Murder, Set, Pieces... Review

This movie arrived the other day and I was pretty excited about it. It had alot of things going for it, in my mind, even tho I had yet to see a minute of it,as it fell into alot of categories that some of my favorite movies tend to:
1) It was banned (from every film festival in North America as well as 3 film labs, said to be a first, )
2) It came is a signed edition
3) It had cameos of throwback horror actors (Tony Todd, Gunnar Hansen and Ed Neal)
4) Its exploitation!
5) It had amazing reviews:

"Depraved, disgusting, misogynistic, ugly, and interminable, Murder-Set-Pieces is the lowest form of cinematic life, a movie so utterly degenerate it makes you wish that indie filmmakers had to prove a basic standard of decency in order to buy a camera." by Ben Kenigsberg from Village Voice

So yeah, I was excited and shit.

The premise is quite loose, fans of movies with developed plots should skip this one. Dude is german. Dude has a GF. Dude is a "photographer", in the sense he owns a camera and takes pictures of women. Dude also has an extensive variety of ways to murder people, mostly women in extreme mysogonistic fashion.T here's a heavy german contingent, judging by the credits, as well as the lead actor going off in unsubtitled rants as he goes about is psuchotic business.

I liked this movie, I think. It's one of those movies you're not really supposed to admit to "liking" as you will pretty much come off as a depraved piece of shit, but I don't mind garnering that tag. The movie does have the "snuff film" feel that I had read about, but I think that aspect is more due to the fact that the movie is so disjointed. My GF had nightmares about being a serial killer and trying to murder me the night we watched this, so I guess it is powerful.
I winced a few times, I laughed when i wasn't supposed to, I had a good time.

There were definetly aspects of this movie I didn't enjoy. For one, the soundtrack is fucking awful. Think of german death metal sung by Creed. Yes, it is that bad. The camera work is kinda shoddy at times. The acting by most everyone other than the lead and the cameo guys is subpar, but that doesn't really make a huge difference as they don't take up much screen time.

SPOILER ALERT:

If you don't like RAPE, TORTURE, CHILDREN GETTING MURDERED, GERMANS, TITS AND ASS, and basically that sort of thing , you should steer well clear of this film. However, if you are a fan of indie exploitation this film comes highly recommended. I will try to get the GF to post a THC about this in the next day or two, I have a feeling it will definetly lend some perspective to my post. (SOrry that my review became disjointed but my buddy showed up while I was writing. In all honesty tho, the movie is disjointed so I figure its fitting.)

I'm gonna try and download this over the next couple of weeks (or years with this shitty connection). I wanna order it in from the states but I'm worried customs will confiscate it off me.... it'd probably be OK but I don't wanna risk the $40usd.

Sounds like I'd fucking love it.

The Flayed One 12-11-2006 04:40 AM

I'm really interested to see it because Toe Tag Pictures (creators of August Underground & Redsin Tower) did the FX. Nick Polumbo, on the other hand; I've not heard very many good things about his movies.

HorrorSociety 12-12-2006 01:27 PM

Nick's other movies are not real good, but MSP is (so far) the best of them yet. Yeah, it doesnt have much of a plot, but the gore and torture make up for anything its lacking.

Toe Tag did a good job with the effects and I see from the extras on the dvd it was all done in the basement of ToeTags house. Crazy.

it just got picked up by Lionsgate and they chopped it all to hell....of course. Its due for a release soon too

Never heard of it. Sounds sweet.

Netflix says it comes out January 9th ... but it's at the top of my queue

the january 9th release will have an r-rating as opposed to the directors cut currently availible. they will probably have to cut out a good few minutes to get the r rating me thinks.

The Flayed One 12-13-2006 03:51 AM

Lion's Gate is picking it up? This is wonderful news for Fred Vogel! Good news for Polumbo too! Even if they cut it, that will get their names out there. Then maybe I'll be able to order ToeTag pictures from a site other than their own.

BTW, it's nice to see a little activity in these parts of the forum:)

i 'obtained' this a few days ago - havent watched it yet.
i grabbed it because of the old school horror guys that are credited ... didnt realize it was going to be as nasty as described here..

Yeah UV has been a huge supporter of the extreme horror like this and ToeTag's stuff. MSP got the cover of that one as well. I cant wait to see what Nick has in store for us with Fearmongers.

vanlutz 01-12-2007 10:13 AM

I rented it from Blockbuster, so I got the lame ass R-rated version. The tits and ass were nice, but that's about it.

it's very easy to see how zwoti pan'ed it, but if you dont need alot of substance and can stand some subpar acting (which you obviously can mr plaga) you may want to at least give it a watch. I dunno that i would recommend people buying this, especially with the negative revies it has garnered by the crew here at HDC.

I really want too see this film but Blockbuster only has the R-rated version.
I don't want to pay $40 bucks on Amazon or Ebay either.

jay o2 waster 03-08-2007 01:18 PM

Yea, I hated this movie. Pretty pointless, not all that shocking if you ask me... Good violence though, but there lots of better movies out there with good violence.
