well. . . it has seemed oddly quiet around here and I'm beginning to see why.

yesterday my evil alter ego - HIS HERALD - overtook me and began posting innocuous though slighly irrelevant posts about HIS coming (some of you may remember my friend Herald as a fake avatar I used to announce my return from one of my periodic slumbers).

well - I'll admit it was mainly just screwing with people in the hopes of livening things up around here. I'll return to the fact that nothing was offensive, obscene or even really attacking (just lots of 'HE is coming' stuff). and i even tried to make it vaguely relevant to the threads.

but it does speak, in my mind at least, to the lethargic nature of this place (once you could be sure that any post would get five or six responses within an hour or so - these days i can log in throughout the day and see barely any movement). i am not in favor of obnoxious trolls - but it does seem that the rules of what counts as 'obnoxious' have become strikingly strict.

so - if some mod wants to ban me for my little alter-ego prank - feel free. after three years on this forum, i can't really say i'm sure i'll be here much longer anyway.

oh - one more thing -

this is what the board said when i tried to log in as herald:

"You have been banned for the following reason:
No reason was specified.

Date the ban will be lifted: Never"

i particularly like the 'no reason was specified'

Hey, I'm here! I just haven't been watching movies. I have one coming from Netflix soon - "Thr3e". If anyone has seen it, I'd appreciate your views.

So, Zero, watcha been up to? I went to Atlantic City this past weekend (had a free room at Harrah's). Didn't win much - but I came home with money so that's good - and the food sucked. Next time I'll go to the boardwalk side!

I knew it was a regular trying to create some kind of spark around here....I forgot about your alter ego. I did try to warn you to keep it in just a couple of threads, knowing what may happen.

This place always goes through "down" days.......it just seems to be lasting a bit longer this time. But if all the good posters [ yourself being one of them ]get bored and leave then we will never get back to the "good old days."

I have been busy with film work lately, and being the humorous fellow I am, in my egocentric way I was fantasizing that my being away was the real reason behind poster lethargy here. And who knows, that may even be the reason! Who's to say that poster lethargy and ego-reinforcement cannot coexist?

Work has been a Hell recently.

This place has been a respite.

Zero - You've been here a while. I love your posts. I love your monkey (that's right - I said it).

But if you're looking to add more to the forum (and I agree that it's been dull, DULL here recently), I don't think that this is the "more" that you're after. Please don't encourage the moron masses and obnoxious newbs to do the same. Else I'll have to go on a killing spree and, well, work just won't allow it.

Zero, if you go, how many animal related posters will be left to comfort me? As far as I can see, the only animal-type posters are the monkey and the ferret. If you go, I will hunt you down! Just like Bwind did in HDC the Movie part 7ero. Seriously, I know what you mean and it has become a lot more strict around here these days, but we're still recovering from all of the renob and Dave stuff. Yes it was ages ago but still, with more new people turning up and every once in a while, them sounding oddly familiar, it could have even been a case of mistaken identity. Maybe whichever MOD it was thought you were one of the troll kings! Don't get too annoyed about it and just have fun with what we've got for the moment. Things will brighten.

Where is this? I feel so left out.

I've noticed that as well. I'm on here almost every day. Yet lately, when I sign on, there is barely a new post in the previous 4-5 hours or more. What adds to the weirdness, there will be 7-8 people on, but no one is posting.

Have we drained our forum of topics? Or have we simply become to dry to all of the trolling? As much as it was annoying, it seemed to be almost more fun back when we had trolls coming in masses. Not only did it lighten the mood and give us a use for shallow, insulting humor. It gave our regulars a way to relieve a little steam and cheer up after saying "STFU N00B!".

Our forum is dying.

Oh, and a good example of this, Drac's birthday thread has less than 10 responses. That isn't the norm.

for the record i'm not saying i'm planning on leaving or anything. . . its more a matter of registering disappointment in the state of things and, in fairness, what seemed fairly draconian measures taken by mods. His Herald was a bit annoying but if that constitutes 'unreasonable behavior' then I think we've drawn that circle a bit too tight.

maybe recent 'trolls' have made security too tight - but i think if every level of banter, back-and-forth, and annoyance is immediately erased then it leaves conversations that - as many do now - just dwindle to nothing.

i figured HIS HERALD would rile people up (and maybe in deference to ChronoG it was a bad way to spark things up) - but I was shocked to see him banned and all threads erased in less than 8 hours (after only about 10 posts and nothing blatantly offensive).

to be honest, given the total absence of most mods, i only assume this was Austin (he's the only one i've seen anywhere near the place in months) and i'm not picking a fight with him but just wondering how things got to the moribund state they currently occupy.

So you are saying, we are basically Moderator free, but we have strict rules?

I have to agree that. though they were annoying, things were a lot more interesting when the trolls were here. IT seems to be very quiet and nothing grabs my eye. And, not that they're no good, all the threads seem to be either tournaments or "the last...you...", which don't really get many responces other than film, book or song titles or place names. But we have to decide, which is better?

I like that things are mostly relevant right now. All the trolls just drove more people away than the recent silence. I don't know about you guys, but I've just been busy lately. I come on here once or twice a day and I post a few things but I don't have the time to discuss or debate anything too in depth.

What really gets my goat is that I can see all these people are looking at the threads, but none comment. Sme threads have over a hundred views an less than 10 posts.

Do we really need trolls for this forum to stay alive and partying?

I personally wouldn't mind as i love being mean to people, but i would hate to think that's why people come here.


I think this forum needs more regular posters. Like there used to be in a not so distant past.

I used to come here to laugh my ass off for hours. I don't laugh so much anymore.

Maybe it's because of the be-nice-to-the-new-members policy.

I think a lot of the neglecting members felt the same way..

I'm all for being mean to the new members if they deserve it. some people start off here on a really good note and I would hate to see those people scared away.

If they are scared away, they won't be around long anyway. I got the treatment somewhat when I got here, and most of the regulars were the same. That's what kept it active and a big family.

That right has been taken away. :(

i'm not threatening to leave (that's too melodramatic for me and i've got about 900 posts or so until my big 5555, which may actually be my end but we'll see)

and, i'm not criticizing zwoti or austin or anyone.

i think there are two not entirely connected things here-

one is a general comment that the place is lethargic (i'd say 'dead' but that's so cliched around here). now I KNOW that the place has gone through lulls in the past (i didn't just join yesterday) but this has been fairly prolonged lull and I think its partly people being busy but also a bigger problem of very little of interest being said. I agree with Ferret - half the time I log on, search the various forums and find virtually nothing i want to respond to. if i do, often just out of pure boredom, its usually inane and irrelevant (which makes me wonder why zero doesn't get banned)

the other comment is just my surprise that His Herald was banned and erased so immediately. it was like 10 posts in about four different threads - i went off to bed and woke up the next morning expecting/hoping for a bit of a dust-up to have ocurred and my only fear was that someone would remember my trick from before (which went on for days and had about 40 posts) and ruin my prank. i never suspected such an immediate and sever response.

that's not criticizing the mods - hell it's their job and none of my business - but just expressing my concern.

so, what to do about the state of HDC - - - honestly i don't know. it seems to me in the past things would spark up either by a group of newbies who were lively (i think i came in around the same time as maggie and IA75 and some others and things seemed to kind of pick up for awhile) or a troll comes by and sparks fire and fury. hell, i remember IA75 and i used to periodically plan to have public feuds and then start threats insulting each other for fun and amusment of all - but now he's gone and i think if i start throwing insults there might just be an empty space in threads where a monkey used to be.

but, here i think Ferret is right again (truly words i never thought i'd type) - there are lots of people watching/viewing and little being written or responded to.

but - that's my two-cents. i'm not trying to condemn anyone or start anything (i tried that yesterday to no avail)
