Conan will be back...without Arnie
New Line Cinema is poised to remake the Schwarzenegger classic “Conan the Barbarian” following Warner losing the rights to the legendary literary series.
What a journey this movie has had. At one stage original ‘Conan’ director John Milius wanted to bring Schwarzenegger back for a third film (titled ‘King Conan’) then Warners decided they didn’t want that and dropped both Milius and, well, any link to the Arnie films, in favour of a straight-up remake. Larry and Andy Wachowski and Robert Rodriguez took turns developing it. Rodriguez got closest but left the project for "Grindhouse." Boaz Yakin was hired last year to start again. Warners had a spring deadline to be in production but balked because it didn't have a script in which it was confident. Rights-holder Paradox Entertainment, which had extended its original option agreement three times, declined another extension. "We have great respect for Warner Bros., but after seven years, we came to the point where we needed to see progress to production," Paradox's Fredrik Malmberg said. After posting a bid of mid-six against seven figures for an 18-month option with one extension, the studio entered into negotiations after CAA staged an auction for rights holder Paradox Entertainment. The property drew the interest of several studios and monied producers including Hollywood Gang's Gianni Nunnari and Millennium Films. New Line has to start from scratch on the project because the Warner Bros. own the rights to all drafts of the new “Conan” movie. http://www.moviehole.net/news/200706...an_movies.html Any guesses to who the lead will be? Your guess is as good as mine. |
It'll be The Rock
I need to make a few calls... sounds like a great writing assignment! |

Its apparent WB dont want to give out the draft for a remake, so I m guessing New Line will have a new plotline for Conan now. All the best, Sean! Hope they give it to you...I am sure you will do great justice to it...you have a great vision for stuff, and might be perfect for this one. |
Why don't they just clone Schwarzenegger already so they can do this and make another 'Terminator' sequel ? :D
Remakes.... more damn remakes ! |

No surprise there. When there's nothing left to remake, they'll just start remaking the remakes. How many times has 'Invasion Of The Body Snatchers' been done now ? 3 ? 4 ?
Worst part is Lion's Gate is one of the companies we're looking to sell our movie to this summer for distribution. ugh ! I feel so dirty now I need to shower :D |
They killed my childhood memories!
|
Such a big industry with so many fine-assed scripters and directors, cant they think of one unique story between em? I am really surprised...and disappointed.
We still have the odd 28 Days/Weeks Later or Grindhouse. 1408 is another recent goodie (apart from being a story adaptation). There are some, but very few and far between. Yet, associating that with a multi-billion dollar industry with literally millions of script writers and directors, those are pretty poor statistics. The audiences should just say NO to remakes. That might compel em to come up with some original stuff. |
Don't get me started again !
I should start spamming my flick now against my own better judgment. At least it's original and I didn't just sign up here to post once about it and leave. I feel like I'm stuck in a bad 'ABC Afterschool Special' now :D |
This has "It will blow big time" written all over it.

New Conan movie directed by....
Ok time to hear people complain so.... Looks like Rob Zombie may be directing the new Conan movie.
http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/11105 I like his movies, but others don't, so what do you guys thing? |
Ive liked all three of his movies thus far. Im sure they'll be posts about him intergrating white trash-ness and 70's music into this. I however think it'll be interesting to see what he does with it.
|
YEah I really don't see what the big deal is, its just5 his style of film, which for the most part, he is still developing. He has only done 3 movies, and they are all good, in my mind, but even the people who don't like it have to admit that he did them well. And thats just him starting off, I think they have been getting better since the first, so who knows when he is going to peak.

I've liked his other films but I can't wait to see what he does without the use rednecks as a possibility.
|
Hmm, not actually what I expected, because from what I've seen, alot of people been flaming him over his movies.
|
he only took a meeting about Conan
so did Neil Marshall and Frank Darabont |
Ooooo...
I would be all over it if Neil Marshall did it. |

March 10, 2008
IGN Movies recently broke the news that British filmmaker Neil Marshall is in the running to direct Lionsgate's new Conan movie, and now the Doomsday director himself has confirmed that he has indeed met with the producers about helming the sword & sorcery adventure. "I had one meeting, and I haven't heard back," Marshall told IGN in telephone interview. "I know they're working on the script now," he adds. We also asked Marshall, whose two previous films have featured strong female characters, how the estrogen factor might figure into Conan, were he to take the reigns of the project. "I don't really know yet. I'd quite fancy just doing a film with blokes though," the director joked. And if he were to land the gig, Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) wouldn't necessarily be influenced by the Robert E. Howard character's comic book history. "It's no bearing on the comic strips at all," Marshall said in a conversation with MoviesBlog.MTV.com. "I'm more influenced by [Frank] Frazetta's fantasy art," said Marshall, who described himself as "a huge fan" of 1981's Conan the Barbarian. Marshall envisions Conan as "a rip-roaring adventure, within a semi-historical world," but cautions fans that he might not end up getting the job. |
how the fuck are you gonna have Conan without Arnie.
just doesn't work. |
First look at CONAN!
|
I'm getting really tired of all these "re-imaginings".
Cool poster though. |

No Arnie = No Conan
|
I've been pretty excited about this. I'm actually a huge Conan fan as I used to read my dad's Conan books when I was a kid. There really is a lot they could do with this with a better budget than with the Arnold Conan movies.
They're also supposedly re-doing Red Sonja. |

If this is more Robert E. Howard like, it would be great. But I'd really like to see a Solomon Kane movie.

isnt that being made as well right now ? |
So who's Conan then?

Robert E. Howard was a writer in the late 20's and early 30's who invented the whole Sword and Sorcery genre that was popular in the 80's movies. His also incidentally was friends with H.P. Lovecraft. Howard's greatest character was Conan, a wandering barbarian, kind of an anti-hero, who encountered evil wizards, monsters, tavern wenches, and the like. |
