horror featuring Jesus freaks

After recently seeing Die! Die! My Darling for the first time and loving it, I realized that few things are scarier than Jesus freaks. What are some other horror films worth seeing that feature Jesus freaks?

Unaboner3000 03-13-2007 11:55 AM

Frailty immediately comes to mind. Bill Paxton was friggin great in that film.

I can't believe I forgot about Frailty! That was a great one. I still need to buy that one.

Unaboner3000 03-13-2007 12:06 PM

You didn't think anyone knew about that, did you? But God saw you!
[Bill Paxton picks up his axe] ... And you can't escape God's wrath!

LOL!

Another older movie that featured religious nuts was Children of the Corn.

But I can't really think of too many other horror films where religious fanatics played the "bad guys." I think this is a great untapped resource in the horror genre. I mean, nothing scares the shit out of me more than people like Jerry Falwell.

the_real_linda 03-13-2007 12:06 PM

white noise 2 which was pants even tho katee and nate were in in....but that had a scary religious man in it

Despare 03-13-2007 12:12 PM

This really does seem to be an untapped area in horror. Why do you think that is? It seems like such a perfect theme for horror.

mordrid 03-14-2007 06:36 AM

Carrie is one that comes to mind. Her mother was the perfect religious fanatic villian.

How could I forget about Carrie? You are right - that was a classic religious fanatic.

One of the great granddaddies of them all was Robert Mitchum in Night of the Hunter! Totally, absolutely flipped out crazy.

For your real life viewing pleasure on Jesus Freaks:

Here's a documentary entitled "Jesus Camp" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486358/) this just came out recently.

Yeah, I've seen that. While it was terrifying, I'm trying to keep this focused on horror - or at least films intended as horror. But you are right - Jesus Camp was the single scariest film I've ever seen.

I keep seeing this at my local DVD rental store. I haven't seen it yet, but I guess I need to check it out.

Scary because it is real and people just like it features could easily be living next door to you. In fact, I am fairly confident that my neighborhood is filled with them.

I thought that title sounded familiar. I just looked it up and now I remember than I watched that during the last horror challenge. That was a great flick. You are right - he played that role to perfection.

Wouldn't 'Population 436' be sorta like this? They would kill people to make sure that their population remained the same so that God wouldn't be angry...

I suppose so. The difference (at least for me) would be that this wasn't all that prominent in the film. It did provide the background but it wasn't exactly in the viewer's face most of the time. Still, I think you are right.

bloodrayne 03-31-2007 10:03 AM

I think Frailty (already mentioned) really is the best example of this

Kemal 03-31-2007 12:35 PM

It could be worse. As annoying as Jesus freaks are, they're not often found sawing off people's heads on video tape or blowing themselves up in marketplaces.

But anyway this is a good question. You have religious fanatics/killers in shows like Battlestar galactica and 24, why not in horror movies?

No, in real life you have Jesus freaks blowing up abortion clinics and killing mothers who have abortions.

Good point Mordrid, Religion is stupid, pointless and the cause of the war in Iraq. I Especially hate Catholicism, because they try to scare you into believing. What a sham.

Or gay people...or interrace couples...or people who just happen to be going to Planned Parenthood for prenatal care or checkups...

I don't think this is all Christians, however. It's been my privilege to know many faithful Christians that are as shocked and repulsed by the actions of extremists as anyone else is. Unfortunately, the extremists have really gained a foothold and seem to be gaining ground.

Want an example of extremists? Look up anything to do with Fred and Shirley Phelps.

OH! For movies, Servants of Twilight.

I've read about that crazy bastard. He's a fucking quack, and so is his daughter.

AsylumSeeker 03-31-2007 12:58 PM

Yeah, they are pretty active in your area, too Illdojo. They are based in Kansas. Scary bastards! If you ever listen to Adam Carolla and Danny Bonaduce's syndicated radio show, they have her call in and have a field day screwing with her.

Yeah I know, They need to stay the fuck away from The Big O. As far as the Adam & Danny show is it on satellite radio???

AsylumSeeker 03-31-2007 01:11 PM

No, they are on regular, syndicated radio. Funny as hell most days.

They are the ones that picket gay funerals (their claim to fame). They also do a whole lot of other screwed up stuff.

crabapple 03-31-2007 02:15 PM

Goodness gracious, does hatred have no shame?????

Doesn't go into too much, but gives you the general idea.

This is his church's website. Godhatesfags.com....uggh.

Riff 04-01-2007 01:46 AM

They're based out of Topeka, where I used to live. Phelps is a disbarred attorney and a defrocked Baptist minister. These idiots picket somewhere in Topeka every day, and bring their kids out with them. They make me sick.

slayer666 04-01-2007 05:26 AM

Here is some more info on the Phelps clan: http://www.religionnewsblog.com/1786...baptist-church

bloodrayne 04-01-2007 07:58 AM

Could Carrie be considered one of these type movies?...She wouldn't have turned out the way she was if her mother hadn't raised/treated her that way...

*Just watched the Carrie remake with Angela Bettis*

slayer666 04-01-2007 08:32 AM

Yeah, someone already mentioned Carrie. Her mother is a great depiction.
