console war - who will win?
right now the wii is dominating every other console system out there. do you guys and girls think that this trend will continue for the next few years or will the wii, like tickle me elmo die and then the ps3 will take over (saying that it actually starts selling) as the prime champ? or will the xbox360 continue to sell better then the ps3 and the wii, once the wii starts failing?
|
I think the wii will probably win, followed closely in sales by the xbox360. Ps3 will continue to be a joke.
|
I wouldn't be too sure, considering storage space the Wii just doesn't cut it. If games was gonna stay the same then the Wii could win. But just consider GTA IV will not get a decent port coz of the graphics restrictions, that is within the first year. It could be in trouble by this time next year if the ports stop and its only Nintendo software coming out.
The XBox 360 I will give it its due, it has done well. A large number of titles available and pretty good support from everywhere but Japan. But that is where alot of games are programmed add to this that if people do take advantage of the storage capacity of PS3's Blu-Ray (50gig+) then that is alot of DVD-9 disks. Add to this the fact that Microsoft are now releasing the 360 Elite, exactly the same console with an 80gig hard drive and an HDMI port on the back to support 1080p. This is supposed to costing around 20 dollars less than the 20gig PS3, it doesn't even have an HD-DVD / Blu-Ray drive. Currently PS3 network costs nothing. XBox Live in the UK costs around £50 per year, so if I had bought one and connected to the web for 4 years that would be nearly half the price of the PS3. Sony have bought out a machine at an hefty price, but have said that the console should be around for around 9-10 years. And this is not the first time that Sony have been called over priced and a joke, if you remember back to the Dreamcast it was said then. They dont need a DVD drive, its so much more money than the Dreamcast. All that is needed is 1 game that blows everything else away and everyone will jump back on the band wagon. At the moment programmers are just getting used to hardware, by this time next year you will see what the PS3 can do. I own a PS3 and for all of its faults, I like it. Yes some of the games on the 360 do look better, but they have had a year to get used to the 360 hardware. If i get around 7 years out of my PS3 I will be happy as I play it everyday and that works out to around 17p per day (which the last 2 Playstation consoles lasted over 7 years each). Personally I think no-one will win the next console war, it will be one way then the other. But if I get enjoyment out of what games and console I play then I win anyway. |

well,i have always owned nintendo consoles. but i dont have a Wii do i want one? not sure.
when i first saw the controller i thought that it was cool. then when i saw some of the games i thought the controller was just too gimicky. But i have only played the Excite truck game in the store so i don't know. I want a ps3 just for MGS$ and stranglehold but they maybe on xbox360. so i am waiteing to make my choice as i will only get one new system i acually dont have a ps2 and there are alot of games that i want silenthill and the mgs2 and 3 games devil may cry there is a lot, hoping the price will go down one more time. but based on the reviews of the wii games they dont seem that great' but i think it is something my wife would enjoy playing with me so that is a plus i really want a DS though anyone here have one |
Dispite how overatted it is you can't deny how big halo 3 will be
Xbox 360 barely scrapes by cause the Wii is huge...But the 360 will continue to be #1 BTW Wii has had some console shortage lately |
yeah, the wii has had some shortages lately. i have read reports that those shortages might keep up until 2008 or 2009. i would love to have a wii, but i have never seen one on a store self. so far every month this year the wii has dominated in sales. but with halo 3 coming out, that might stop that. but then again. with mario galaxy and metroid prime 3 coming out later this year as well. things will be interesting this fall.

The 360 will be the winner. But the Wii won't be far behind. The sales will be very even. I own a 360, And it is possibly the best console ever made, BESIDES the holy SNES ! I will buy a Wii in August hopefully. And PS3 will be used as a laughing device. Used only for the pure amusment of children & the elderly |
Dont count out the PS3 just yet, folks.
Agreed that its pricing and lack of games are cutting it down, but some of the major game-developing companies are making some really awesome games for the PS3. EA recently announced a slew of games exclusive for the PS3 which will bring out the full potential of the machine. Plus, Sony is seriously considering dropping the price by fall 2007 yet again so that the common man can afford it. And considering that the future of storage is gonna be Blu-Ray, its the cheapest Blu-Ray player available in the market today. Add 60GB of storage to it, bundled with a broadband connectivity, and you got a kickass console on your hands. |

I agree I would as well like to have a wii, I seen one on the store shelf when I went to look at it some guy came and got it  I do plan to get one however though whenever I see one next time, even if it mean I have to throw a little kid out of my way :D |
wow this is a toughy really.
When both companies did the launching and invited users to come along and test their new consoles..em afraid the xbox queue was much longer than wii. I think it was displayed on youtube somewheres..if i remember this correctly. Over here is a huge price war but this is happening with everything..ranging from consoles to petrol to bread. |
I think PS3 effectively priced itself out of the running. 360 has a lot of loyalty since it reached the market first, but I know more people who have or want a Wii.
(what the hell were they thinking when they named it Wii?) |
The PS3 sales will pick up eventually but their price, lack of exclusives, and the fact that they still don't have anything coming close a system seller is really hurting them right now.
|
As soon as they lower the price and bring out more games, the PS3 will be like the ps2. Dominant. The wii is shit in my opinion and the 360 is good. I'm just a sony guy though. Always have been, always will be.

Maybe you should try some others I really would like to get a Nintendo DS
And I just ordered a PS2 on ebay so what are some great games. I want to get the Hitman games that were not on the Gamecube, and the Silent Hill games. What else in good? |

Almost forget, it's odd that the biggest selling points for the PS3 are graphics and blu-ray. Blu-ray hasn't really hit it big and there are cross platform games like FEAR or Spiderman 3 in which the 360 version looks better for one reason or another (and in FEARs case it only has the loading times on the PS3). |
I'm with the 360 all the way.I've been a die hard Xbox fan since the launch of the original and always will be.To me I'll never pay for a PS3 and the Wii is fun for all of about 10 minutes as it gets boring very quickly.
|
XBOX 360. PS3 costs way to much, plus most of their games are going multi-platform.MGS4 might even do it.
|
The PS3 has really let sony down. I still favour them but wish they had thought about their marketing techniques
|
there is a game comming out on ps3 from freeradical it liooks really awsome. these are the guys that did Timesplitters 2 and alot were at RARE when they did GoldenEye on N64. the AI engine is pattented it will react to what you do in the game they are not sripted. It is called HAZE. But who knows may come out for xbox360 they way the ps3 is selling.

With Heavenly Sword, Final Fantasy XIII, Lair, Killzone 2, Ratchet & Clank and Grand Turismo 5 all exclusives.
Metal Gear Solid 4 maybe going multi format, but Konami have already said they will leave the PS3 version intact, so if they dumb it down (due to capacity of disk), it wont effect the PS3 release. Haze is coming out on PC & 360, but at a later date. There are many multi format games coming out, for all systems, but that doesn't mean that the PS3 is not getting the game. I will worry more when the games start being canceled. Sony made some bad comments that many people have taken to heart (never worked out if this was Sony or a bad translation), couple this with the lack of exclusives and you have why the console has not sold by the bucket load. I bought one on day of release in the UK, I waited 6 months longer than US and Japan. I have been happy with my console and whilst I know it was expensive (around £50 more expensive than the PS2 was at release), I know that if Sony release another console in 7 years time, it only cost me 19p per day. To me this is not expensive for the price per day and I dont need memory cards like the Wii (my friend owns one and likes retro gaming) or pay an online subscription like the 360. All the consoles are good in their own rights, with the competition between the consoles, the games within the next year will be amazing. |

i read an article on msnbc the PS3 sold 80000 consoles in April 2007 they were wondering how long it would take for Sony to drop below 100,000 units per month the Wii sold over 400,000 in the same time
i talked with some one at bestbuy said Sony should drop the bluray and use DVD ROM discs to bring the price down but i think it would be harder to sell a blu-ray model and a DVD ROM model side by side i plan on getting one in about 5 years |

Resistance: Fall of Man runs along quite happy at 60 fps, as does many of the titles on PS3 the only game I have heard it happening to was Call Of Duty 3, which like most converted games doesn't play that well (lazy programming), but still a launch game. People had nothing to compare the 360 to, it didn't matter that Halo 3 didn't come out on day of release. Nor that no real killer apps came out for a year Gears Of War (being the most talked about 360 game), came out November 21st 2006. It was the only next gen console out. Halo slipped again last November PS3 American & Jap release he said Halo would be out and ready. Now almost a year later Halo 3 is still not out, but the 360 had the year head start giving it some good games. Nintendo develiped nothing for the Game Cube for over a year in Japan giving them the ability to develope in house games comfortably. These are not excuses as Sony should have expected the competition to be good, just reasons why the competition is selling well. As far as I was aware Paper Mario was released in April, hence why figures was low (as will the slip when Halo 3 comes out and the others will slip when Gran Turismo 5 comes out on PS3). The only reason I said "dumb it down" is do the maths: 25-50gig onto DVD-9. Can't be done, so somethings will have to be changed (textures, AI, ETC), unless you don't mind 3-6 disk changes. Bash Sony all you want, but I know the PS3 will last me 7 years, once people start to see what the PS3 can do and the advantages of the storage capacity they will start to see things Sony's way. If you take XBox Live subscription for 7 years away from the original price of the PS3 you are left with $250 for a Blu-Ray player and console. You can take another $150 off if it goes the full 10 years that Sony have stated. For me I want any of the consoles to fail, more consoles = better games. It makes it so companies will try harder to fend off competition with better titles. |
Sony should NOT switch to DVD-ROM because the blu-ray technology they use has dropped for them substantially. Go look at reviews, not just FPS games, but many multi-platform games including Spiderman 3. Hell, the new Ninja Gaiden that just came out for the PS3 has "screen tearing when the camera moves" and "loading times, sometimes even during battles". As far as multi-platform games go, the PS3 has more loading times, choppier graphics, and an unreasonable framerate for the so called powershouse of the systems. Halo 3 was never supposed to be a launch title, I have no idea where you're getting that from. That's like saying the new MGS was supposed to be a launch game. PLUS, they aren't utilizing the entire blu-ray disc and I doubt they will within... probably 3 years. I'm not "bashing sony", I had a PS3 and sold it, I play my 360 a lot and don't see one game STILL that makes me want a PS3. As far as Live goes, it's well worth it. I remember trying to play games online with my PS2 and going through all the different systems that had been set up from game to game and not getting good (or any) matches. I started using Live on the XBox and it was a great experience with quick and easy matches, a "gamertag", I didn't have to set up a new name and password for every game I wanted to play... it was just a better way to do things. I don't think the PS3 will fail but I do see at least a year and a price drop before it becomes a real contender.
Timesplitters 2 on the PS2 was an amazing FPS and probably my favorite "party game" of the last generation. |
If I ruled the world (which of course I don't.......yet) the PS3 would be kicking ass the same way that it's predecessors did. But in reality, I don't think that will happen this time around. I'm a playstation head and I have been since day one, but it's looking likt the 360 is going to rule this generation of consoles.

Most of the games that are being ported are looking it as they are being emulated, not rewritten from scratch. You have to program the PS3 very differently to any console that has been released before. That is why most of the ports are so bad. You look at the games for the PS3 only or being programmed for PS3 first, they look awesome as they are being programmed for the machine and not just being ported over using the same bog standard programming method. The PS3 will shine once people start to realise that the XBox 360 is being pushed to 70%-80% processing power. Motorstorm only used around 16% & Resistance around 20%. We all know that new programming methods are being developed all the time, but there is not alot between them and the PS3 is not even breaking a sweat to do it. If companies keep on sitting on the fence, then that will hurt Sony in the long run. However with Final Fantasy looking like a sure thing on the PS3 (Wii not powerful enough / XBox not selling enough in Japan), Metal Gear Solid creator saying that the storage capacity of disks on the 360 is not enough for the next generation of games and Konami saying that if the PS3 sells enough then they will only develope for Sony. The future is not a forgone conclusion, but Sony needs games. If you look at the E3 list on the IGN Sony is getting almost everything the 360 is getting and Sony are developing a whole lot of new games themselves. |

Ah well, we'll just wait and see while the Wii dominates. |
a really cool website to check out to see how the consoles are selling is www.vgchartz.com.
the wii has almost caught up to the 360. if only the 360 could sell in japan. poor sony. they need to make a price cut. the ps3 is not even selling 20,000 consoles a week. that hurts. |
I support the 360 in this one. Sorry but I hate the WII with a passion and although the PS3 dropped in price it still needs some serious work.
|
I have a wii and it's ok. I really want to get a 360 now! I had one last year, it busted and I traded it for credit towards the wii. Now I wish I had a 360!
