Fight Scene Tournament
This tournament will have a field of 32, standard rules for HDC tournaments. I'll post the fight, the movie it's from, a link to a video for the fight, and a short write-up about the fight. Next post is the first match

Round 1: Match 1
Freddy Krueger vs. Jason Vorhees Movie: Freddy vs. Jason http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szL7rjMvKn0 Not the greatest as far as fights go, and the movie wasn't even as good as some Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm St. movies. But they did exactly what (IMO) they should have done with this fight. Freddy out-thinking and being quicker than the lumbering strength-based Jason. And the weapon swap at the end shows more cleverness than I would have given the movie credit for. Plus, I felt required to have some horror representation in the tournament. VS Daniel vs. Johnny Movie: The Karate Kid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NfkH3Q4JOQ Again, not the greatest fight, even of its kind, but the lack of fancy technical finess is made up for by emotional investment. It's like the final fight in Rocky, but it's a lot better a fight than the Rocky fights where the punches obviously never made contact. Also made famous the oft-overused Crane Pose. |
Daniel vs. Johnny

Round 1: Match 2
Charlie Yu Tao vs Yuen Tak/Yu Ching-Chuen vs Yu Yung-Sheng Movie: My Young Auntie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqn5DQ9Jhzk The goofy Kung Fu equivalent of "my dad could beat up your dad." The silly bragging between Tao and Tak is funny, although I do think that on occasion the fight just looks like they're doing really quick poses. Other than that, a very good climactic fight. VS Kham vs. Everybody in his way Movie: The Protector http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K06wDn3XsZE Tony Jaa beats the everloving fuck out of people in a big elaborate 4 minute tracking shot. The way he fights his way up the big winding staircase reminds me of similar levels in video games, which gets the scene points from me because I like those games. There's some stuff that makes you go "bah, they did that with the editing" until you remember that, no, there is no editing. |
Tony Jaa is the greatest ever.
No doubt. |
Kham vs everybody in his way
|
any single one of those dudes from The Young Auntie could kick the shit out of Tony Jaa.
the 3 minute long sequence is impressive no doubt, but the protector is god awful. i walked out of that film. so drawn out. The Young Auntie for sure. (ong bak was a a different story though.) |

Round 1: Match 3
Zhang vs. Yeoh Movie: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OxQ-2gR1DU In a movie initially lauded, now decried for its fight scenes full of flying around and fantasy, this fight is more grounded in reality than any other in the movie. Granted, that doesn't say a whole lot, but in a movie where people are running up plant stems and jumping from rooftop to rooftop, this fight stands out. VS Cunningham vs. Rob Roy Movie: Rob Roy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVaslN1NiT0 A great movie swordfight if ever there was one. It may not have a lot of visually fancy choreography, but it has a greate sense of realism and psychology to it. They pause, and wait, think the fight out, they run out of breath because swordfighting is tiring. They don't just galavant into it because it's a fight to the death. And rather than the fight being either really close the whole way through or the villain beats up the hero until the hero arbitrarily wins, the better swordfighter gets the upper hand for the great majority of the fight, and then the hero wins in a somewhat ingenious move that might not have worked if the villain had chosen a different sword. This is one of the two really great swordfights I've seen in movies. |
Tough choice...

Round 1: Match 4
Two crippled Asians vs. an able-bodied Asian Movie: Crippled Masters http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bgqlfBlABY Sorry for the lack of names, but I watched this without subtitles or a dub. The goofy-ass over the top concept of the movie allows for some really good fight choreography that can't be gotten in other movies. VS Edward Norton vs. Edward Norton Movie: Fight Club http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2ENGnluouc Could've been lame slapstick like Jim Carrey's self-fight in Liar Liar. But Norton takes a hell of a beating from himself. |
Edward Norton
|
Big chop socky fan but I never much cared for Crippled Avengers.

Round 1: Match 5
Chun Li vs. Vega Movie: Street Fighter II http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZANQrCqht84 There aren't many good fights in animated movies. There, I said it. I don't know what it is, but the hand to hand combat is either in short bursts too quick to be much of a fight scene in and of its self, the sword fights usually are edited so you can't actually see the fighting, and the gun fights, while usually okay, usually aren't the only thing going on, and there's too much intercutting to get a good feel of the fight. Not a knock on animation, obviously, but it's a fight scene tournament, and there aren't many good animated ones. But this one is a surprisingly good one. The street fighters, usually in more open surroundings, have a fight in decidedly more cramped surroundings. Well animated, good psychology to it with Chun-Li attacking Vega's face, and Guile looks like a useless bufoon. VS The Wild Bunch vs. The Mexican Army Movie: The Wild Bunch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OLvEJ3kP1s This is what got me to like westerns. Pike's "Let's go." and the long walk where you know what's coming and you know how it'll turn out, until Requiem for a Dream, this scene was one of two that made me come closest to crying during a movie. All that emotional build up to a really fucking epic gun battle. |
