What Do You Do To Stay Sharp?

Like many here, I fancy myself rather bright, but sometimes I feel a little less-than-brilliant. It's easy to fall into a rut and not challenge oneself and an unchallenged mind atrophies quickly.

I do crosswords from time-to-time, friends of mine do Sudoku - but I can't get into that.

Lately I've decided to commit Poe's Tell Tale Heart to memory. After two weeks of effort I can recite about 1/3 of it verbatim.

How about you?

Drink beer until I puke into my shoes.

I believe in the buffalo theory

A herd of buffalo can only move as
fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the
slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural
selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and
health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the
weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate
as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we
know, kills brain cells. But naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest
brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates
the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient
machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

Word puzzles for me, mostly. Cryptograms, crosswords. timed frameworks.

I do that one too. Wonderful rationalization there, Newb. Won't feel so bad about downing that 6-pack tonight.:p

Vodstok 06-21-2007 04:46 PM

I'm sharpening my wits with a fosters can tonight :)

One o fmy other one's (and Rod is going to flinch on this), I play about 10 minutes of something violent on the computer. Gets the adrenalin going, narrows my focus; kind of like a cup of coffee (FEAR is a good one for this).

Other than that, when I have time, I come up with little programming challenges for myself (how geeky is that?). It pays off though. I wanted to know if i could make a program to download pictures off the web, and I now have a program (that i willl sell someday) that can scrape all the pictures, videos, or whatever you want off of websites and download them. Kicks butt so far :)

novakru 06-21-2007 04:48 PM

Crosswords, reading non-fiction, playing mahjong on the 'puter.
Asking a stranger weird questions that require me to actually listen to them.

Oooh, that's really interesting. Any good stories there?

Always, uh, drink a lot of coffee. But not all the time...only in the morning.

If you act really stupid, your enemies will think you ARE stupid and will then reveal their strategy more quickly.

Wear a monkey mask in public at least once a day, it make you feel GOOD!

_____V_____ 06-21-2007 05:51 PM

Its a tough job I got, but between that and home...

I take time out to read aplenty. I do Sudoku regularly too (got it loaded on my cell also) and that keeps my brains ticking. Sometimes I try out the word puzzles, but that eventually stays half-solved (unless it is movie-based, but of course!)

Over the weekend, I sit together with friends and play some chess, and some trivia-based games, over beers.

And of course, I play games on my consoles and PC. Well, USED TO...anyway. And dont say that games dont help the wits, cuz more than once I have found myself feeling more sharper after playing a level of the odd Delta Force or Syphon Filter or F.E.A.R., etc.

You should give Sudoku a try, Rod. It actually helps. Try solving one within 30 minutes and you are a genius.;)

Kane_Hodder 06-21-2007 09:37 PM

Most of my spare time is consumed in reading. Whether it be articles in a mag, or books, or random stuff on the Internet, I always find something useful to read.
Keeps me on my toes and crams all sorts of knowledge into those little grey cells.

X¤MurderDoll¤X 06-21-2007 10:24 PM

I'm naturally sharp as a tack and never need to challenge my mind, no joke.

Read the underlying message there..."You have to agree with me suckers, else I ll pound you to a pulp to agree with me.";)

the implication there is that HDC is not a sufficient intellect stimulant. frankly, i'm shocked and hurt. how dare you.:D

hammerfan 06-22-2007 04:50 AM

I'm still working on my Veterinary Technician course. And, I have to say, it's not going well. I'm STILL on Biology and it's kicking my ass big-time! :(

toXsick 06-22-2007 06:07 AM

Writing fiction that requires lots of research keeps me pretty sharp, I guess. I do love a good crossword, buy I usually only do them on planes.

And if you travel internationally, then you know how on the ball you need to be at all times. Between scheduling, getting to and from, what you can wear and bring on, keeping your documents in order, collecting and organizing receipts...wow, I think I just talked myself out of my next trip. :o

azathoth777 06-22-2007 06:12 AM

Mostly by reading. I'm usually reading in my free time, and usually two books at a time. One fiction, one nonfiction and I switch back and forth as the mood hits me.

I write stories, scripts and esseys on random subjects. I like to read whatever I find interesting, wether it be on the net, a book, or even magazine. I dont usually do to much of these things as i got way to much video games and movies to occupy myself with. :)

horrorobsessed 06-25-2007 11:35 AM

crosswords

missmacabre 06-25-2007 06:15 PM

Every morning I doodle or draw something to wake up my mind. Other than that I read a lot, do crosswords every other day because I have to share the paper. I love sudoku puzzles but it's becoming an addiction.

Dante'sInferno 06-25-2007 06:17 PM

Listen to music.

bwind22 06-26-2007 05:45 AM

I do Sodoku sometime, but generally I like to play thinking video games (Like Resident Evil or SimCity, etc...) . I play Spades, Dominos, Chess & Checkers on the computer sometimes too and LOTS of poker.

novakru 06-26-2007 03:53 PM
