people still remember. |
This gives me an idea for an interesting thread.

Quote:
Agreed. 100%. I just don't see what all the hype, especially on a horror site like this, is coming from. Sure it was pretty good, but compared to LOTR it was fairly forgettable. And i didn't see as much hype about LOTR when those movies were coming up. |
Not that I take small things like this personal. But I wish you will all rotten in hell. :D :p

- The final showdown in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (like MM said).
- The final scene in The French Connection (gunshot). Sends chills up my spine. - The Kurtz execution in Apocalypse Now (a la 'The End' by The Doors). - The scene in Goodfellas where De Niro snaps inside and we know it by a twinkle in his eye ('Sunshine of your Love') ---------------------------------- Angra- epic fail. :) |
The car chase and ending to Dark Knight are the most recent ones that come to mind.
And the scene from John Carpenter's Halloween after Laurie finds the bodies and is leaning against the wall when Michael's mask slowly fades in from the door behind her. |
the scene in the Thing where all hell breaks loose in the operating room
the final battle in Equilibrium (and the 1st gunfight) Lair of the White Worm - hugh grant cutting the vampire in half - then spinning into a drum kit - in slow motion - in the middle of a midieval castle Phantasm .. the 'living photograph' of the tall man reacting to the cold of the ice cream truck An american werewolf in London - the transformation to the song Bad Moon Rising tons more |
The ending of Harold & Maude.
It just screws with your head. The beginning of The Evil Dead. It just screws with your head. |

Also, a very powerful scene from Platoon :- (***WARNING - HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD***) - When Willem Dafoe mows down a bunch of vietcongs and walks back with a grin to Tom Berenger, who isn't smiling at all, and has THE look on his face...Dafoe's grin fades, and he instantly realises. Before he could even think, Berenger shoots... ...and when they are all air-lifted in a chopper, out comes Dafoe, running through the trees, chased by a thousand vietcongs...clutching his chest and running for his life...they look on down helplessly, while he raises his arms towards them...just as bullet after bullet starts to thud into his body... ...god, that is such a HUGE scene, in every sense of the word. I got the goosebumps just typing it out, thinking about it. |
this scene from Outlaw Josey Whales is so ice cold. i love it, great lighting too.

The ear scene in Reservoir Dogs.
Also, when Henry Fonda guns down the family in the beginning of Once Upon the Time in the West. I think westerns and asian movies tend to have a lot of "epic" scenes. I can name a number from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero, House of Leaves, Curse of the Golden Flower, etc. |
They probably don't get any more "epic" than the chariot race scene from "Ben Hur".

- The final showdown in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. OR - The climactic showdown in Kung Fu Hustle. Take your pick - either one, I win. :D |
V, great description on the scene in pLatoon, I probably would not have remembered it if you hadnt mentioned it, but that scene is one that stays with you in great detail for the rest of your life. Another one from Platoon is the group walking away as the village burns in the background and pockets of weapons explode. Everyone is devestated by what just happened, except for the jerkoffs who are just pissed at everything.
Hall of mirrors in Equilibrium. The puppy gunfight too. The climax of 28 Days Later. The moddy guitar music overlaying the rain, all filmed in high speed digital giving it an unreal and hyper real feel at the same time. The Infected tearing around the mansion, juxtaposed with Jim running around like an angel of death, culminating with one of the most brutally satisfying kills ever. The closing fight of Fellowship of the ring. I love it when aragorn is facing the crowd of uruk hai, and you dont doubt for a second that he is going to come out on top. |

it was the 1st war film i saw that conveyed that experience - that it wasnt one clearly marked side shooting at another clearly marked side ... that at times it was a giant lethal clusterfuck that would take a miracle to make it out of alive. |

Platoon is one o fthose rare movies where the whole damn thing was practially an epic scene. Even the one where they are burning barrels of human waste. It was the pinacle of Oliver Stone's carreer in my book.

i use it all the time myself |

When they come across one of their own by the river, throat slit and layed up in front of the tree... When the fat dude gets shot during night-shift, and is bleeding torrents among the confusion and chaos... The kids crying behind-the-scene as Charlie Sheen chances upon them (and his fellow soldiers) in sheer horror and disgust..."She's a fucking human being man!" and gets spat upon... ...Its not a war movie by any means, its an exercise, in identification. Its basically a journey of every human on this planet, in discovering himself. There is so much unsaid and being conveyed in currents throughout the movie (specially through Sheen's describing to his Grandma)..."We didn't fight the enemy, we fought ourselves..." ...goodness, if ever they handed out a prize for the Best Epic Movie Ever Made, Platoon would be my immediate choice. And a strong contender for the prize. |
