Suspiria
...I remember hearing good things about it...saw it cheap and picked it up a while back, and have been toying with the notion of watching it.
So, is it any good? Anyone wanna tell me a little about it without fucking up the plot entirely? |
Interestingly shot and full of beautiful colors and some nice kills. The plot can drift and the pacing can be a bit slower than some would like but I think it ends up being a great film. Wonderful music too...

Personally, I love it. It isn't Argento's best, and the acting is atrocious, but it really is a fun ride.
And it has the creepiest horror score of all time, hands down, thanks to Goblin. |
The best slasher made, IMO...with a lot of inventive kills and coupled with an awesome soundtrack by Goblin. The pacing can be a bit awkward to anyone who isnt familiar with Argento, but its a brilliant movie.
Watch it and lets see what you think of it, Cheebs. |
I thought it was drastically over-rated. It was too artistic and slow paced for my taste. I found it rather boring. The music was eerie though.

it's a really great film, i think. as mostly everyone above already said, it's extremely artistic and compositionally incredible. the whole thing is just really stylish and a lot of fun to watch. the only complaint is that it's somewhat anticlimactic, but not even enough to make it upsetting or anything. but yeah, definitely give it a watch.
actually, my signature is my favorite still from the film. |
loves it :D :D
|
I've only watched it for the first time about a week ago, but I really enjoyed Suspiria. I think Argento did a great job on it. So much so, I ordered Deep Red and Inferno from Amazon today! :D
|
I'm an artsy kinda gal so I loved it. Some of the gore is pretty cheesy but I think it was wonderful.

It's like a nightmare version of Snow White...and one of the last films shot in three-strip technicolor.
|
Great horror flick, very well made. The music, as many have said, adds a lot to it. It also has my all-time favorite horror trap, involving razor wire-anyone who's seen it knows what I'm talking about.
|
its one of the greats but only in the minds of horror afficionados. visually stunning with a great story but the kills are the thing that stand out for me. when you see the first kill you'll be bowled over. the movie is pure argento so if you like his other stuff you'll be in heaven.

The acting was great, as was the visual imagery. I can see why these films by Argento are held in such high regard. |
Glad to hear you liked it! The puppet scene always makes me wonder if it was the inspiration for Saw...

some fans view suspiria as being a "giallo"
i once read a giallo as being " a murder mystery done in the style of a horror film" given that ; i think of suspiria as being a" horror film "done in the style of a "giallo " [if that makes any sence] |

yeah they are murder mysteries albeit extremely violent murder mysteries. i know a lot of you already know this but for those that don't; the popular italian best selling murder mystery novels of the 50's and 60's (i think) were predominantly published with yellow covers. the subsequent fad for italian directors to make movies in the style of these books needed a name. hence, the italian word for yellow was employed. so, by definition a giallo can only be murder mystery. just cause argento, for example, makes a movie, doesn't mean it has to fall into that category, it could be horror. basically, if the movie flows like ruth rendell but with extremely violent murders its giallo. horror and giallo are mutually exclusive. IMO. almost forgot, suspiria is a horror, tenebrae isn't

i think giallos are a beautifully unique form of movie making
i wouldnt like to call it a "sub-genre" it would be like calling "rock and roll" a sub-genre of "blues ","skiffle",and"country" by the way ,we seemed to have kept the "rock"element ...wat happened to "roll" music ? |

Giallo predominantly lasted for about 15 years, and was spawned off of the mystery genre and the horror genre. How can you call that a genre? It fits perfectly into the category of "subgenre". |
good point !
